in my italki lessons i always say ie for no. i guess since its like school and im like a student they never tell me to say iya. ive never talked to regular japanese people so maybe ie would sound a bit awkward there.

I would say that iya is definitely more casual and used in Japan, whereas iie sounds very strong. At least in Tokyo, it’s very rarely used and simply avoided most of the time. But, ask your teachers about it and see what they say!
