Bingo! In the late 90s I was working for TN Dept. of Forestry. During a lunch with two other colleagues, they mentioned the reason the wildfires got so big in CA was because of Environmentalist refusing to allow controlled burns and fire mitigation. Fast forward to 2013, I met someone who actually worked for the Forestry Dept. in CA and she said ANYTHING they tried to do to benefit the environment was met with lawsuits from special interest environmental groups. There's a bunch of ignorant environmentalists that rule everything in CA, add to it the poor management from the politicians.

The Santa Ynez reservoir (that services Pacific Palisaides) was drained about a year ago so the floating cover could be repaired. It wasn't repaired and the reservoir wasn't refilled. Government Newsom did an interview criticizing Trump for "spreading dis/mis information" and said all our reservoirs are full. The interviewer pointed out the Santa Ynez one was not. Newsom angrily retorted that it was why he'd launched an investigation. I don't think you can expect transparency from any politicians in CA.
@vidathomas17711 күн бұрын
Sorry, but you misrepresented what Newsom said in that interview. He told the reporter that "all the state reservoirs" were full, which is correct. The reporter (and possibly some of the viewers) didn't appreciate the import of Newsom saying "state" reservoirs. California has reservoirs that are controlled by the state, and has reservoirs that are controlled locally. That's why Newsom was careful to talk about state reservoirs, the only ones that are under state (and presumably his) control. The reporter then said that the Santa Ynez reservoir wasn't full, and Newsom responded that Santa Ynez is locally controlled. But that as governor he'd launched an investigation the entire mess. Although I live in NorCal, I have dozens of friends and family who live in SoCal, some of whom have lost their homes. The devastation they're experiencing is heartbreaking. Collectively as Californians, we need to do all we can to not only help them now, but address what went wrong. But in order to do that, we ALL have to commit to gathering ALL the facts, not just those that support our understandable desire to find someone at fault whom we can punish. Newsom has plenty of flaws one can point out, we don't need to make s--t up.

@OnlyHuman21411 күн бұрын
@@johnmartinezm Word game? He’s governor. He will always speak from the perspective of STATE resources. He is not responsible for what the local community does. Local ELECTED officials are the FIRST resource in any community of any state, then state, then federal. It’s the way state governments work. BEFORE any local government, homeowners have to start taking their fair share of the blame. California is a high risk area for fires and mud slides after heavy rains (snow in the north). SO many of these homes went up light a match because they were made of wood - just wood - not fire preserved wood. Not brick, not concrete. Look at the ones that survived. There are 5-6 homes encircling surviving homes because they 1 - cleared all trees, hedges, brush from the perimeter of their homes as part of regular maintenance; 2 - cleared all flammable items from their home perimeter’s porches/decks/driveways (wooden furniture, cars, etc.); 3 - dug ditches around the perimeter so that they had - between all three of these - a large fire wall. Look for these on KZbin. There are plenty of builders/contractors out there telling the truth about why some houses survived. Most homeowners just want to blame the insurance companies and the government. Okay then - rebuild and keep everything like you always have - it’ll just burn down again. Climate change is real and denying its role is just plain ignorance. How many more times will we rebuild Florida with our tax dollars before they stop allowing people to rebuild homes and businesses that are not hurricane proof?

