It is a great song. I always imagine Jim as an ancient greek actor. He was a well-read guy I think he got some of his ideas from that knowledge of philosophy and fiction. Anyway there will never be another like him.

@L33Reacts it’s crazy because Jim is in the “27 Club”. If you haven’t heard of that term, I would def look into it. It’s wild. Jim was always walking that fine line between brilliance & madness. I HIGHLY recommend checking out The Doors movie made in the 90s. Val Kilmer & Meg Ryan absolutely killed it recreating the life of Jim & his wife, Pam. The Doors sound is exclusively psychedelic experimental & Jim’s soul is quite literally made of pure poetic gusto. Cryptic was the name of his game, for sure! When he wasn’t drinking whiskey, dropping acid & engaging in s€xual exploration, he was writing & creating & howling at the moon ❤

Decades ago because I am old, my buddy and I in a 10 year period would meet up at two older downtown bars about three times per month. In Warren’s Inn, the Compact Disc, “Strange Days” was on the jukebox. I would try to time the song, “When The Music Is Over” for the last song of night at “Drink Up”, 2:15 am. Often I would nail it.

Lol I had to laugh at your comment about a part of your brain being unlocked. Imagine hearing this as a 12-13 year old as I did when it was released. There were other innovative bands coming out in 1967 but NOBODY went as far as the Doors! I was hooked immediately and remain so almost 60 years later. There is a reason you don't hear any other artists over the years doing Doors covers. It's because they CAN'T live up to the original. This was 4 guys all on the same wavelength, many times just recording stream of consciousness rambling by Jim Morrison with the other 3 jamming and feeling the breaks and swells. Sure they had radio hits, but they were all over the map with their music and NEVER lacked creative inspiration. A truly unique group of artists thinking as one!

It's not unusual to go on a mental journey during an extended Doors song. Perhaps unearthing early memories of a church bathroom. Jim Morrison once explored his earliest memorys in song, (seeing a roadside accident). Jim read a lot about human psychology and philosophy, and fearlessly explored the use of psychedelic drugs, meditation, ritual, emotional manipulation. His goal was to create music that transformed himself, and his audience. Jim liked "The Motivation of Crowds", taking audiences on strange musical trips.

one thing I dont think the doors get enough credit for is just how powerfully original and dangerous they were when this song first starting hitting the scene. this is actually not a '67 song. it was already in the full form you are hearing now by '66!... the doors performed this live at the whisky in LA and the influential club in nyc, odines in yes, 1966.... sure dylan had broken thru the lyrics barrier esp by '65. & yes rubber soul and psychedlia sounds were already out... but no one in '66, incl the velvet undergrd or early floyd, was combining powerful lyrics, heavy psychedlic sound w/ improv jazz (densmores drums in this is top shelf) delivered with dramatic stage techniques of tension, danger & pause. along w/ the mood & cinematic broad scape. music as carthasis & experience, to take you on a passage way.... from '66-'68, the doors had a major impact in pushing the ledger of what rock could do. very unique unit, to never be repeated. ground breaking to later genres such as dark metal, sound scape electronic, punk & college radio.

JJ Cale, the hero’s of Eric Clapton and mine too. Cale wrote more then 200 songs, you can choose Artificial Paradise, Sensitive Kind, Deep Dark Dungeon. The second Artist Shawn Phillips, and with him, check his album Second Contribution. I was fortunate to see the Doors perform this live at the Cheetah in Santa Monica, April 1967. I still remember standing in that ballroom being mesmerized by the band. I grew up in LA, and once we found the Doors, we were hooked and saw them at every venue we could. I think they were at their best in '66 and '67.

Robbie Kreiger is most underrated. They were my first concert, in 1970 at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago. I was 15 and found I loved live rock concerts. Awesome song & reaction. And you are getting programed, but by Me. Mojo Risin, & the boys, not the CIA.✌️❤️🎶

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how at 3:59, the song could have just ended there and been a standard radio-play song. But no! That's where it really gets interesting. For those who may not know, the band laid down their tracks in a single day. Morrison was off doing something else. He came in the next day and put down the vocals in one single take over the band. Two days! For a song this long and complicated. That blows my mind. John Densmore is a very, very underrated drummer in my opinion. He served this song absolutely perfectly in all ways.

This is one of my favorite Doors song. Record companies in that era were scoundrels, but if your band was able to sell records they would turn you loose in the studio and let you create at will. This song is an example of that. These guys had the chutzpah to go in and experiment and the talent to come up with something special.

After you've heard The End there is a much shorter, weirder Doors song - Horse Latitudes. It refers to the northern and southern latitudes where there are often no winds and sailing ships would become becalmed. Allegedly, Spanish ships would throw their horses overboard when they were in danger of running out of water. Now imagine The Doors making a soundtrack for that. Yes, it is indeed creepy!

The only song in rock and roll history where you get to hear a butterfly scream. I don’t think it packs quite as much punch as “The End,” but that may have less to do with its own merits than it not (as of yet) having been incorporated into a cinematic masterpiece. It’s still plenty epic, not to mention sweeter and more hopeful, and that’s more than good enough for me.

Jim was a poet, John Densmore was jazz Drummer, Robby was just learning the guitar, and Ray on the keyboards was classical trained...the music this band put out in the brief, and hectic times of that decade..finishing with LA Woman Album, Is pure Art. The girl in the window won’t drop. That image was brought in by Jim relating to the first time he saw his girlfriend, Pam Courson. She was sitting in a tree outside his window while he was tripping his balls off. Or so the story goes. It was a scene in the movie with Val Kilmer. I once did some of the last that you could get acid in the early 70s, and could of sworn I heard the scream of a butterfly 😳

Go to 7:21, then wait 3-4 seconds. Densmore hits the hi-hat and sustains it open and ringing for long than usual before closing. It's a longer sustained open hi-hat than you normally hear. And I swear, I wait in great anticipation the entire 7 minutes 21 seconds just to have the experience of that one hi-hat part.
