Hi professor, your video has been extremely useful and i can't help thanking you for the clear explanation. I would also be curious to know something more about the relationship between the concept of "strain localization", typical of strain softening responses, and applications of FEM to geotechnical problems. I actually read that softening leads to mesh-dependent results when used with finite element discretization, thus pushing to the usage of "softening regularization" techniques, but i'm not sure to have understood what the latter are and how does this problem affect fem. I would be grateful if you could please help me to dispel my doubts, either with a biref explanation, or by recommending some suitable references about the topic. Thank you in advance.

mesh-dependency means that the failure size (and therefore, response) depends on the mesh size and connectivity, i.e., the larger the element the larger the region that fails and goes into strain-softening. I recommend you read this paper: ascelibrary.org/doi/10.1061/%28ASCE%290733-9399%281987%29113%3A10%281512%29 which serves as an introduction to the theory of "Nonlocal damage" which deals with this problem

hello - your videos are very illustrative and thank you for this! Can you recommend a textbook with similar worked calculation examples? I’d like to verify my calculation results.

The books from Braja Das in geotechnical engineering have some solved cam-clay examples, I don't remember which one because it's in my office and I can't go now! Check also the Abaqus manual, which is an excellent resource abaqus-docs.mit.edu/2017/English/SIMACAETHERefMap/simathe-m-MechanicalConstitutiveTheories-sb.htm

hi thanks for this video, just one question : why the critical state line always crosses the origin in the cam clay model? the cohesion of the soil is not taken into account with this model? thanks

Hi Professor Espinoza, Great explanation. My professor couldn't go over the cam clay modeling because of school closure. This really made things much easier. I have an online final exam coming up for my Advanced soil mechanics class in a week and was wondering I could please get a copy of the assignment and solution* ( 2. cam clay model) discussed in this video, I believe it was a project you handed in class to your student? I would like to train and make sure I understood the concept before my finals. Thank you

sorry, I had not seen this post! The solution is here: github.com/dnicolasespinoza/GeomechanicsJupyter/tree/master/GradHomework/Project7 . It will be unavailable during the Fall semester, hurry up if you still need it. Apologies for the late reply!!
