What is a L5D? A 5500HD medium duty Cab and Chasis powered by a Duramax engine commonly known as a L5P just derated to do work! We take our 5500HD and head to the Dyno to see what HP and TQ this Kodiak puts down when doing work!

We have it tore down currently to those keeping up with the build , to be realist we first are swapping to a 2500 charger they are bigger on the compressor side , housing is bigger , turbine is the same . We will stay stock fuel and see what type of games we make. These trucks do require some modifications over the 2500 to make it all work ! Parts are will be sent off to powder coat so as soon as they arrive we will be back on the dyno see the results !

@@CRAZYDIRTHEAD We’ve got this completed with a 2500 series charger just have to get you guys the video released . It’s literally finished and just has to make it on the dyno for everyone to see !!!

I own one of these for work. I pull a 21k tri axle dump trailer and when loaded to the gills I’ll hit the scale at 38-40,000 lbs it’s completely stock. I’m not upset about the lack of power but more would always be nice. So I’ll looking forward to see what becomes available for this rig.

Look at the HP/torque on a F550 and they're pretty close to the Chevy. MD trucks are massively detuned because of EPA idle regulations, and these tend to idle a lot. Want to pull 31 to 37K buy a 3500 HD, sounds weird right?

shit my at4 never gets over 180 degrees, never figured out why its soo cool and it lives with a 16" dump trailer on it.

its a SHAME how underpowered these truck are!! put a big single turbo on it and get RID of all that crap behind the turbo! then you'll have a real tow pig!

I’m a power hungry man just like the rest of the guys who buy pickups trucks for just a daily driver a work truck and a work truck that when you step on it loaded or empty that will pin you in the seat on a hill loaded and flat walk off like a hot rod gas engine. Check on plug and play aftermarket with a larger turbo. What ever the upgrade we all hope that it’s a setup reasonable enough that you can offer to the public for sale as a kit with several different power level options. It’s real easy to spend someone’s else’s money. I have a 2019 GMC 3500HD dual wheel one ton I’m interested in upgrading my power level on. Not for racing but to be able to keep up with anyone not pulling a load while I’m pulling my 32ft gooseneck duel wheel loaded maybe a bit overloaded. Just a bit over. Anyway I am watching to see what way that you go with it power wise. Make us proud. Liked Subscribed & Shared

Honestly, IMHO, compounds is the way to go on a tow rig. Best way to get truly efficient power through all gears, lower EGT better fuel economy etc., plus, who doesn’t want 2 turbos. 366 with a 475/488 and be done. Obviously supporting mods too haha. But then again, it’s not my money I’m spending so I got tons of ideas hahaha

I developed that truck I worked for navistar who developed these trucks. They are really not made for pulling they are made for hauling like box trucks or small dump but these use a Navistar chassis

I think what Chris is getting at is that the truck is not rated to tow based on its GCWR. It has a higher GVWR. It is irrelevant if the truck will pull the weight if the truck isn't rated from the factory for it. In the event of an accident all the lawyers will look at is the GCWR and if you had exceeded it. You get stopped by the DOT all they will look at is what you weigh compared to the GCWR. People always claim vehicles don't hold up but then don't use them for their intended purpose.

That engine is designed to run wot all day every day for around 350 thousand miles you hot rod it up it will loose engine and transmission longevity. Navistar tested and adjusted these settings to optimize low cost of ownership high vehicle up time.

RIP chevy kodiak 2009ish i think? Those were and will always be the coolest chevy/gmc ever made. The cab space was mint!

At least you have a truck to work on. Ordered a 5500Hd in April 2021 and my order was canceled in January by GMC because the 2022 models were coming out. You would think they would have kept me in line for a 2022. Had to reorder. Still waiting. Please let us know how your build turns out.

I have one of the long wheelbase crewcabs and its for sure a turd. I vote good sized single. It is a MDT and meant to be reliable, big single is less moving parts to break. It can have all the turbo lag in the world and it would still make more power earlier than these do stock. Gas half tons outpull these stock.

POS, just turned 100k in my 4500. Nothing but trouble out of the “SAFETY” BS. From the dpf putting it in limp mode to the wheel sensors making it go into reduce power . Never will I buy another Duramax. I put 300k on my Cummins and never had no more than a water pump and wheel bearing replaced. I’m goin back to ram as soon as I can find a dealer that swap with me.

