It has everything they do: bombast, mystery, big, small, loud, soft, and unfathomable skill. It's Yes's entire career in 10 minutes. If there's anything in it that she doesn't like, then she won't like Yes."

Yes is a band that had a profound affect on me as a teenager and musician in the 1970's. Close to the Edge at the age of 15 changed my life but I still made mistakes abusing drugs and alcohol, thrill seeking, taking risks. I co-founded a Progrock band. Two years in I quit everything cold turkey with out relapse never looked back. That was 40 years ago. Yes music is more relevant to me now more than ever. Once you've been able to process the past you can look back at the good times and the good lessons you learned and move forward bit by bit into a future worth living without beating yourself up over it. Be calm, be Strong, just Be and Carry On.🎶 🕊,.....🇨🇦

Your closing remarks were great man. I'm 21 and I've been going through my own issues right now and it can definitely be a lot. I got into Yes a few years ago and my love for them only got stronger. Especially hearing their longer pieces. But you spoke to me at the end bc its the same way i feel about them. Nobody else sounds like them, and they're music has been a comforting friend to me at a time where i dont feel like i have many. I listen to them everyday and it never gets old. Outstanding Young Man! Keep the faith, and yes, Tales from Topographic Oceans is right up there with Close to the Edge and Relayer! I think so anyway, I think Wakeman had a hard time with this album, composition wise! Think I remember hearing something to that effect over the years. But anyway ✌️

@@L33Reacts I absolutely agree. Music is a powerful thing when you allow it to be. Especially when you find music that touches and feeds your soul. I'm very centered around 60s-90s. I'll always wish I were old enough to get to see Yes 20+ years ago or especially the late 70s. Of course man.

@@josephnaja 100%! Tales is a great album and from what I've seen it aged like wine. You're right about Wakeman I actually had a meet and greet with him earlier this year and he thought it had more potential but a lot of filler to get the lengths to where they needed to be. But that in his older years he appreciates the album more for what it is. His first solo album also came out around the time they recorded Tales so his energy wasn't with it.

The fiercest rhythm section ever, Bruford’s precision, approach and technique was critical to the music they delivered on their first five albums. It was a huge part of what makes their sound so different. Bruford remains my favorite drummer since Yes’ early days; listen to ‘Everdays’, ‘I See You’, ‘Then’ or any number of songs. Their ability to dive into those adventurous arrangements depended on having a drummer who could shine as effectively as any lead guitarist. Check out the entire ‘One of a Kind’ album by Bruford. The length of recovery isn’t as important as adding one more day to it; you’re good.

What made Fragile a big step forward for Yes wasn't just that Rick brought the different keyboard sounds that Tony Kaye didn't want to explore, but because he brought classically-trained arrangement skills to the band, and they all started to plan out the songs a whole lot more, letting themes and motifs return and change and modify. In HOTS I'm pretty sure that a lot of what you hear arrangement-wise are Rick's ideas: eg the chord sequence of the verse (in Bflat minor) sits behind the long bass solo as well as the machine-gun guitar-bass riff from the opening, but in G sharp minor. Listen too to how the arpeggiated bass figure in the verse is echoed by or harmonised on the synthesiser in various bits. This (slightly intellectual) discipline is what makes Close To The Edge such a great album, and one reason I think Tales FT Oceans doesn't quite work so well - because Rick couldn't be bothered to invest the time to _make_ it work.

Sure, the studio version has the best sound (Eddie Offord!), but live versions such as this one from 1978 are in some ways more powerful...kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaHaoaCdf8aMi9E Bruford: "I’ve had many years to think about this - the band hit its real template, really, with “Heart of the Sunrise,” which came up on Fragile. And that seemed to have it all; that was a shorter version of what was to become “Close to the Edge” and some of the longer-form things that we did. It probably only ran eight minutes or something, but we thought of it as a long song. It had all the bits and pieces in place ... ‘Heart of the Sunrise’ remains a very strong piece of music for me personally and emotionally."

The live version is good as well. It's just more brash and noisy than the studio version. And on Yessongs it's Alan and not Bill drumming, so it's more just straight rock drumming and less jazzy. But it's definitely not lounge music! 😁 Jon has talked about how this was inspired by early mornings in the cities they'd be travelling through while touring, when the sun would come up as they were making their way from the city to the country. But musically the main thing to takeaway from this song is DYNAMICS. Soft-hard, loud-quiet, fast-slow -- HotS is a masterclass in how to bring all of that together in one track. Btw, that main riff was inspired "21st Century Schizoid Man." That closing bit was a reprise of "We Have Heaven", which was Jon's feature on the album (they all have one.)

The song is about feeling lost being in the city, and only really comfortable in the country. I've always taken the crazy heavy parts like the intro and all of the odd, short, quirky bits to represent being in the city, and the more calm, melodic parts represent the being in the country.

This Is the Great Bill Bruford on drums! ...joinin' King Crimson the following year! For me, the greatest prog rock drumer (but he also manage greatly jazz)

Bill Bruford :) The only reason Fragile isn't Yes' greatest album is because "Close to the Edge" exists

Congratulations on 3 years. Thanks for sharing. I found YES when I was 16 years old (1975). I had a lot of shit going on then... and, have had a lot of shit happen throughout my 65 years here on earth. YES has truly influenced my perspective on life. Their music is so positive, uplifting, spiritual, majestic, introspective...I often still tear-up, 49 years later, listening to some of their epic masterpieces. I hope that you can react to some of those 18-to-22 minute masterpieces...I think you'll tear-up too. Till your next YES reaction! Keep-up the good work!

Thank you. I truly appreciate it. I don't bring it up much but I'm not hiding it either. I'm not ashamed of my past. I'm an open book. yes is just like a cup of hot chocolate ona winter day :)

In the instrumental refrain at the beginning and throughout the piece, Bill Bruford is mixing single and double strokes between his snare drum and his hi hat and ride cymbals. Amazing that he even thought to do that. Part of the reason the live version isn't as good is that on most versions, Alan White (RIP) is the drummer. White was a completely different drummer than Bruford, and he does some stuff that I really like, but I never liked the way he played this one (Bruford does play HOTS on the Union tour from 1991, and that live version IS very good). The end part is actually a reprise of an earlier piece on the record called We Have Heaven.

The live version of this song performed by Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe is up to snuff and is on KZbin. Bruford is frankly astonishing throughout.

The rudiment that Dr. Bruford uses in the intro is the paradiddle diddle

Other great rhythm sections include Squire and Bruford on Squire's solo album Fish Out of Water. Also Bruford and Wetton on several King Crimson albums as well as the 1st UK album. Squire and White (replaced Bruford in Yes) were also great - saw them 3 times.

That's just the thing, man, we don't listen to Yes, we experience Yes. They were so good that one might have suspected them of having come to us from the land of Faerie.
