Yah, I catch myself doing the "yup" or "mm hmm" instead of saying "you're welcome". It's not that I'm not feelin' the "you're welcome" spirit, it's just that in the US you probably hear thank you about 50-100 times a day...which is good. So the response gets truncated. I work with people in Australia and have also picked up the "no worries" response, which somehow seems to be more fun.

Something I've noticed when I visit the UK, mostly in Scotland, is that the people were not raised to be confident about themselves, their family, their abilities, or even how to present themselves in interviews or public settings. I'm amazed at how often the say to me "You're so confident" because see myself as being normal and even hesitant at times. Most people I run into in the UK have not set their goals high enough. They set lower goals so they can attain them; then others come along and step over them to become something or obtain something. People are always cutting themselves and others down, and it's no wonder why depression and anxiety levels are as high as they are. I wish I could teach a class on it!
@azurephoenix9546

I watched a reality show once years ago it was like a spin off of Americas top model and it was American models vs the uk models and I instantly noticed the extreme lack of confidence in the uk girls so much so that it saddened me a little inside because it wasn’t like they were being humble or modest they just really didn’t have confidence and of course the American girls were over confident but the American girls did so much better because they were using their full potential and the uk girls weren’t because they didn’t know or even consider their full potential. It was a show so who knows if everyone is like that just something I noticed that was a huge difference between the girls in the show.

If your visiting our large cities distance is not going to give you any idea how long it's going to take to get there. Glad you encouraged your friend or mate as you call him to go for it!! I think here in America we have the mentality that failure is just part of life and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. I think it’s more shameful to not try. I mean you may try several different things and fail but one time your going to be successful and you’ll look back at the failures as learning experiences and sort of the pathway to success. One of our sayings here is If first you don’t succeed try, try again.

I've noticed that this trend keeps going on. I'm thinking it is the Europeans that have the problem/issue. What we are doing is pretty much what everyone else here (USA) are doing. It is a function of our society and norms that we all live with. Almost all of us ( our immigrant families) came from some other country, we (they) brought their culture and lifestyles with them and blended them in making 'our' current culture. So what Europeans use to live and brought that here and it became 'American" now. It is evolved.

I think most people who move here actually assimilate, they bring their style and food which in the US we associate with culture because it's a part of our culture, but they assimilate to what is actually culture... The Value hierarchy and structure of your time, ( which is why even their food americanizes to the quick/ easy/ cost effective version) they also take on our mannerisms etc. we have a culture of different nationalities, styles, food etc. because we will try most things, we are joy seekers, entertainment or fun/ leisure or physical and mental comfort etc. is the majority of what we value for our time. These pleasures are easy to be consumed by when your work doesn't satisfy. To summarize our culture is anything of pleasure is valued, money is only valued for it's ability to provide the things we find enjoyment in, we value our freedom to do what we want when we want which is why we tend to hate our jobs or think we don't make enough money. We would prefer to spend our time outside of work, so if we made more per hour we'd have more to spend doing whatever we want... This actually stems from our large corporations sucking the joy out of work. You should love what you do because you should find joy in the value you provide others with through that work.... our job market is not conducive to satisfying work... This is partly what drives our pleasure seeking culture @@webbtrekker534

The other day I had to drive to a close by city to get a prescription that was in limited supply locally. My first reaction, that is was about 30 minutes away. Meaning to me it was that it was close enough and doable. Being too far away would mean the next city that was about 30 miles away and freeway driving and taken maybe 2 hours round trip. Distance is relative to what is comfortable to do.

We also say "no problem" here as well, just depends on where your'e at and who it is. I don't think all Americans are competitive "at all costs" . Many kids are encouraged to do their best but, having fun is just as important. Of course, there are those families that are extremely serious about competing, but it's not all encompassing here. The schools actually try to tone competition down a bit in some ways. Teamwork is a big focus in my kids' school system.

I’ve always told my kids “just do your best”. That doesn’t mean they have to BE the best, but just do their best at whatever they’re doing in their life. Brand loyalty is just sticking with the same brand of something bc it’s your favorite. Like always drinking Coke (not Pepsi or generic cola), always eating McDonald’s or Burger King for fast food, always buying the same brand of jeans bc they’re your favorite, etc. you were absolutely right in telling your friend to take the risk and do something he likes rather than staying at a job he doesn’t. Even if he fails he will have learned something and he can try again. “Without failure there is no success”

We found that Men give directions by time and miles and street names, however women give directions by landmarks. So women are more likely to say make turns at the McDonalds on the corner or go three lights down then turn right.etc. Men would say go to Main street, make a left then go down to 32nd St. It will take about 10 minutes if the traffic is good. Of course this wasn't everybody but it was a trend for the most part.