Maybe, all that could have contributed but it didn't. You ran out of the house with a box because on Friday when you were warned of risky winds you ignored it. Just like you always did. You neighbors all evacuated and none of you turned off the water or the gas. You left your gasoline and propane tanks at the house. You could have watered down your roofs on Saturday before the winds with water from your pools, but ya didn't. You built your houses right next to each other do you could share the flames. You built fences with wood right up against the house. Did you put fire screen on your vents last winter? No, you did absolutely nothing to protect your home when the alarm went out. You haven't done anything to protect your home ever. Your just exoect someone else to protect you. They can't they are over at the hospital, the school, the rest home and the library. When your house burned, it's plastic pipes bled water because you didn't shut of the water when you left. You waited till Tuesday to prepare to leave even though the notice of bad wind went to everyone the previous Friday.
@pattawney562110 күн бұрын
Nope, I am sorry you lost your house, but the warning of severe winds went out on Friday. Why didn't you have your cars ready to go, your important things ready to move. Why wasn't the water turned off and the gas too. Why didn't you have a plan. Did you have fire mesh on your air vents. No. Instead you waited until fire came for you. Completely unprepared. You live in southern CA. Did you really think the Santa Ana winds weren't dangerous. When you leave your house in a fire and your house burns, it will bleed water. It's not your politicians who are dumb, it's you. Careless and selfish you failed to prepare, plan, or readiness for yourself or your neighborhood. Did any of you have a copy of your firedistricts' emergency plan? Anybody? That's what I thought. Look, I get 70" of rain a year and when we burned in 2020 we made mistakes too. So did folks in the camp fire and in Maui, did amy of your read our fire reports on how we failed so you would get better prepared as individuals and families? No, you didn't. I am sorry. But you didn't listen, we tried to tell you. You didn't listen and now your homes are gone. And next year the people who aren't listening to you will burn and it will ge the same. Blame and the same nothing.

He said he found and set it up He purchased a hose that had a fire retardant tube the heaviest duty hose he could get for less than $100, to hose down the side of the house three sides of my house and basically turned on the water, it arced, puddled, and soaked the roof as well as the sides of the house, protecting it from the flames. He said you could see the arcs of the water literally seeing where the fire stopped and from that point you can look down the hill and see 14 houses beneath him that would have been in that path, So he not only saved his but helped by saving those homes as well. Some were damaged but not nearly as bad as it would have been had his house caught fire.

Another issue that will arise in this tragedy is the fact that people are going into the fire area without proper safety equipment. Didn't we learn anything from September 11th? Many of the homes that burned are over 100 years old there's asbestos in the air. Plus the cars that burned. The fire areas are dangerous in many ways.

The money has NOTHING to do with this. The mismanagement of the forest, the underbrush and the INSANE amount of dry fuels that aren't being removed or controlled means this will happen every year. Defensible space and fire resistant building materials are key. The water supply will NEVER be enough to battle that much fire. I was in the fire service for almost 30 years. The water mains are big but 4 engines with LDH pulling water with 5" lines is more than the system can handle. Now multiply that to 150 engines all pulling water.. it's simple math...

As a junior at USC I wrote a term paper on the California Aqueduct, my minor being Enviornmental Sciences. Having grown up in Marin County I came to LA being pretty liberal, but fiscally conservative. What I learned writing the paper, was there WAS NO THREAT to the Delta Smelt causing any kind of threat to the birds feeding on it. I called so many environmental organizations to do my research and found NO ONE could answer by questions on the Smelt This is when I realized we were being LIED to about a 5-inch fish and the entire state was being controlled through water resources and THIS FISH was being used as an excuse. FYI, this was 30 YEARS AGO. This started my journey to switch parties and am now MAGA. I am still concerned about our environment, but I want and seek TRUTH! These fires could have mitigated on so many levels. This is a complete and TOTAL money grab by the officials in the state of CA. Call me what you want, but I wrote a 45-page paper on this 30+ years ago and found the truth. This is NOT climate change, this is the NON-use of resources and/or being improperly, deliberately, distributed. AND a money grab from Newsom and other officials in CA. They ALL belong in jail.

