Yes, really good picks for sure! The guys in the band were only twenty years old when they cut the Trespass album, and they had rarely been playing much live beyond the small clubs and college ballroom circuit, but it feels remarkably confident and with an unmistakable voice of their own. Great songwriting and Peter Gabriel's authority as a singer is very striking, even at this early stage; he completely carries the lyrics all through the album and make them glow with meaning and mystery.

@@lotusblossom7411 I have nothing against ANY song on the album. I just decided to pick 2 songs, and anytime Genesis was mentioned, I would annoy Lee with those songs. I was going to do different songs every time, but decided to just stick with 2. but the force is strong in Lee and he's ignored it constantly! *LOL*. I do occasionally push for "calling all stations"

"Can -Utility" refers to King Canute (or Cnut) 11th Century King of England! He thought he was so powerful that he could hold back the waves on command.

You said it before me. He was a Viking king, IIRC?

@@mattleppard1970 Yes, I believe so.

Another version of the story is that he did not believe he could turn back the tide, but felt his courtiers believed he could do anything, even turn back the tide. He went to the sea to command the tide to turn back. When it did not, he proved to them that the king was not all powerful. Gee, it's only been 1500 years. You'd think we could get the story straight. 😁

@SophiaPangloss8 күн бұрын
Not exactly. Canute was actually demonstrating that even a king doesn't have the power to stop the tides, he fully expected to feel the waves around his feet. Or so the part of the story I read said, because it's mostly story after all these centuries. He was a Danish king, but he was also king of England for a while, when England was controlled by the Danes.

The scattered pages of a book by the sea Held by the sand, washed by the waves A shadow forms cast by a cloud Skimming by as eyes of the past But the rising tide absorbs them Effortlessly claiming They told of one who tired of all Singing, "Praise him, praise him." "We heed not flatterers," he cried "By our command waters retreat Show my power, halt at my feet." But the cause was lost, now cold winds blow Far from the north, overcast ranks advance Fear of the storm accusing with rage and scorn The waves surround the sinking throne Singing, "Crown him, crown him." "Those who love our majesty show themselves!" All bent their knee Aah, na-na-na-na-na-na But he forced a smile even though his hopes Lay dashed where offerings fell Where they fell "Nothing can My peace destroy as long as none smile." More opened ears and opened eyes And soon they dared to laugh See a little man with his face turning red Though his story's often told, you can tell he's dead

Happy. Yes. Two excellent selections Beth. Trespass is an under-valued album and this tune is so very Genesis. Mayhew does a nice Phil Collins imitation. And Peter sounds like Peter! 'Can-Utility' is one of my favorites. I had to look up King Knute and love the historical accuracy. More excellent prog transitions, plus wonderful melodies. Great review as usual. (another weird title.....Can-Utility = King Knute; The Coastliners = Vikings. He was the last Viking King of England....hence, his throne sinking into the sea. I love Genesis)

Trespass was the first Genesis album I ever purchased (back in 1980). The LP was from the used bin - but it was on the OG USDM ABC/Dunhill label and was pressed on Thiccc vinyl, the way God intended it. Great album, top to bottom, even without young Phil Collins behind the kit.
