Nick Priegnitz of DuramaxTuner.com walks through the air flow of the 2017 + L5P Duramax. He walks through the EGR, up-pipes, M-pipe or y-bridge, and of course does a complete tear down of the L5P turbo charger.

Thanks for another great video Nick! Between DuramaxTuner and Gale Banks, I think I’ll be buying an L5P in the coming years. Seems like a reliable platform so far compared to the LML. Hopefully the tuning and deleting process will get simpler and more cost effective as the aftermarket releases more and more products for these things!

You said the limitation is the heat so safe is roughly 550 could you push the turbo more with the cat deleted

The "cat" or DOC is not the limiting factor to the turbo. At least at this point we don't believe it is. More than likely the small compressor wheel and turbine wheel are going to limit how efficiently the turbo can make cold air.

The only thing i care about on my L5P is getting the EGR & DEF off the truck asap

RSD N/A , just to do all of that will cost 5grand on a l5p. better to stick with a lml or just wait a few years. I'm sure prices will come down gradually. I will only by a l5p duramax if itbwas possible to delete it for under 3grand for everything.

@@mattreb5748 I agree, and had I known, I would have done just that, but unfortunately, while looking for a well-used lml, I veered off track and bought a brand new l5p in 2017 ;/ I will just have to wait it out.

Serial data module will be hard to put a programmer on it. Will shut the system

@@3DProductions well the SCR is mounted to the back of the turbo (we did a L5P turbo review you can watch) so that takes a several hours to remove the turbo, most people with a $60K + truck prefer to a really nice EGR delete which is a lot more than a few block off plates, and the cost of L5P Tuning is (for delete or non delete) over $4,500 without core charges. Due to EPA restrictions we do not offer any deletes. The LML is still a strong platform that is going to fit a lot of peoples needs. For those with an L5P that would prefer to keep their emissions equipment intact and still want all the benefits of tuning, we can help.

I've noticed every time I shut my L5P off, the veins open and close about 4 times...wonder if GM did that to keep veins from sticking. My LBZ would often throw a code for the vein position sensor.

truckguyjoe Yes they do this to keep the vanes free, as well as checking proper calibration. The L5Ps also cycle the vanes when you open the drivers side door

@Dobbies Revenge If your truck is just a daily driver it comes down to preference. Most people will tell you that ownership cost of a diesel is a little higher than an equivalent gas truck. However, if you want gobs of low end torque and a potential for a 500+ RWHP truck the diesel is going to be for you.

I know this is an older video, but you state the factory egt cut is 1530f. I don't believe that to be the case, I'm pretty sure it's 1471f. I know it doesn't sound like much but a material engineer will be able to tell you how much percentage strength your losing and why the factory calibration cuts fuel at anything over that temp.

I am no way as experienced as you guys at duramax tuner but, It sounds like some nitrous is needed to keep the EGT down or maybe a meth system. Or at the least a nitrous ring to spray on the intercooler.

We generally shy away from injectables on street driven trucks but some solid R&D would be interesting.

1530 is the shut down temp on these trucks? That seems to be extremely high considering I set my defueling on my truck at 1250-1350. Whenever people ask what is safe these are the temps I tell them to keep in mind. Are these higher temps around 1500 still considered safe?

Great questions. Is the 1530 the limp mode temp, or is that when the computer starts defueling? I would like to know when heat soak becomes a problem. I've always been told to keep my 04 cummins under 1300 while towing or stuff can begin to melt. I would be very impressed if these new duramax engines can withstand 1500* towing temps.

?? We have actually met Gale and think he is a great guy with an awesome product line. If you prefer the derringer we can honestly say that you should go for it. Just to be clear though, our Custom Tuning is very different than a wired in external module. We are able to include a much higher peak horsepower and torque output that is made capable by our extensive ECM/TCM mapping. We had a lot of stuff back when it was a newer platform. We do love the LML. Folks just like the LBZ due to no DPF. the L5P due to it's power. The LML is a great platform.

Can you replace the EGR with water/Meth injection and still run the DEF system? I would think it would cool much better.

Not sure about the “hard science” but I would think it would cool the combustion chamber immensely compared to using exhaust. Plus, you do not kill power with exhaust. Also, the water/meth would help clean the exhaust system. I have been thinking about this for a while now, Ha!

Depending on what you want out of a truck and what your budget is for upgrades, modifying your current LML may be a good option.

Honest question to those on the know: Why hasn't GM gone to reverse flow flow heads ? My take away at the end: Needs a BIGGER turbo to go beyond 500hp.

Ppei has dyno numbers over 570whp if my memory serves me right, but like nick said I'm sure it was very hot 1700+ degrees egts

They’ve made 570 with just tune no delete. down/up pipe, and almost everything else was stock

Correct, 570 with an all stock truck has been hit but the EGTs and other indicators were well past safe (at least in all of our testing). As far as why GM doesn't go to reverse flow heads, our guess is that they don't see a need for more than 500 RWHP.

Diesel engines do not have cats ! it's called a DOC diesel oxidation catalyst it's for the dpf

Good luck if you have big tires will set whole bunch of codes.... crankshaft reluctor is in the back of the engine and will cause vibration.... smh.... every day learning some thing new with l5p
