A big reason for the fighting lecture during Game 4 was the disgrace that happened at Chicago Stadium between the Hawks and Stars in Game 3. There were tons of fights in that game, and the fights spilled into the stands. It was international news. So the topic of fighting, which was always prevalent in 80s/90s hockey, was a hot topic during this week.

Dale Hunter on the Nordiques is the current Head Coach and part owner of the London Knights of the OHL, he's been the coach for nearly 25 years minus a 1 year stint in Washington. He turned around a loosing team into a bonified dynasty with 2 memorial cups, and 5 OHL championships during his tenure, as well as the team selling out a 9,000 seat arena every night

Hey Pinholes, I had to chuckle about your comments how some of those goals wouldn’t be scored on goalies after 1995. As a beer league goalie who played from 1970 to 2005 I can relate. My old pads from the late 60’s were flimsy, leather and kapok, and between sweat and melted ice would waterlog and weigh a ton. I didn’t play from 1975 to 1993. When my kids got into hockey in the early ‘90’s, I also got back into it. Bought new pads in 1996. Such a difference! Bigger chest & arm protector. Synthetic leather which didn’t absorb water. Much lighter, cooler. And even those weren’t modern. The biggest difference now is the goalie leg pads with the medial “slide pad” which allows the goalie to slide on his knees from post to post without having to get back up on his skates. To me, that totally changed goaltending! And maybe not for the better. The old pads forced the goalies to come out farther to cut down the angle and demanded they be better skaters. The old goalies had more character, as opposed to the current ones who all have the same robotic style! Anyway, just some historical perspective from an old netminder pushing 70 who now just plays golf. Cheers!

Watching the Nordiques battled the Canadiens in the playoffs was like watching a real war between the two teams. The atmosphere and the intensity level was high. Who ever wins the war reigns superiority over the other team. I remembered the last war between these two teams in 1993, after Montreal was down two games to nothing and heading back to the Montreal Forum for games three and four, there was complete silence in the Canadiens locker room. You could just hear a pin drop in their dressing room. The war of words was so intense back then. The players were motivated by their favorite head coach Jacques Demers. And they won game three in overtime scored by their captain Kirk Muller and the rest is history. The Canadiens won 11 straight playoff games and scored 10 consecutive overtime victories. Eventually becoming Canada's last Stanley Cup winner to the present day.

Edmonton-Calgary had yet to start, and Ottawa wouldn't see its team for another decade (or so.) I would love to see the Nordiques back, even if the rivalry isn't what it used to be. We should respect the game and its rich history of memorable moments.

Loved this one. Gave retro hockey a balance of modern and classic vibes. Super fun. And the ending was a really nice touch. If you want another series for a retro Playoffs Past I can recommend the 1986 Adams Finals. The same Habs played the…well, I guess according to the NHL, they’re my Whalers. Lots to talk about. Games were basically all close, including Game 7 OT (that somehow ended 2-1 in the damn 80s). There was Doug Jarvis…on the other side of the ice. 22-year-old Whalers captain Ron Francis had just won the first playoff series he played in and would have a…peculiar stat line in the series.

Fantastic job as always. The 84 brawl and overall topic has been done to death, so it's great to see and learn about the beginnings of their beef. And that's just a little bit of what can be taken away from this 82 series and that timeframe in hockey. Damn shame there's basically zero chance the Coyotes franchise moves to Quebec, even though that's really the best thing possible for the game and the fans. There's still room for growth in the US without the continued sacrifice of another Canadian team, that's been proven already and recently.

