I have the 2016 batch and within a half hour you can barely smell it, for the price it’s not a bargain, projection is almost nil, he’s probably one of the most informative scent guys out there, no bs, just fact, and honest opinion. He’s my go to on fragrance, best on KZbin.

Do you think that perhaps part of the reason that the new La Nuit batches aren’t as dark, rich, and ehmmm “cardamom-y” is due to the age of the bottle? I’ve noticed with my other scents that as the bottle ages, they tend to smell a bit stronger, and darker. The citrus notes tend to die down a bit and the darker notes such as vanilla, Tonka, and maybe even cardamom will become a little bit more pronounced.

If the bottle was stored correctly then you shouldn't have any performance issues due to the age. If it was stored improperly (in high heat or direct sunlight for example) then you could have issues.

Great video Ashton! I also read the article on Raiders of the Lost Scent before buying my bottle. Found the first reformulation but my bottle is from 2014. Will give it a wear tomorrow to see how it performs. Always wanted to buy this scent but didn't want to spend so much on the current reformulation. Great video Ashton, I love la nuit de L'homme, I bought a 2 oz. bottle of the original formula and only bust that out at special occasions, then I found the collectors edition at notion and I ordered 2 bottles of it so I wouldn't run through my vintage. On my skin I get about 6-8 hours of longevity on this, which I'm very pleased about. The new formulation I get about 3-4, so I'm very happy to have 2 bottles of the collectors edition. Also after watching a video Fragboy Stewie did, I picked up a bottle of Lanvin Avant-garde and that smells strikingly similar to La nuit de L'homme. I get about 6 hrs longevity on that also. It's a great cheapie as well.

I get what you're saying about the formula codes, but there is undoubtedly a difference in my 2 bottles of La Nuit. My first bottle is a 2011 that I use very sparingly now, and I got a bottle of this collector's edition (dated July 2014) hoping that it would be the same formula without the crazy vintage prices. My collectors edition bottle smells way different than the 2011, and performance is much weaker. I'm not gravely disappointed because it's still good enough to warrant the $40 I spent on it, but that 2011 bottle is goddamn magic. I tend to agree with the notion that bottles from 2013 and earlier are of a significantly higher quality of scent and performance, no matter what the formula codes say.

While I'm not certain of this, one possible explanation is that the $40 bottle you bought at a discounter was not stored properly. It's very possible that's why it ended up at a discounter in the 1st place, there are restrictions and QC for fragrances you buy at Nordstrom that just aren't in place at discounters. Its a crap shoot what you're getting.

Raiders of the Lost Scent has the best on Serge Luten's history. Very easy to follow. So I just ordered Dior Fahrenheit 32 *2007* from Notino. Is this the same type of thing as the collectors Edition of La Nuit ? Oh, 38L402 ,April 2014. I got one of those deals from Macy's,remember Macy's , where you got a free 1.7 bottle with a purchase the 3.4 oz. Still got some of the 1.7 and haven't even cracked the 3.4 .I'm set for awhile. The difference is pretty major to me. I didn't believe the hype myself when I first heard about it, but that's before I even knew that my bottle was actually a 2011 (I bought it in early 2015 for $40). That's the point where I bought a 2014 bottle just out of curiosity, and it was way different. There's other fragrances that can occupy the role, so don't think of it as a must-have. Or you can buy a decant from a trusted source, like one of the Facebook groups, so you can find out for yourself.

Explained in the video, Yves Saint Laurent prints their formula codes on each box. You can tell there has been a reformulation when they start using a new formulation code. You can check out the Raiders of the Lost Scent link in the description for more info. Color changes don't necessarily mean that the formulation of the scent itself has changed and that throws a lot of people off.

The new formulations hold nothing to this 2014 edition. I’ve tried La Nuit from multiple department stores and it’s synthetically boring. The collectors edition is so much warmer, complex, original and could easily be a signature scent. Lack of richness and character is exactly what’s missing in the latest formulation. Like they tried to make it smell like everything else, a bit safer. In love with the 2012-15 formulation, can’t imagine what the original must be like. Would be cool if Parfum Vintage did a take on the original.

After watching this vide I have gone ahead and purchased the Edition art version of la nuit, before I share my opinion on this with you I would like to share my background experience with la nuit so far. I own a 2012 bottle (1st reformulation), which I occasionally use, and even though some of the top notes smell a little off it still has most of the scent, which is still very potent. Prior to purchasing the Art edition I managed to get my hands on a unopened/used 2012 bottle which in the end I ended up returning as it seemed very alcoholy compared to my other bottle. As with the Art edition bottle this is definitely the same formula and also has the same formula code (as explained in the video), HOWEVER this batch of the scent is most definitely weaker and less potent. This has less than half the longevity and potency as any of the older batches, it seems like YSL gathered all the remaining amounts of the formula, further diluted it to produce more juice and then sold as many as possible. As well as testing it one my skin I have tested the Art edition and my 2012 juice on paper, and you can see that the Art edition juice evaporates much quicker, which to me means that there is less oil in the juice. In all honesty I would say save your money and let go of this wonderful scent, it’s a shame however we as consumers shouldn’t have to pay silly money to try and keep hold of something which no longer exists, if you really want it I would suggest you purchase decant samples from Ebay of older batches. I have ordered an decant of the 1st ever formula which I am looking forward to smell. Edition Art formula code - 38KD01 (Dec 2013)

The 2016 reformulation of La Nuit de L'Homme is the worst I've ever experienced in a fragrance. To think I spent over £60 on it, as I wanted to experience the beauty I had known in past years. Terrible! That money could have got me a Cartier Declaration or a good Issey Miyake. Discarded it after 3 sprays as it lasted less than 30 minutes on me, so annoyed anytime I see it in shops...