When traveling, speed limits vary and not all roads are straight or direct, giving someone an average time, helps a person plan. We like to be helpful. I'm in Connecticut, and have family in Michigan. It's a 750 mile trip one way to Detroit, Michigan is about 12 hours. Further north to Traverse City, Michigan, is 19 hours . I always drive, most of us travel with another person and also our kids. Our infrastructure is designed primarily for an auto and truck society. We don't all fly everywhere. It's quite costly for a family. Big cities, have buses, and taxis, or subways, or trains. It's not like the convenience of train travel in Europe, even country to country that is so wonderful. But think about the fact that the entire UK fits inside of the State of Michigan. That gives you a picture in your head of just how big something is. She spoke of traveling to the US a lot. I. Often hear if a lot of people from the UK have traveled to NYC a lot, starting as kids. That blows my mind, that's an expensive trip for us. Even within the states. But, we don't get a lot of paid time off like many Europeans do. We know where Europe is, the vast majority of regular working people cannot afford a trip overseas nor do we have enough paid time off to actually enjoy the country. Many Europeans criticize us heavily for not traveling overseas. We simply don't have the time they have. Plus, we visit family in other states and of course the USA is amazing. I know you understand, please spread it around in the UK when you hear someone criticize us. Many people in Europe get at least , 30 days off paid. That's not typical for average Americans. We have to work a long time at a company to earn that.

IF they do, I will encourage them to continue in it as long as they still enjoy it. The truth is, they will enjoy it more if they are better at it, so I may also help them work at it. I do not care if my kids are "the best" because there will always be someone better. I want them to find things that they can enjoy and be good at because it is fun to be good at things and they COULD potentially make money at it.

Agreed with giving/receiving compliments. If you've noticed you get more when you wear a certain something, or your haircut, it's good to have a "thank you" story response. For example, I have a coat that has a lot of blocks of color. I get a lot of compliments on it. So I say, "Thank you! I call it my "coat of many colors" like Joseph in the Bible." Or if my hair is nice, "Thank you! I'll make sure to tell my stylist!" It's almost a sport in the grocery story....who is going to have something on that's really cool that I can compliment and maybe make them smile today? Yes, brand loyalty is often generational. My parents grew up with Coca-Cola, so I did, too. Wouldn't dream of a different soda (maybe RC). Encouragement and positive reinforcement helps feed confidence which is motivating. When you just criticize someone it takes away their confidence and desire to even try. As for brand loyalty, most of us stick to what we like. Like I love Lucky brand jeans and coach purses and adidas apparel and arenette sunglasses and etnies and dc shoes. For tools I prefer dewalt or Milwaukee. It’s just finding something you like consistently and knowing that you don’t have to even try it to know that you’ll probably like it.

As for competitiveness, any time my brothers and I played poker, dominoes, Monopoly, whatever, our parents and adult relatives cut us no slack. Then when we finally won, it meant something. I would always used the story of Thomas Edison and the lightbulb. When he told a reporter that he tried over 1000 different materials for the filament, the reporter asked him if he didn't feel like a failure trying so many different materials. Directions depend on several items. If it is a straight shot down the road we will tell you in time "it's about 10 minutes that way". However if you need to make several turns to get where you are going we often go all out, "So many (miles/blocks/stoplights) in that direction and you will see a (landmark/store) then turn right onto (street name) go another (miles/block) to your destination. These directions can actually involve up to 6 or 7 turns but the formula stays the same (distance, landmark, turn). So for instance "take this road down past the third stoplight and you will see a Mcdonalds, turn right on Main St then head down 5 blocks to a Walgreens turn left on to North Avenue travel another 2 blocks and that is where you want to be".

Exactly! I get so stressed when people use weather vane directions and street names only! For one, my distance vision isn't great. So reading a street name far enough in advance is difficult. And just stick to left or right. My car does have the compass direction display but it's not in my line of sight when I'm driving. Directions I give would be, "take a left out of the parking lot. About two blocks down there's a huge pine tree, on the right, that sticks out in the road a bit. You need to turn left there into that narrow side street, and immediately the first right us the street your looking for. The place you're looking for will be in the left, maybe four or five buildings. Can't miss it it's yellow." Because that's how I navigate and remember. Landmarks, unusual sights(tree growing out of road), and colors! Lol

You did right by your friend who wants a new job. Keep encouraging him. He should get the new job, become super successful, and leave those "keep you in the gutter with us friends" in the dust. They do that because his success will shine a bright light on the fact they are "settling" in their life. In my opinion. 😁 If people tried to do that to me I would say "Watch me!" and never speak to them again.

I don’t think of our sports teams as brands, but if that’s what she means by brand loyalty, yes we are crazy loyal to our favorite teams but we will also criticize that same favorite team unmercifully when they are losing. But when I think of brand loyalty in America, some of us will say “I will only own a Chevrolet and I would never own or drive a Ford” for example. But as far as sports, yes we can be crazy loyal in our support for our team. A lot of people will even travel all over the country to attend games of their team when they aren’t playing at home.

On the topic of brand loyalty, as an American I know what she means. More than just sports teams it goes beyond that like; Ford vs Chevy for instance. Or tractor/lawn mower with John Deer vs Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, etc...Or DeWalt tools vs Milwaukee or Ryobi or Craftsman kinda thing. Or even clothing like Nike, under armour, etc...

