As a Texan, think about this: it takes roughly 12 hours to drive from Houston to Amarillo (coast to northwestern tip). Keep in mind, once you get a little over an hour west of San Antonio (the halfway point) the speed limit is 80mph pretty much the whole way. I live kind of in the middle of the state so it takes me 7 hours in any direction just to get out of Texas, unless I want to go to Mexico. Then it's only 3 😬

There are rowhouses as you described (houses smashed right up against one another) in the US, in big cities. I think they call the "brownstones" in NYC, but have never been and could be mistaken. So the density in big cities is probably more what you're used to in the UK, though I'm pretty sure you could get a nice cottage in the countryside somewhere if you really wanted. When I lived in CA I had a condo about four miles from the coast. I moved to ND a few years ago and bought a proper house. The condo would fit in my basement with 200sf left over. I sold the condo for more than I paid for the house, so take that into consideration. The house is closer to the local river, the Red River of the North, than the condo was to the Pacific ocean if that's of any consequence.

Texas was it's own country for 10 years before it joined the Union. The Alamo was part of the Texas Revolution when we fought Mexico for Independence. One thing to bear in mind when thinking about the space we have in the US is that the population isn't uniformly distributed. So while you have enormous states like Montana with very few people, you also have much more urban places, like NYC and the like, where a lot more people are concentrated in a much smaller area. So in those places, you have a lot of house styles and sizes that are probably similar to what you're used to in the UK. Also, to compare relative sizes of other European countries to US states, Texas is a little larger than France, California is a little smaller than Sweden, South Carolina is slightly smaller than Austria, Connecticut is slightly larger than Montenegro, and Rhode Island (the smallest state) is a little less than twice the size of Luxembourg.

Same miles/kilometers traveled just we dont leave our bigger country. Many of us, if we had to stamp a passport everytime we went to another state, would have filled 2 or 3 of them by the time we reach 30. Especially those of us that live on the edge of a state. I used to live in the SE corner of Kansas. We would would go to the grocery store in Oklahoma and the Dr in Missouri. We may cross state lines just visiting neighbors. I live in the middle of Kansas. My son and my daughter both live about 2 and a half hours away..but they still live in Kansas. Thats London to Salisbury and another 30 minutes..

Alaska is about 665,000 sq. miles. or a little more than 1.7 million sq. km. Europe is ahout 4 million sq. miles so Alaska is huge but nowhere close to as big as Europe(our entire country is pretty much as big as Europe though.) You are right about it being largely unhabitated though. Alaska only has 738k people, as of the last census or only 1.1 people per sq.mile, far and away the lowest in the country(the next closest is Wyoming at just under 6 per sq.mile.) But even this undersells it, because just under 400k or over half the state's population live in just the Anchorage Metro.
@MegaMagicdog Жыл бұрын
Alaska is a beautiful state but it truly is the last frontier! You really feel isolated once you leave the city of Anchorage. News flash, that is basically what they are already. Instead of 50 countries, we have 50 states and each state makes it's own laws. What is legal in one state may not be legal in another one. The original idea was to have the power in each state and they would be loosely tied together (think off ropes tying each one together and the name of that rope would be the Federal Government). But since the 50's the Federal Government has seized more and more and more power for itself; but, we are not under tyranny yet. Example, president biden asked Governor DeSantis of Florida to shut down his state for the pandemic and the Governor REFUSED. It turned out to be a wise decision; because, Florida is a semi tropical climate we have a far larger number of 55 and older citizens than any other state. Many citizens wait until they retire then buy homes in Florida and keave the colder northern states and move down here. The corona virus was supposed to be especially devestating to the senior citizens; but, our citizens fared far, fat better than the average citizens in all the other states. The president DID NOT have the authority to force Governor DeSantis to comply.😮