Growing up in this rivalry was like no other. I became a Nordique fan by simple luck. I was supposed to a Canuck fan cause run in 82, at the age of being 11, I got confuse of the name of the city with flock of new teams. So I told by bigger brothers that I was a Quebec, but not realizing it wasn't canucks team at the time. Prior years I was a Habs and Hawks, so my brother said I didn't have a real team cause i didnt stick to one team. So that year, in 83 I stuck with Quebec known as the Noriques, the rivalry wasn't just on the ice but in homes too. With 6 brothers and a father, there were, 2 Leaf fans, 3 hab, 1 Hawk and 1 Bruin fan. I was sad that they move, but with that, I believe they would not trade Roy to Nordiques, for that I got cheer for 3 Cups. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, til this day, I still believe Stantsy was the best franchise player. Stantsy and Hunter were like Gretzky and Messier but with less skill and no Cups

To that all I can say is, remember, this was the bloodiest, hottest rivalry in hockey history by a mile, reflective of a cultural divide in one of Canada’s most important historical regions, and Gary Bettman stripped us of it. One extra layer to this rivalry is that Quebec had two referendums to separate from Canada, one in 1980 (the first year QC was in the NHL) and one in 1995, few months after the move to Colorado. The Canadiens, with the red sweaters and Canada-centric name, were associated with the "remain" movement whereas the blue Nordiques, with their uniforms covered in fleur-de-lys and their tradition of singing the national anthem in French only, where associated with the "yes" movement.

The main difference in 80s and today are the goalies. Goalies back then were smaller men. Had smaller equipment. Relied on quickness and reflexes. Today, Goalies are giants. With huge equipment in comparison and rely on size, positioning and technique. Goalies were much more entertaining back then.

I got a Peter Stastny Nordiques jersey. Even though I am a Knights fan, I love the Nordiques logo, one of the best in NHL history. I wish Quebec had the resources to bring them back and reinstate the rivalry with Montreal that I believe has been largely forgotten nowadays. Bring them back, bring the Whalers back, and bring the North Stars. I know that won’t happen, but that would be so nice to see if it could happen.

These two teams hated each other, it’s almost impossible to understand now forty years later. The 8 games they played during the regular season and then might meet in the playoff were brutal. Bouchard was a big part of the Nordiques win that year, he played great. Also while the Canadiens had great players in the early 80’s they weren’t a true team, they also did not have a good goalie after Dryden left in 1979. Steve Penney was good in 1984 but got hurt and he never manage to become great. Roy in 1985 was finally the goalie they needed but by that time the team was different. They had a great run from 1986 to 1994 but after that it was all downhill

About the frustration about fighting that the commentators. The NHL was still coming out of the brawl filled 70s, where benches would clear out often and stars kept getting hurt. The late 70s and early 80s players and commentators were trying to get it either under control or out of the sport. And there were genuine concerns of the levels of fighting continuing to escalate. 84 the fighting between these two teams really hit a level that was just crazy. Sort of like how now if someone throws a good hit almost 75% chance of a fight (early 2010s were really bad for that), or the staged fights. Get those out of the game. Take the hit, and take a number, no need for a fight there

Quite an impressive rivalry considering its relatively short existence and with a Quebec side so often in the doldrums whilst Montreal remained a true cup contender up until Quebec moved to Colorado.

Well, it's interesting because if, in 1982, it clearly was not the 70's roster anymore, the Canadiens always found ways to stock up and replenish their team (their main error might have been passing over Denis Savard in the draft some time before that). And in the Nordiques' final year (after so many high draft picks...), they sure were the better regular season team--only to fall to Cup champions Rangers and then, the sale was quickly announced😭. Then, during that dreaded fall of 95, Montreal's upper management lost it, putting in charge a GM and head coach, while they were former popular players, with no experience in these roles, then the Red Wings game resulting in the trade demand by Roy and the aftermath... Rumours had it that Roy was shopped by Savard before the season started, but that never materialized. Anyway, the Habs never really have been a powerhouse ever since.

The circus atmosphere around these battles was absolutely insane. There were several papers in in both languages with each one dedicating the first 8-10 pages to le Guerre civile. Not the first ten pages of the sports page, the front section! Sadly the Nords will not exist again any time soon. Too expensive to get back in, new larger rink is needed and so on, and so on.

The Nordiques go to eventually build a powerhouse team that unfortunately became the Avalanche. One of Hockey's ultimate ironies is that Canadian's goalie Patrick Roy became the Avalanche goalie. If the Nordiques were still in Quebec I'm pretty sure that never happens. If it did an actual shooting war might have erupted between Montreal and Quebec.
