Also, the "water polo" injury was kind of a joke. FDR couldn't shower because he couldn't stand after being paralyzed by polio. However, amazingly, most people actually had no idea that the President was in a wheelchair because back then they'd just ask the press not to take pictures of his wheelchar and they'd agree not to!

Well, the USS Iowa didn’t put the hot tub Jacuzzi on the ship just for the president but because the president had once had polio and he couldn’t stand up but it was really hard and painful so he sat in a wheelchair most of the time which is something most people didn’t know about Franklin Roosevelt. Pretty amazing., huh?? my dad had polio and thank God he made a full recovery, and he had to learn how to use his muscles and build them up all over again, including his arms, because he was totally paralyzed!! He was six years old and I came home with a really bad headache and then after that he got polio, but he lived and he couldn’t even hardly move his arms, but grandma and put him in a baby bed, and he started using the sides to work up his upper arm strength, and his chest, and it took several months. Once his arms were stronger, he was able to pull himself up in this baby bed to stand because his legs still didn’t have any strength. I think it took him a total of five or six months to recover, but it didn’t stop him from running 5 miles a day until he was almost 62

The Yamato was Japan's BIGGEST, MOST ARMORED AND ARMED, battleship ever produced. Often considered the "flagship" of the ENTIRE Japanese Navy, despite having very little actual combat activity, simply due to the size and "projection" of naval threat. It became a national symbol of Japanese domination and was considered to be "unsinkable" by any Navy in the world. THEN it ran across the US Navy, and they sunk it within a matter of MINUTES, sending it to the bottom of the sea where it is now a "coral reef". And now the "legacy" of the Yamato is of 2 variations. 1) For the Japanese, it is still a considerable "symbol" of Japanese pride, seen in various forms of entertainment and numerous memorials or references in historical records. 2) For the Americans, it is just considered another number on the scoreboard for the US Navy.

Tbf, feel like that lack of combat activity actually came back to bite them. If they used on the US early on when the US was still on its back foot, would of actually gotten the crew some experience, and it would of been a bit trickier to take down. But, instead, they had it hiding through most of the war, then try to use it to basically solo a whole task force like idiots and it backfired spectacularly. Basically proof that while you can have the biggest stick, doesn't really matter if you don't have the experience to effectively use it.

A few cool points on that, they made two of them, the Yamato and the Musashi (hull of the third was made into an aircraft carrier). The other is it had 18" main guns; the Iowa class had 15" guns.

@@77marioland Sorry to nitpick here, but those are 16" on the Iowa, not 15". With longer range, more accuracy, more velocity, and able to reload faster, they were actually more powerful than those monster 18". Just wanted to point that out. TFE mentioned this in an earlier video on the Iowa class.

Just going by what The Fat Electrician described, the chief torpedo guy only removed two on purpose, because he was as surprised as anyone else when the commander called for a 3rd torpedo. I don't know the procedure for torpedo drills. Maybe he was supposed to take every primer out of every torpedo, but they only ever do two drills, so he only bothered to take out two. Or maybe he was only instructed to do two, and the commander fucked up by doing three.

To be fair to FDR's pardon of the Chief Torpedoman, it's not like a single torpedo would have sunk an Iowa. Damage, yes. Inconvenience, sure. Embarrass, probably. But not sink. Although had it hit those nine 16's would certainly have made scrap metal out of the destroyer with one salvo.

To give you an example of “military cover ups”: The official report the night the Commander of the entire European United States Army went down in a helicopter the official report read: “The Staff Duty NCO ( the guy in charge of being at the radio in case of an emergency. The guy who the whole group (a bunch of military personnel) counted on to be alert and available to sound the alarm) was indisposed in the toilet due to food poisoning.” When in reality he had been absent from the entire military base for 3 hours before the incident and didn’t return for another 3 hours. Fortunately, I didn’t receive any reputations and was actually commended by my 1st Sgt for keeping the situation in house.

WWII US Mk-15 Torpedoes had two speed settings, 45knots for short range (6000 yards) and 25 knots for long range (15,000 yards), and at these speeds it could take several minutes to cover the shorter range and many minutes to cover the longer one, hence the 3-5+ minutes.

@@BlueTeam-John-Fred-Linda-Kelly knots are nautical miles per hour and yes that is different from land or air mph but the higher the better...i would believe the slower speed for the longer range is because of fuel
@chrismaverick9828
@chrismaverick9828 9 ай бұрын
@@dwaynedittoe2248 exactly. The fuel/air supplies are limited and the consumption rate determines speed and longevity. THe reason why the Japanese Long Lances were so much faster and longer range than any of the other torpedoes is because they used pure oxygen rather than air, making them more efficient and powerful per volume of fuel.

L3WG needs to check out the feats/story of USS Laffey. She literally could not be sunk. She's the exact opposite of USS Willam D. Porter. In that she is incredibly lucky. She took about 12 kamikazes in WW2, and still wouldn't die, and attacked a Japanese battleship in the war, at point blank range, which was a huge risk. Despite all that, she survived many more battles to become a museum ship years later. Toughest ship no doubt.

The Yamato was a Japanese battleship. It had 18 inch guns. The biggest guns the US ever mounted on a ship were 16 inch. Because of its size and the size of the guns, many still consider the Yamato to be the most powerful battleship ever commissioned. The Fat Electrician maintains, and I agree, that it may have been big but it was not the best. The US sunk the Yamato. It is now, therefor, serving as a coral reef under water. That's why he said he was going to point that out as often as he could for the rest of his life.