It is not a Top kick or Kodiak like you like to call it. Why not call a Cruze a malibu? This is a Silverado medium duty. Now that said, i pretty well agree with the underlying rational of this video.

I just got one of these for pulling a 30 yard dumpster trailer... I had no idea it was de rated ... I will be running it hard maxed out and have been... I understood when you said it’s like you hit a brick wall at 70 with a load ... I just switched from Fords for 27yrs because I’m tired of how under-engineered Navistar has become since the 6.0 scam. I’m trying to get the lost power but I don’t want smoke or nasty smelling fumes... Lmk what you think

The medium duty trucks can tow but the 3500 can tow more than them legally because if the rating

oh plus working on is a dream compared to 1 ton and smaller i own the 1 ton version it gorgios and powerful but an nightmare to work on

What ever you guys do please let us know because, like I said in a previous comment we own the very same truck with a 12 ft. Concrete Bed it. The thing won’t literally get out of it own way here in Michigan where the hill are small nothing like Tennessee has, so with that being said we diffidently are interested in some kind of tune or being able to change out the Turbo and Injectors. I told my son we should have drove them all before buying one, I actually thought well all of our other trucks with Duramax Motors have been absolutely Monsters then along come this Turd. Frustrating as he heck.

I don’t want to see what is “cool”, I want to see what keeps the truck functional. I bought mine to use for work, I tow with it, haul heavy loads on the bed, and will use it as a replacement for my chase truck in Mexico. I need reliability. I love seeing that you guys have a genuine interest in making these trucks better but please make it functional, obtainable power for the working guys that own them. Looking forward to seeing progress!

I have this truck pull a 5th wheel and travel in a pickup camper. did you upgrade to pull like a a 1 ton? I hate how this pulls my 18000 lbs camper up hills.

Why not put a stealth 67 & the good exhaust manifolds step up the injectors keep it stock appearance? It would still make 500 to 550 wouldn't it?

Switch to a Ford. The Chevy hd trucks have a legal max combined weight rating (so truck, payload, trailer all combined) of 30k. Not worth the $ you are investing just to get pulled over for being over the trucks capacity’s.

You can pay when registering for additional GCWR. DMV's will ignore anything for money basically. I talked to highway patrol and they said its 100% legal and done all the time.

We have one of these but it’s in the form of a 35 foot Motorhome. It’s 13 feet tall with a bunk over and 4x4. Loaded for camping we should be around 20k lbs. here in Colorado I personally feel like it has great power. I can set the cruise at 72 and go anywhere with zero drama. My temps stay good and it very rarely downshifts. We came from a 30 foot gas ford V10 Class A so maybe I’m just stoked about being able to go more than 30 over the mountain.

Gas and diesel engines are different animals, hard to compare. A more useful comparison would be Duramax 5500 vs power stroke F550

Medium duty trucks are rated differently than pickups for some EPA duty cycle reason...not really sure why. Dodge chassis cab 4500 & 5500s are the same...derated. Those have less horsepower & torque than the standard output Cummins in the 2500. So GM didn't produce a dog because of their own choice, their hands were tied. As the consumer, you should have all the right to improve upon that.

100% reason why we bought the this platform. Room for improvement is in the hundreds of horsepower with simple up grades. We wanted the L5p engine just did not like the body styles of the 3500 Dually so the 5500 was a fit for us.

The Ram 45 and 5500s have a 100 more ft/lbs of torque than these things do. They get the torque sooner too. A ram 5500 or and f550 will take one of these to gapplebees.

I’ve been a fan of Jason Wehrli and WCFAB forever. Jason has walked and talked me through several LLY and LML issues. However it appears the WCFAB lost interest in the LML after the big EPA purge. Does the WCFAB products work in your applications?

If it is a 5500 HD, why do you all it a medium duty truck? Is it because it's not a semi? On thee 5500 L5P what is its maximum towing weight?

i have been researching these trucks since day 1 what you said here confirms what others have said less confidently then you and i have been wanting to get 1 with l5p injectors or possibly higher flow if i could find a reasonable price and 67 turbo i like the duramax tuners version and a matching airhorn after waranty exires a delete maybe but until then a pulsar v3

You should do a compound set up, they spool fast down low and up high. They are more efficient than a single s400 overall

To pull mount 🦅 with the performance your expecting better show up with something in the 1500-1800lb of torque range. 1000lb and a automatic transmission ain't going to cut it
