I had the same exact problem on these guides. They were all off by 1. If I needed an 8 cut. I had to use the 9 guide. Glad I'm not the only one with this issue.

I should revisit this experiment with a set of resin printed guides. Will come out more accurate and see if Jon would adjust his guides according to that.

Not one hundred percent convinced myself, but as a working progress The tool is on the right path. The subtle difference between one depth and the next cut up is Simply good engineering, good demonstration and let's see And enjoy where this tool is going to get too,billbo.

Thanks for watching! The tool is definitely on the right track. Even without a precise printer, you can make precise guides. I could take these ones and file each section down a little, cut the key and then measure the results with calipers...once the guides are tuned, you'd be good to go :) The price can't be beat!

@@LOCKGuru-je4yi yes, if you use a decoder like a Lishi you can then just cut the key to the proper height using a file (or cutting machine). Also, even without a decoder, you can use the impressioning method to file your key ( I do this in my video here kzbin.info/www/bejne/inm7g2x_obuKg80 and here kzbin.info/www/bejne/apzdnIJorLajb9k )

Great review here, thanks for doing and sharing this Michael. With these guides (and the Schlage guides on Red Team Tools), you think “all I need is the clippers, the guides and a blank and I’m good to go!” But you really also should have a fine point sharpie, calipers, a key gauge, and a small hand file. Not the end of the world to need that other stuff but better to know ahead of time 🤣

Seems like a quick fix would be cut your plastic guides down to spec a file then you have a pretty good little cheap key cutter. Take the money you save on "cut by number" cutting system and apply to the Locktech decoder camera.

Super cool to see a test run on the SC1... The v1.1's are out like you mentioned, and I should get them later this week from the printer, I'm fairly sure the problems have been fixed. Basically the key should be able to slide into the jig but the spacing on the bottom is just too tight between the rail and the back edge of the key.... this means the back of the key isn't perfectly aligned to the jig and causing a depth problem on the cut. You could take a razor blade and cut the "rail" off of the bottom of the jig and just hold the key tight to the back of the jig and it should cut perfectly... just means that there is a chance it could wobble in the jig while trying to cut, so you just have to hold it together on that axis as well... Appreciate you doing a video, and of course it's an iterative process and I'm looking forward to continuing to improve them 🙂
@norlin76

I was surprised when the key worked after cutting the 3 cuts one step deeper...it was tight, so some of the other cuts were a bit high, but it worked (could be due to pin wear though, I'd have to try the v1.1 on a lock with fresh pins in it to ensure accuracy)

Awesome little jigs you have come up with and with the various testers you will be able to refine these to a very useful addition to the locksporter who doesn't have a key machine. Are you considering doing ones for the Aussie Lw5 and Lw4 key that would be the C4 profile. Cheers

Where do I print up the specifications guide for the Lishi Cutter? This is such an easier way to cut a key than impressioning.
@norlin76

What do you mean by "specifications guide"? The files for the different specific lock models available are in the video description links, but if you mean key depth guides, that will depend on the lock you're trying to cut a key for.

I was thinking with a set of depth keys there will be no use for the guide.
@norlin76
@norlin76 Жыл бұрын
Not really. Depth keys are great on a key duplicating machine. Perhaps if you had some other sort of jig to keep the depth key aligned with the blank in the key cutter that would work as well, the main part is you need to keep them lined up, which is where these guides come into play, they're a depth key and jig all in one.

I found these quite difficult to use and I could not get them to cut a key that worked. I would suggest making them longer, at least over the bow of the key so you CAN HOLD THEM. Most certainly the KW1 sets were way off and cut way to deep. Some improvements needed here to make them somewhat useful -- nice try, but no Cigar on first go around
@JonLock
@JonLock 2 жыл бұрын
That’s super valuable feedback, Thanks Ken! I’ve had several people give me positive feedback on the KW1 and certified the depth cuts are good - so it’s great to hear a counter example - any details you can share on how they were printed (ie orientation, material, print settings, printer?) I can use all of that info to update the thingiverse listing to help people avoid unsuccessful prints. I also appreciate the idea of making them longer, or somewhat easier to hold. I definitely tried to keep them minimally small for easy/fast printing, but I don’t want to prioritize that over usability, so it gives me a lot to think about!

Great video🤙🏻 do you think a resin printer would’ve worked better for this?
@JonLock
@JonLock 2 жыл бұрын
I’d be thrilled to have someone test this and send feedback - theoretically you’d get a very high resolution print, which can only help with the accuracy of the depth cuts … but the million dollar question is if the resin prints will be strong enough … I mean theoretically there is no force applied to the jig, no sheer pressure or anything, but there are a lot of forces at play on the key and some of that has to transfer to the jig on the cut, so will the resin print be too brittle to handle that? Only testing will tell.
@norlin76
@norlin76 2 жыл бұрын
I can give resin a go, there are many ways to have it print plenty strong (thinking mix of Siraya Tech, 4 parts Fast, and 1 part Tenacious would work excellent). I don't think the additional accuracy is all that important, there is a lot of tolerance in a C keyway given there is 0.015" between cuts.

When the key turned, but was stiff, you should have examined the bitting from above. The pins which are marking will make a dimple in the key at the bottom of the cut. Pins which do not mark do not need deepening. This saved me some copies in the beginning, before I got my key machine adjusted properly. I used an Ilco Mighty-Mite, do not buy these!
