The original studio version of these songs are the gems you'd want to hear. Live is always an experience and the younger he looks the more mischievous his stage presence becomes. I love everything Tom Waits released in the seventies and a good fat half of the eighties. At some point after his theatrical deep dive, I topped out and left. But mad respects for this unique artist.

Tom Waits went from a songwriting troubadour to a jazz poet to an avant-garde eccentric. All while still being able writing a sincere tearjerker on piano.

Guitar player is Marc Ribot; came out off the NY no-wave movement in the 80s. He’s playing very conservatively here for him. He is one of the most adventurous avant- guitarists out there. He’s done albums ranging from free-jazz to punk rock to Cuban to full bore experimental noise.

Some of his songs have been covered by other artists, some highly unlikely you have to say, Crystal Gayle anyone? Just two I'll mention, Rod Stewart "Tom Traubert's Blues", (still my favourite Waits song of all time), and Bruce Springsteen "Jersey Girl". Give them a listen, (the Waits versions obviously), you won't be disappointed.

Swordfish Trombone album (1983) was a transitional album where he invented a genre of mad scientist pipe clanging music. He pivoted from jazz crooning beatnik singing about 1970's LA noir night life.

so just a tiny point of order its 16 shells from a .30-06 not 30.6 its a caliber of bullet .30 caliber... adopted in 1906 it was the standard caliber bullet for all the rifles and machine guns the US used in WW1 and WW2 and Korea and is still a popular hunting cartridge.. thanks for coming to my TEDtalk

Somewhere along the way, the title got written down incorrectly at Amazon and (almost certainly) at Spotify. It's not "30.6" at all - it's "thirty-ought-six" ("ought" is an old-timey word for zero) and if it were written numerically, it would be ".30-06" which is referencing the .30-06 Springfield cartridge.

Just found your channel; if you’re interested (and don’t already know), a guitarist named John Hammond released an album of Tom Waits covers some years ago. The name of the album is Wicked Grin and it’s on KZbin. Offered as an FYI if a different take on some of the tracks you’ve already heard is something which appeals. FWIW I’m not generally one who enjoys covers, but I dug his versions. Cheers.

Swordfishtrombones is one of the greatest albums of the 80s -- really one of the greatest ever. He was unique as the one artist from the 70s who got better in the 80s with a wacked out hobo cabaret style. "Shore Leave" is a masterpiece but really the whole album is. Closer to Christmas time react to his live version of "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis".

May suggest a funny interview Tom did with Flo and Eddie in 1978? It was done at the Tropicana Motel in Hollywood, where he lived. He gives a performance on piano in his small room that will give you goose bumps. I sent a link but it got removed by YT. The vid is 15 minutes long (not the shortened 7 min version also on YT). So who knows if it will work?

In March of 1974 I saw Tom Waits opening for Frank Zappa in Portland Oregon at the Paramount Theater. Unfortunately for Tom the crowd wasn't in the mood and kept chanting for Frank. He finally left the stage to very loud booing. On that tour, it was just Tom and his acoustic guitar. I kinda felt bad for him at the time.
