That isn't what was said. What was said that when someone calls themselves Americans because they are from the USA, it is beginning to be seen as rude by other people in countries on the continent(s). Spend some time in any forum online and it is becoming a very real debate. I am not saying it is right or wrong, just that it is becoming a thing. And referring to US citizens as Usians is also a thing.

@@lorrainetrotter4737 No, the (imaginary) issue is that Americans are supposedly calling Canadians, Mexicanos, and South Americans "Americans." I've never once heard an American refer to someone from another country as "American." We typically refer to foreign nationals by their country of origin: e.g., "Canadian," "Brazilian," "Mexicano," etc. We often attach "-American" like, "Brazilian-American" or "Mexican-American," which is actually used to signify the importance of one's cultural upbringing while also imparting unity and togetherness. It's a sign of respect for people who traveled halfway across the world to become Americans while also not being dismissive of the cultural impact they bring to our melting pot. We also use terms like, "Japanese-American," "German-American," or "Slovak-American." The only exception to the rule is for Brits who are often referred to as, "British ex-pat" or "British dual-citizen." American English is certainly one of the most difficult languages to ascertain, but there's enough information out there that people who do even a modicum of research should see these titles as being respectful of their culture.

@charlieschuder9976 No, that is not the issue. I have seen many actual debates about US citizens referring to themselves as American and being called out for it specifically. As I said, I am not debating whether it is correct or not. I am stating what is happening and how other English speaking citizens of other countries have adopted referring to US citizens as Usians. And, it is happening a lot online. If you haven't seen it yet, it is possible you will at any time. It can be found in a lot of forums about various topics. It actually can get very heated on both sides.

I've encountered a lot of people from different countries that are either visiting or have moved to America and not all but a lot act as though Americans have to change our way of life to make them feel better. Example, I'm a grocery store director and said hello to a guy. He looked at me and said "unless I plan to have a conversation with him, I shouldn't say hello" I asked where he was from and he said Poland. So I politely said welcome to America and it's our custome and he isn't in Poland. So "what's rude" goes both ways

I definitely agree with you. Many countries have joined with many Brits in telling us we are completely wrong, it's easy for many countries, however, (not all their people), to tell us we are wrong. They sound completely ignorant of our history. And many are. Britain has created its own narrative of The American Revolution in some ways and erroneously believe we should speak British. We speak American English that has been influenced by many of our ancestors from all over the world. We have no desire to be British, that is their job. My job is to be a citizen of the USA. I love my job. Also, WE have all been influenced by the ancient great nations of the indigenous people. From coast to coast, far north and far south. Many of these sovereign nations are alive and well and frankly we are also descendants of people that have had a hand in destroying these people. We all need more education of the true inhabitants of the Americas.

Wanna know why/how, in the UK, the double fingers/knuckles out became an insult? During the Hundred Years War, the English were known for their devastating longbowmen. These longbows could take a man's head clean off at distance. So, whenever the french captured english longbowmen, they would cut off their index and middle fingers so they could never shoot a bow again. Thus, before battle, the english would all throw up their two fingers to show the french they were going to have a bad day. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

No, I don't find Canadians easily insulted by us. I grew up in Detroit and travel to Canada often. As a citizen of the USA, the way you worded your comment comes across as arrogant and ignorant. Ignorant as being clueless and complete disregard for another country's perspective. It's clear you don't give a crap about another country. And that's how you perpetuate a dislike of the US. A lot of Canadians are offended if you call them Americans. Some Mexicans, Central and South Americans seem to be the ones making a fuss about people from the USA calling themselves Americans, but Mexicans shorten the name of their country from the United States of Mexico (or United Mexican States) to Mexico and call themselves Mexicans, not some ridiculous mess of initials. If someone from Argentina wants to call themselves American instead of Argentine, the confusion is on them. If its a European just trying to make trouble, they can stay out of it. I don't tell them to call themselves Eurasian instead of Germans, French, or whatever.

Depending on which part of the US you're in, you're more likely to get a negative reaction by using "American" or "America". I lived in AZ for 45 years (until 6 years ago) and I witnessed it a handful of times. The most common phrasing was a matter of fat toned, "There are many countries in America." I'm old enough to remember when America meant the US and The Americas meant the continents North America, South America, and the region of Central America collectively. Even in those situations I have never heard anyone say USAians. People just say, "I'm from the US."

Calling someone from the US ‘American’ is not rude to us. Asking someone about how much money they earn is rude and no one’s business. But just asking what their profession is during a conversation should be fine. Asking a random person walking down the street might seem a bit weird though. I agree with the Japanese Culture about where to eat food. No one watch to see other people eat. And no one wants to clean up any trash they left on the walkway. I believe asking for sauce can indeed be interpreted as rude anywhere. I believe the reason is because the food should taste good without it. Adding it implies the food taste bad and insults the chef. An example of this is steak. A perfectly cooked steak does not need sauce. All the flavor is already there. The greeting example he used of Chinese culture happens in other Asian cultures as well. It’s a respect thing. I great my friends with hugs.
