Bonjour! Thank you! This was awesome. I finally got it!! Your accent is beautiful. :)

@ashburnhouse Sure, du is the contraction of de le and au of à le, je viens du marché 'I come from the market), je vais au marché (I go to the market), the problem is that it is not always easy to know which preposition to use, most of them depend on the verb, for example: j'obéis au director (I obey the director), here in French the verb is obéir à (it is a prepositional verb) but not in English, so you need to know the verbs and their prepositions.

As you can see in the title à can be with la too.

thank you and you are right, unfortunately there is no rule to know when to use à or de, you need to learn the expressions. It is the same thing for plus de, moins de, beaucoup de, pas de, they are expressions you need to know, but it is a good point for you as we can hear many people saying beaucoup des, but it is wrong.

@jerichblue21 le? I don't understand, le is not a contraction, for the feminie we say à la but the masculine is au, using à le is an error.

Thank you very much for all your help! I swear I've learnt more from you in a few weeks than I have from my teachers in 7 years. I am confused however as to how you know when to use 'à' and when to use 'de', they both mean the same thing so which one do you use?! Also I know there are times when you don't conjugate the de, for example after quantities (plus de, moins de). But, other than that, do you ALWAYS conjugate it? :) thank you!

I'm really confused as to how prepositions work inbetween words like: Rondelle à la menthe(Mint Patty), Muffins aux carottes(Carrot Muffins), Café au lait(Coffee With Milk), etc. How do I know which prepositions to use, and are the nouns always written in reverse?
@Frenchspanishonline9 жыл бұрын
***** about the prepositon à, it depends on the gender of the following word or if it start with a vowel: à la menthe because menthe is feminine au lait, because lait is masculine, aux carottes (plural) etc...

Im confused to your au second example wich is "my foot hurts." So do i just use au before every masculine word?
@Frenchspanishonline9 жыл бұрын
MarkP before all masculine words starting with a consonnant, as 'au' is the contraction of 'à le'
@Dremezy0279 жыл бұрын
Learn French with Pascal but where im confused at is that there is no "to" word in " my foot hurts" example. So my question is how "au" contraction was used in there. Many thanks.
@Frenchspanishonline9 жыл бұрын
MarkP the thing is that some verbs are prepositional in French and not in English and viceversa, so to hurt means avait mal à (au) or faire mal à (au)
@Dremezy0279 жыл бұрын
Learn French with Pascal thank you for that very useful information. The confusion is gone lol. Cheers! 👏
