Ok, you HAVE to listen to the live Soldier Field from Chicago 2017 version (it's 7:28 minutes) The Little Things That Give You Away. It's Bono singing to himself (real Bono vs "show" Bono) and it's so raw and vulnerable that it's relatable. Absolutely gorgeous. The end is amazing, as he sings about waking up in fear, you see edge start walking towards Bono, and Bono walks to the rest of the band. Because he knows they understand and accept him. It's so relatable to the rest of us. Just gorgeous, raw, and the way the band rallies juat shows why they're still together.

Thanks for the video, I always enjoy getting a musician's take on bands that I enjoy. You really can't go wrong with the Sydney gig; it captures the band at a fascinating point in their careers. They bet big on themselves and won. You sort of had to be there; ZOOTV was so fresh, so unusual and and against the grain in terms of what else was out there at that time and in retrospect; it really heralded the impending arrival of the Age of Information. Achtung Baby! came out in late '91 and they took it on the road into 93 - when you think of the music that was out at that time, it's pretty incredible. Guns n roses had their Use your Illusions double album tour, Metallica released their Black album, REM had Automatic for the People, and out of nowhere, "Grunge" hit like a thunderbolt with the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. I mean, our cups ran over with incredible music! In U2's case, they pushed the concert going experience into the future with this tour. Mick Jagger loved the show but was faux annoyed with the band because in order to keep up, everyone was going to have to spend more than the GDP of a small country on their own shows, lest they seem outdated and stale by comparison. Edge of course is just so clean and delivers flawlessly on whatever best serves the song. I noted your comments on their photos - I'm glad you did because the band worked with a Dutch photographer and director names Anton Corbign for decades. Anton took many of the bands most iconic photos over the years (i.e.: the desert cover of the Joshua Tree ) to the photos here and beyond. He just has a knack for capturing 4 rough and tumble Irish guys and making them look both arty and cool; I love his work and I'm pleased that you appreciated that. All the best to you, cheers !

I understand if you want to keep going through this show, but some LEGENDARY performances outside of ZooTV: All I Want is You into Where the Streets Have No Name from Slane Castle, With or Without You into The Fly in Boston 2001 (I know you’ve watched The Fly from this show, but this version is mind-blowing.. best version ever), Ultraviolet and Moment of Surrender from the 360 Tour and Bullet the Blue Sky from Paris in 2015. The Paris show took place 2 weeks after the horrific terrorist attacks across the city. The attacks happened on a Friday night and U2 were supposed to play Saturday night. They lobbied local officials to come back ASAP and were the first public event allowed after the attacks. Also, if you remember, the largest loss of life that night was at a concert, where terrorists walked in and opened fire on the crowd. The band that was playing was The Eagles of Death Metal. The band was flown out of Paris that night on U2’s private jet. Bono was calling the lead singer every day to offer help and encourage the band not to let that horrible experience stop them. Needless to say, the emotion in the arena that night was intense. U2’s message was to choose love over fear. They played an incredible show (Sunday Bloody Sunday that night was 😢😢😢) and at the end, Bono said they wanted to invite some friends onstage. “They had their stage taken from them two weeks ago, so we’d like to offer them ours.” With that, The Eagles of Death Metal joined them… they played a song together and then U2 left and let them finish the show. It was magnificent. As for Bullet that night, Bono completely redid the speaking part in the second half of the song to be confrontation between he and his younger self, accusing him of “selling out.” Really powerful and self-aware.

@@L33Reacts My wife has a thing… I don’t share it but I completely understand it. She HATES watching concerts on TV/KZbin, etc as it loses the energy of being in the room actually hearing it live. I get it, but as a former lead singer in bands, I love watching live performances. Anyway, the concert in Paris was an HBO special. I went to the basement to watch it and she actually joined me. The woman who hates concerts on video cried at least 5 times and made two FB posts about how amazing it was. I’m sure everyone in that arena, all people who had lived through that night just two weeks earlier felt what she did x50.

