Thank you for this info! The internet is overwhelmed with this idea of needing the two together. I personally think I need both, especially after trying L-tyrosine 1 week into starting 5htp. Your guideline recommendations are spot on. I made the mistake day 1 of trying L-tyrosine with 5htp at night and my sleep was not great, as you mentioned might happen.
@Solami987Ай бұрын
@saidboulila4704 I used to take 5htp in the day, it negatively affected my sleep at night. Tyrosine early day, usually just 500mg once in the morning still, but sometimes a second dose early afternoon, but not too late. If I need a serotonin boost, I opt for less potent things than time release 5htp, but it's still good, I just had to rotate off it a lot. I prefer a very tiny dose of mushroom gummies instead (but that's not accessible for all ....). Usually I don't need the serotonin as much. Ashwagandha may help me in that respect. Either way it's nice being able to take any of these things when you feel a need, instead of being on prescription drugs. Assuming you don't need the stronger pharma stuff, I'm better without it
@TheAngryZebra4 жыл бұрын
I prefer to go one step above and take tryptophan personally. Study symptoms individually and put it in one camp or the other. If you are serotonin deficient, then take either tryptophan or 5-htp. If you are dopamine deficient, take tyrosine. Don't take one JUST because you are taking the other. Treatment must be symptom based. That being said, one will brake and accelerate the other. You are aiming for a balance but you also need to be taking BOTH amino acids in through your diet anyway or in supplement form. You can't put one into the body and starve it of the other one. Keep in mind, tyrosine+iodine+selenium is needed for healthy thyroid function. Dopamine deficiency can make you tired but so can an underactive thyroid due to lack of tyrosine/iodine. If you are switched on enough, you can actually tell what chemical your brain is seeking. Also, beware of sugar foods. These provide a quick hit of brain chemicals so if you are constantly snacking on them. It can be a sign that you are completely amino acid starved. Throw that in with a bad thyroid and it's a recipe for huge weight gain. Don't forget, tyrosine in particular can affect heart health and blood pressure as well. If in doubt, take them individually, the uptake through your body might be so rapid due to being starved of an amino acid for so long you can experience all sorts of symptoms. In cases like these, take 10-20% of the recommended dose. If the effects then work out to be beneficial to you then just take as required. It's like swimming. You'll soon learn how to ride the waves.
@DrJanelleSinclair4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Russell for your input. One should definitely concentrate on improving your diet first before taking supplements

As a dopamine deficient individual i supplement with L tyrosine or L phenylalanine. I only use small amounts of tryptophan from time time when i get sudden and unusual sugar cravings. This is the trigger that my serotonin levels are too low. However if i take 5 htp or tryptophan alone then my depression gets so much worse. It takes a lot of time and experimentation to know what works for you
@tashalodge13402 жыл бұрын
5 htp was awful for me when I took it before. That was without l tyrosine. I've worried a little that I'd deplete my serotonin taking the l tyrosine alone... I guess I can do similar if i start to see symptoms of seratonin deficiency. It's interesting.
@Thomas-pq4ys Жыл бұрын
I just saw a video on being serotonin dominant... and believe I fit the bill. I also suspect, I'm dopamine deficient... I'm ADHD. Adderall was overkill, and quickly became inefficient, destructive to the clarity of thinking. At one time I took an SSRI for depression, and it made everything worse... extremely so... intense adhedonia, no joy, even at things that gave me joy in the past. In my youth, drugs and alcohol did a wonderful thing to lift my mood, increase motivation, and even helping this ADHD guy focus, intensely. I'd rather not get my dopamine from drugs and alcohol.... I need to find a less harmful and healthy way to do so. I will give L-Tyrosine a shot. Thank you.