We are a huge land mass. Saying , "the trip to a specific city will take about 2 hours, but it depends on traffic .". Describing time it takes is much more realistic for the person asking, versus saying "120 miles at 60 mph. " Travel time depends a lot on traffic on the road, time of day, and how fast each person drives.

One other thing is that it’s a common cultural trait for Americans to think their time is valuable (some would even say we can be impatient). So, letting people know how much time they’ll lose is considered a good thing.

Back in my day if you were going to do something you were told to do it well or it is not worth doing. I did the same to my kids also. Because it will give them discipline to have pride in what they do. I was all ways told if your going to half-ass it don't do it. I told my kids the same lol. Congrats on your 100K so proud for you.

You want to push your kids to strive to be the best. If you’re going to do something, especially if it cost money and a lot of time, then I expect my boys to work hard at it. They will take those lessons and put it towards other aspects of life.

As far as brand loyalty, you see it a lot in things like Ford Vs. Chevy. If you’re a Chevy guy, you would sort of tease the other guy for liking Ford. Of course this is all in good fun for the most part.

6:40 The "thank you- of course" thing is very common, but even in the states you'll see a generational divide of how people interpret responses. Many older folk will understand "no problem" as "oh, so you wouldn't helped if it was difficult? How rude!" When what is meant is more "oh, it was no trouble for me to pause and help, don't even worry" The "of course" means something like "of course I'm happy to help!" And the "mhm" is similar - it's understood as an acknowledgment - "I heard the thank you and appreciate it, but am also continuing on..."

At 80 years old I am definitely an older folk. I would NEVER interpret "no problem" to mean you wouldn't help if the problem were difficult. My friends are also old folk and they see no problem the same way you do. Where did you get that idea? One of us is a bit out of the old folk loop.

@@VirginiaPeden-Harrington-qd5zu I worked grocery for 7 years and heard that one quite a lot. I often got corrected! That being said, it's not unilateral - I'm sure there are many who are OK with it like yourself! Could maybe just be the people I grew up around.

I work as a front desk receptionist at a hotel and I was saying "No problem", and my boss (in her forties) told me not to use it because people might take it that way. She was like, you used to work at Chick-fil-A, why not just say "My pleasure" so I brought that back into my response for "Thank you"

In the US when someone responds to Thank You with OF COURSE it means Of course I would do that for you. Go for it. Get er done. You go guy or You go girl and just do it or right on are all used quite often in the US. We love to root for people to do well at whatever they endeavor to do.

We do tend to send our kids to sports or extracurricular activities. It helps them learn to work through difficulties, gives them respect for working as a team, and helps keep them fit and out of trouble.

We don't use football fields to describe distance, but do so for size. "Oh, that new Wegman's (grocery store) is 2 football fields, pal, so take a snack and put your walkin' shoes on."

I don’t do points or loyalty cards. But I do tend to stick with the same brands or stores. For brands it’s because I like what I like. For stores I like knowing where everything thing is. I don’t do miles. I do say it’s about ____ minutes away. I never expected my child to be the best. But if they wanted to do something like join a team they were told that they had to put in their best effort. And once they joined a team and made that commitment, it was just that, a commitment to the team and they couldn’t quit just because they didn’t want to do it anymore. They could quit at the end of the season or the end of the class and didn’t have to do it again if they didn’t want to. But no half way through quitting.

Loyalty comes from saying the Pledge of Allegiance. You learn early on if you are loyal to a thing a place or.a person you benefit from that loyalty, at least that's what I believe.

The "of course" in reply to "thank you" is something that replaced "no problem" a while back in some parts of the USA and I think it is a way to say the same thing. The older generations say, "My pleasure" and I am an older generation. The younger generation does the "Mmm, mmm" and I think they are giving a positive vocalization. They do shorthand even in typing and texting and everything so we need to understand that their shorthand response likely means the same thing as our formal responses.

I'd say the brand loyalty ties in a lot with the competitiveness. Growing up, examples were being a Chevy family vs. a Ford family or Coke vs. Pepsi. You stick with your brand and made fun of "the other side." Today it's Apple vs. Android. You stick with one or the other, never cross, and poke at the other side.

A lot of times a compliment can easily be misconstrued as flirting. Not saying she wasn't being hit on, just saying sometimes it happens. Reciprocated comments can be answered as "No problem", "You're welcome" "Mhmm" and the silent nod. Brand loyalty. Some places you are just into a team because it's hometown, or been the family favorite for generations. Also some grocery stores will have a members program that the more you spend the more you can save on fuel (a lot of large grocery stores also have gas stations). Conversational short hand is common in a lot of places. Sometimes it's just dumb (like calling pizza as Zah), and sometimes you come across something that sticks like Y'all (you all). Competitive spirit...well, you've seen vids about our military... Taking risks. We have a lot of philosophical adages we use to push ourselves. "Go big or go home", "Do what you love and you will never work again", "The difference between a master and a student is that a master has failed more times than a student has tried". Plus some of the more gloomier weather in the UK has people more pessimistic about the outcome of taking chances. NOT all UK of course!