The beautiful original video for New Year's Day was shot near Sälen (the name of the little town/winter sport resort means The Seal, referring to the sea animal) in the south of the mountain range that runs along the border regions of Sweden and Norway. The band look great in the clear white snow, and the footage of knights riding on horseback intercut with historic footage from the struggle between Germany and the USSR, the eastern front, during WW2 conveys a really good feeling of war then and now (the album was called "War" too, of course). The idea had been that it was to be the band riding on the horses, but their hands had become too frozen after the filming session in the deep snow, so they hired a few local girls to do the riding instead, dressed in hooded coats and filmed in a way that makes sure you never really see their faces .- they appear like visions in a dream. Superb song and video! kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJa8dKx5lrCSa80

Well it doesn't mean "the seal", as in the aquatic mammal, being inland and up in the mountains and all. It's a modern spelling of an old word "sel/selen", another word for it is "fäbod"... ok this is going to be a short crash course in Swedish I'm afraid. Swedish like German and some other languages can build words by combining other words. The word fäbod is made up of two words "fä" meaning "cattle", and "bod" which roughly translates into "shed". The correct translation in its definite form (fäboden/selen) would be The Cattle Shed. Nothing to do with U2 really, but great songs!

The WHO inspired them.

If you want your mind blown - you should check out Mofo and Discotheque from the Live in Mexico City DVD. Another completely different U2.

Two of my favorite bands from the 80"s. The Police and U2 were huge and both had a completely original guitar sound. One realized they'd done just about all they could with that sound and moved on to something else. The other didn't and became an irritating parody of themselves. I guess it's the old "Better to burn out than fade away" dilemma.

I think that when it comes to U2, their live versions of pretty much everything are better. They are so dynamic in person.

@@lauraallen55 he has a good voice. He makes me cringe, though. There doesn't appear (to me) to be anything natural about him. I didn't always feel like that. At the beginning they were all just talented Irish lads. Bono changed and started to believe his own hype.
@lauraallen554 ай бұрын
@@Moz1011 You know, I've read his book, and a lot about him over the years, and there is more to him than meets the eye for the casual observer. Just for one thing alone, he's done a helluva lot for humanity in general, as have the others, but mostly him. Check out what he did for the band in Paris at the time of the bombing there, sometime, and you'll see a side of him a lot of people don't see. Many others besides you think he is very full of himself, and a bit shallow, but I can assure you that is very far from the truth. He, like many rock stars start to believe their own hype, but few of them realize they'e taken themselves too seriously, and sit back and take a good look at themselves for it. Bono did. He's been married to his childhood sweetheart since they were not much more than kids, and has done amazing things for the world with their charities, as have the others. I'm not trying to convince you of anything, but that old adage that 'you can't always tell a book by it's cover' is very true in some instances. ;)

@@Moz1011 He had a credible threat on his life when they were scheduled to perform in AZ during the time when AZ was going to make MLK, Jr. day a holiday. The 3-letter agencies involved in such things strongly recommended they not go on as scheduled. He wanted to not disappoint their fans (one of many occasions where he was sick or otherwise could have easily been excused for cancelling), so insisted they go on. The specific threat was if he sang Pride. They didn't change their set, and Bono said when the song started and it was time to start singing, he just did it and closed his eyes. When he opened them, their bass player was standing and playing right in front of him. He can't be too big of an arrogant ass if his bandmate was willing to literally take a bullet for him. At least that's my take on it. Like I mentioned, there is a lot more to Bono, as well as to the rest of them than meets the eye. For their residency at the Sphere, they spent a lot of time considering whether to still fulfill the obligation because Larry couldn't perform with them due to surgeries. In nearly 50 years of performing together with not one of them ever missing one performance (save for one time when Adam missed due to being hungover, and which made him quit abusing alcohol) it was a very big decision. Larry encouraged them to go ahead.

Voted the most overrated group ever poor poor musicians
@lauraallen554 ай бұрын
Voted that by whom? lol! I've seen people make up their own lists of 'overrated' bands, and have the Beatles on there, along with all kinds of other bands. As for being poor musicians, that's just laughable.

@lauraallen55 Agreed. H8ters gonna h8te, as the saying goes. Some people don’t like the social commentary in many U2 songs (and don’t want to admit it so they slam the band instead) or they resent that U2 has been so popular for so long, and take swipes at the band for it. U2 are targets more than other acts b/c they unapologetically put themselves “out there” in different ways era after era. Band members have said the “risk” of it is important to U2’s creative process. Music taste is subjective, so if U2 isn’t someone’s cup of tea-no problem. But claiming they are poor, untalented musicians sounds desperate at this point in U2’s widely successful 40+ year career.

@@KoYou9NWTM Nicely said! Yes, there's no way they would be selling out crowds from the time they're teens through the time they're in their 60s if they didn't have the goods. And, yes, it is also amazing to me how people can put performers down for their social commentary, particularly a band like U2 whose members put their money where their mouths are, and not only contribute to, but create charitable causes that help humanity as a whole. Terrible people, right? lol!
