@Telrathian7 ай бұрын
So, on the topic of ice cubes. It is all about thermal mass. Assuming a finite time, the greater the beverage (warm) to ice (cold) ratio, the faster the ice will melt and the more watery your drink will be. So, if you put a lot more ice than soda (or other beverage) in your glass, the ice will chill the drink quickly and melt slower. If you use less ice the ice will melt more quickly and water down your drink faster. So, fill up the class to the top with ice, pour in your beverage of choice, and refill as necessary!

I think the additional context here is that portion sizes outside of America can be much smaller, therefore not necessarily designed to be taken home. If your food is half the portion of an American restaurant plate and you don’t eat it all, it may be more “rude,” like you didn’t enjoy the food if that makes sense. It kinda connects to the coffee as well; American culture is a lot more about convenience and being “on the go” whereas other Western European cultures in particular value the experience of going to a place and sitting there with the ambience, food etc.

I don't think any place we ate at could fill my glass with a quarter of ice. Back at the hotel, I always had my glass 100% full of ice and just enough Coke or Pepsi to fill it.

Because fountain drinks are cold anyway, I ask for them without ice. When I've forgotten to ask, they take the drink with the ice and bring me a drink without. You can also ask for a glass of ice and a glass of pop so that you can control the ice the way you want. No charge, no side eye. Dip your fries in a mix of ketchup & ranch dressing. YUM! We do add lots of ice and it's usually crushed not cubed depending on where you are. It makes it very cold and if you live in a hot climate it's usually appreciated. You usually drink it before it gets too watered down and you can have as many as you like so I guess we just think why not. At home I used crushed ice from the fridge door much more often then cubed.

As you were talking about the ice cubes in the drinks, it kind of dawned on me .... maybe that glass nearly full of ice cubes (which I'm used to and don't mind) is how they make the "free refills" possible or more affordable for the restaurant -- with that much ice it would take three free refills to make the equivalent of one actual drink. And I don't mind the "watered down" drinks, either. Odd. Never considered that before.

Generally, most of the US doesn't have time for "Big Breakfasts". Weekends for sure. Big Sunday breakfast is a tradition in my house. Otherwise anything from cereal to muffins to something easy and quick. The 'gap' isn't a thing. You can't actually see anything unless you get right up to the door and peek thru'...which would be weird. You can tell someone's in the stall but you can't see anything. It's actually easier to see out than in. Bacon is da' bomb! and I even spice and sweeten it up by sprinkling paprika and chili pepper and honey or sugar and then bake it on a rack in the oven. PB&J is a tradition. Salty/sweet and savory is a real thing. Dip your fries! Doggy/clam shell leftovers is great. Eat it again later or on the morrow for lunch at work. Refills and ice Who0p! Some places charge for a refill...most don't. The cups are larger in the US to accommodate for the ice and you can ask for light or no ice and still get your cup filled for the same price. I always ask for light ice.
@misslora38967 ай бұрын
1: They do automatically fill the cup with ice if you don't request an amount. I personally don't like that much so, I simply request "EZ ice or light ice please", when ordering my drinks. It's a very common thing to do. 2: I can't even imagine feeling weird about asking for a to go box/doggie bag for my leftovers... 1: I paid for it damn it. & 2: It's bad to waste food. At least that's what most of us Americans grew up being taught. 3: I think it's weird not to eat savory and sweet foods @ the same time. One usually makes you want the other. They balance each other.

13:35 there are multiple reasons for so much ice. A. lots of ice in a cup means that less drink will be needed to 'fill' it. thus restaurants spend less on drinks as ice is very cheap. B. sodas use carbon dioxide and it diffused into the soda best at 43*F. so chilling the soda helps the taste. C. cold water actually tastes better than warm (room temp) water.
@petepal557 ай бұрын
I'm a Yank and I love escargot with butter and garlic. It's the butter and garlic that makes it, you can use that combo on almost anything and it will be good. It all depends on what temperature the drink you're pouring is. If it's already cold I want less ice because it leaves more room for the drink. But as I became older I started preferring room-temperature water. You can drink half a liter of water right down when it isn't cold because it doesn't chill your mouth and throat so badly you have to stop. The only time maple syrup touches my bacon is when it overflows the pancakes too much, lol. But I only use real maple surple so I don't use too much, it's too expensive.

4:58 I've posted on one of your videos before about the bathroom stall issue. it is the result of a legal matter that stemmed from a lady that passed out in a stall (back when the stalls went down to the floor and didn't have 'cracks'). no body could get to her because of the old design of the stalls and she ended up having a medical issue. she ended up suing the business then the stall maker over the issue. so now they make it so that someone can get to you if you are unresponsive when it looks like you might be having a medical issue. as as long as someone isn't just standing there staring at you through the crack, then we just ignore it.

2:58 what most people don't understand about breakfast is this: 1. it's exactly what it's name implies. you're breaking your fast that was happening while you were asleep. so you'll need some food to get you going. this usually involves carbs to give you 'sugars' to power your muscles and brain. BUT 2. you're also building a store of energy for long term use throughout the day. THUS, you need foods like complex carbs AND proteins which can be broken down slowly into amino acids that act like carbs as well. this gives you a long term, slowly developing energy reserve that you'll use throughout the day. it's slowly developing because meats take longer to digest than carb foods (which are broken down quickly), thus it acts like a slow release medicine type thing. that way you're not snacking before lunch, stacking carbs that you don't need, just because you're hungry again. 3. you need a LARGE mean for breakfast to last you and to give you a large energy store to get you going and keep you going throughout the day. if you have a BIG breakfast, then you can have smaller lunches and dinners, keeping those meals portions sizes smaller. Thus, having just 'sweet' foods for breakfast isn't good for you as you'll A. flood your body with just sugars, and B. you'll quickly run out of fuel before the next meal and end up snacking. So, some kind of meats or dairy with complex carbs (fruit for example) and a small amount of simple carbs is best for breakfast.

So being that there isn't much coke in the glass and I get free refills, I drink it fast. Then, each time they refill it, the ice gets less, and the coke gets more. So I get drink the upcoming refils slower and slower as the ice gets less, and my coke is still nice and cold. I just made myself thirsty! 🤤

I looked up some answers for the gaps in US bathroom stalls. First, they allow more air circulation which…well, helps dissipate odors. Second, the larger gap at the bottom will allow emergency responders to get in and help someone in distress in a bathroom stall without breaking the door down, which could hurt the occupant. And third, the larger gap at the bottom also gives “toe space” for people in wheelchairs so they can get a bit closer and reach the latch on the door to get out.
@tonyfix87397 ай бұрын
Lew(?), I have an experiment for you. Take two glasses, some ice, and some room temperature coke. Fill one glass to the top with ice. Fill the other glass barely 1/4 filled with ice. Fill both glasses with Coke. The liquid is much warmer than the ice. In the glass with mostly room-temp coke, the ice will melt quickly. In the glass filled with ice, the coke will be quickly chilled to be a similar temp as the ice, so the ice stays ice, until the room temperature melts it after a longer period of time. You get less coke in the glass, but with free refills we get, who cares? You get to drink all the ice-cold non-watered-down coke you want. Big brain!

Cover & let cook a bit before flipping. You will want to make these in pairs. While those are cooking, start frying eggs, 1 for each pair of pancakes. When you flip your eggs, layer on some previously cooked bacon & cover with cheese. Once all ingredients are cooked it's time to build your ultimate breakfast sandwich. Sausage pancake, add maple syrup, then the bacon cheesy egg, butter the second sausage pancake & top the sandwich off. Pairs nicely with a sweet and tangy orange juice.