Thanks for the info. I've been supplementing with both l tyrosine and 5htp for a few months. I must say, it has to be the combo as there is no way one supplement would do this. But it really does make sense. I have learned about catacholamines and l tyrosine will convert to all 3 catacholamines ( dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine) by addd. And 5 htp to l tryptophan or serotonin. I may suggest adding l glutamine to keep glutamate ratios up with the rest of the neurotransmitters and b vitamins which are good for the acetylcholine neurotransmitter. Long story short, stacking these supplements at the right ratio will give ultimate balance
@jbuddyman2 жыл бұрын
Oh and don't forget l theanine for GABA. Taking gaba on it's own is not useful since it can't cross the blood brain barrier. In short 200mg 5 htp ( extended release recommended if you can find it ) 200mg l theanine 1g l tyrosine 1000mg or more of all b vitamins 500mg l glutamine This stack I rely for neurotransmitter balance and I've never had a problem taking this everyday but that's me.

You need to look at the synthesis of these neurotransmitters. I have homozygous variant TPH2 which means my serotonin production is very low, but my TH gene is very fast. Taking 5htp here shouldn't need a boost of dopamine too, however, my DBH gene is also screwed which means my dopa to norep conversion is heavily impaired. I dont think taking more dopa is the answer here, as I also have fast MAOB, but perhaps a dopamine/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor would be better?

@Wilfy Martinez the 10:1 ratio is just a starting guide. If you need more dopamine and feel better on higher levels of tyrosine then the ratio of 675:50 should be fine.

Thanks so much for this video! Question: why does everywhere I look on the internet say to take L-Tyrosine for up to 3 months. Does this have something to do with how long it was studied? Can I take it longer?

I just get that is meant to be cycled to allow the body to readjust it’s chemical flows, like stop 2 3 weeks see how you doing before restarting. I don’t have the exact science for that but the body does better letting it have a rest cycle from the feedback it’s required from taking the supplement

I just found a supplement that has both 200mg of 5-htp and 250mg of L-Tyrosine together. I just ordered it.
@DrJanelleSinclair2 жыл бұрын
That's a lot of 5htp compared to tyrosine. Should normally be approx 1:10. I.e. 25mg 5htp to 250mg tyrosine.

Is it okay to take tryptophan, 5-htp and tyrosine together? how much should I take as a dosage? Thank you.
@alondraacosta-mora65043 жыл бұрын
yes please reply this question
@brucebanner9123 жыл бұрын
@@alondraacosta-mora6504 If you are using 5 htp you have to use tyrosine. Because 5 htp increases the serotonin hormone, which causes the dopamine hormone to fall. To balance, you need to take tyrosine supplements, which increase the dopamine hormone. this should be 1/10. So if you are getting 100 mg of 5 htp, you should take 1 gram of tyrosine. some people says that using 5 htp is not healthy in the long run. Tryptophan also increases serotonin like 5 htp. So it is unnecessary to use tryptophan and 5 htp together. I don't know about tryptophan dosage.

This is an old video. But I have taken these for about 6 months now. Life changing for mood/ anxiety/ concentration. Since taking I have noticed itching in random places in the body. Have no idea what is causing it, not rash etc. I TAKE antihistamines every day because of it. Sometimes doesn’t help. Could it be related to the medication of 5htp/ l tyrosine? It feels neuropathic. Drs not sure what it is

Thank you for this very informative video I have one question You mentioned not to take l-tyrosine if a person is diagnosed with bipolar disorder Can you elaborate on the reasons why not? And what to do in case of a bipolar disorder diagnosis in terms of taking 5htp and l-tyrosine supplements? Thank you
@DrJanelleSinclair5 жыл бұрын
Hi Marny. One of the possible causes of bipolar disorder is high dopamine levels. Tyrosine increases dopamine, so you should not take it if you have bipolar. I would look into zinc deficiency, vitamin d deficiency, progesterone deficiency and mthfr genetic weaknesses. I've got videos on all of those imbalances and you can treat the deficiency and this may help bipolar.

I've come across a few videos in which Doctors claim that it contains growth factors that are not found in humans, thus it causes an immune response and might cause Prostate cancer in worst cases.