We have so much water you can't imagine and yet we burned! No ones, not twice but three times in the last four years. Our big fire in 2020 took 2000 homes 330,000 acres. I live in a bloody rain forest and it burned!!! So stop deflecting. The world is on fire. And Maga's are not helping. You idiots told me to rake by forest. So you can just be silent. Truth is complicated and you don't get it. PS we are also low on smelt, which use to run in our Sandy river by the millions. And now don't run hardly at all. But it hasn't impacted our water yet. This disaster was preventable!! If the people in charge were not incompetent, then this could have been prevented !! If the mayor increased the budget for the fire department, hired fire chiefs who are competent, allocating money for controlled brush burning ,better fire fighting training ,allocating money to repair the reservoir and doing it in a timely manner ,repairing and making sure the fire hydrants worked ,and instead of using ideologies in hiring, you use meritocracy and bring on more qualified fire fighters ,allocating the funding to the repair and maintenance of fire trucks and ambulances, keeping a solid crew of mechanics on hand !! Even go so far as to increase resources to high-risk areas before the warnings would help too !! Having competent people at the top would have lessened the risk greatly, and the loss of life would be minimal !! LA needs a competent mayor ,who can lead by example ,LA needs top fire chiefs who are battle tested and have been in the department a minimum of 25 years ,the other fire fighters all should be hired by meritocracy whether they are men or women with stricter guidelines, the LA water and power company needs a competent leader who attends to the water issues ,the fire hydrants and making certain there is plenty of water to fight fires !! LA leadership has failed in all these areas and now must reap what they sew !!

I see a pattern with the far right to shame blame the victims and call them loons for acting like climate change is real to distract them from demanding accountability from themselves and their destructive agenda being part of the cause as they demand resignations from leadership to get the spotlight off of climate change or the fossil fuel agenda like DeSantis or House speaker Johnson or Trump, act like all is unavoidable like even in 100mph winds, the fire could be avoided if underbrush was cleared despite fire flying far distances like a flame thrower propelled by warm like blow dryer Santa Anna 100mph winds over barriers like walls, roads, or multiple lane traffic…. but I myself would want a concrete wall and keep the plant life back to not give it time to set my house on fire. I used to think that if those into fossil fuels believed, they’d stop, but some article wrote about the irony that Trump a denier might be excited about climate change for the change in Greenland to mine it so I think they’ll just no matter what, continue on denying it in caring more for the oppurtunities at everyone’s expense and victim blame them for not avoiding every disaster to adapt to climate change driven changes. They want accountability on other problems that exasperated it like the water, the brush, number of personnel, but not on what made the winter dry or it the hottest summer on record.

This is allowed because some things have to have immediate action. The water supply would be one of those things. They just have to document the file to explain the risk. So to delay because of the paperwork process is inexcusable.

Janisse Quinones is the Los Angeles Water Chief. Her salary is $750,000 a year, twice what her predecessor's salary was. She was also given $30k to relocate and $45k six months housing allowance. The articles I've read all focus on her reaching 100% clean energy goals by 2035 and nothing about the safety of the city. Priorities...

According to the WGN and ABC Chicago news stations, (I'm in the Chicago area), the one closed for repair holds 117 million gallons! The firefighters were able to utilize only 3 - one million containers, and that's how it ran out, it is horrible that reservoir was empty. 😮

It’s been empty for a year. The repair was for a cover to keep debris out. The reservoir didn’t need repairs. She should be fired . She’s a hire from the mayor who doubled her salary to 750,000 a year and from Puerto Rico where the city paid also for her relocating.

I’m so sorry to hear you are in the middle of this. I can empathize, I lost my house in Santa Rosa. Within 4 hours from the start, our house was gone. It was the high winds in our case, the flying embers. I have many stories from the neighbors and friends. I talked to the firefighters that worked our area. There was just no stopping it at the time. They cut breaks and ran, cut breaks and ran.

I’m so sorry you lost your home🤍 my Grandma lost her house in that fire too. She only made it out (living alone) because the high winds were scaring her. Like you said, within a couple of hours it was gone.

Dr. Bialik, thank you and your colleagues for this! We (being out of CA, living thousands of miles away) cannot imagine how this affects all of you, because we aren’t living it. It is so important to talk about ALL of this! As you said…it is beyond heartbreaking! You mentioned your kids and I want to know how all of the kids are feeling? I pray for everyone impacted…I’ve been a mom for 40 years and my thoughts always turn to the children. It feels like all of you are living through the worst nightmare a child could imagine…big hugs from all of us who can’t be there to wrap our arms around all of you. New context of life, indeed! Stay safe and God bless you and everyone impacted! It feels reminiscent of my feelings during Katrina…I should be driving there with cases of water and diapers! Unconditional love to all of you ❤️😢

Every CO2 reduction measure enacted in CA was wiped out by these fires.
