"Team Fortress was originally a Half-Life mod" TF was originally a mod for the original Quake, then later QuakeWorld. The team behind it (TF Software Pty. Ltd.) was even working on a standalone game that would have been called "Team Fortress 2", when they were hired by Valve to develop it as a mod for Half-Life. That came out in 1999. In 2000, with the Half-Life 1.1 update, Team Fortress 1.5 was released as a standalone product (first time it wasn't just a mod). Then in 2007 they came out with TF2. The GoldSrc engine version is known as Team Fortress Classic these days, I'm not sure when that naming convention started. Maybe around the time TF2 came out?
@gcpadmin1024
@gcpadmin1024 2 жыл бұрын
Team fortress classic was around in the early 2000's way before even the idea of valve TF2 which is based on the HL2 engine. I'm not sure if the original Team Fortress was developed on the HL1 engine or another gaming engine but the Team Fortress classic game certainly appeared to run on the HL1 engine, as did the original CS, I also remember the proposal of the TF2 before valve got ahold of it, the design appeared to be based more on a CS model than the classic model that was already released, I remember this very clearly as I was hugely disappointed, I do remember when TF2 was released in the early days that I was disappointed with some of the changes made to the gameplay like the removal of grenades from all characters and the zoom to charge sniper rifle rather than hold click to charge. I also prefered CSS based on the HL2 engine rather than CSGO and even with CSGO the early release was way better than the current iteration, although it's still payable.

It's funny, the car thing where the wife asks the questions and the dealer just talks to the guy instead. Happened to a friend of mine who knows and cares nothing for cars, with the wife being far more knowledgeable about it. Every time they'd reply to him or tell only him about this and that thing and it wound up biting the dealer in the ass because the guy would just be indifferent and they wound up getting a much better deal because the dealer was worried about losing the sale.

It's funny where stuff like this happens. A co-worker complained about a doctor/nurse/midwife at the local OB clinic doing exactly the opposite when they were having their youngest child: he'd ask a question, and the person would direct all answers to his wife as though he didn't even exist.

Regarding the floor damage: Many moons ago I bought a fixer-upper house for $27 and a taco. In one area the hardwood floor was badly scratched by a previous occupant's horse-sized dog. I asked my flooring contractor for a quote to replace it. She laid out a bunch of reasons why it would be difficult and unusually expensive to fix, strongly intimating that she did not want the job. She concluded by strongly recommending that instead I deploy an R.U.G. system. I asked what that was and who sells it. She said it's a rug. Put down a rug and it'll look great. I'm going to have to agree with this. I was probably the last gen that had to use paper maps for navigation (and a compass came handy) and it was genuinely awful. Bus tracking (that sometimes not even remotely actually includes tracking and is pretty often just a wild guess) is seriously what you use as an example for the huge changes thanks to GPS? Regarding the lab: nothing gives me more tech anxiety than reading a review of a product covered over 6 months ago, or has had a slight nomenclature change. Hopefully the lab will run tests more frequently and with a way of adding in minor changes (even with batch differences where a component change was made and the manufacturer does not make widely known - like to help their supply chain issues). Looking forwards to this new channel(s).

Oh ffs, brings back a story from the early 2000 where some network card had a revision made to one of their ICs, but kept the *exact same* name for it. So you wonder why your driver for it suddenly goofs up with a new card you just bought, you carefully compare every single chip on both cards, so only after sleeping over the issue for a week or so you even start to consider that being a possibility. Like "nobody would ever change a chip and not even add an -A suffix to the type name, right?"

@@chunye215 Check GN's PSU testing; particularly the exploding Gigabyte PSUs. There's _three_ different component vendors with the same model #. I also experienced this! The model of RAM I own and currently use is not QVL for my motherboard. I didn't know because my revision had Samsung memory. Then I RMA'd the modules. I got back Micron and Hynix versions (the first shipment was crushed) and neither worked even at stock settings. Others in the same model # range _are_ QVL which made it even more confusing. I'm aware that's technically not the same thing as an IC revision but the problems it creates are similar.

I work on business jets for a living and i usually use Snap-On tools. I am very excited to preorder one of the black/orange screwdrivers as soon as I’m able. One of the other things i really like about the screwdriver happens to be the style of bits it will come with. Aircraft have lots of small areas to work in and as you could imagine lots of space constrained screws. I have several “standard” bits that ive had to cut to fit into such areas. The small form factor bits are a big plus for me and that price point for the bit kits is more than fair especially when some bits that grace my tool box are 8.99 each.

One thought on the electric versus manual screwdriver, it's not always about speed. Sometimes it's about physical capability. I have terrible arthritis in my hands but still like building PCs and working on cars, so anything that allows me to do the least manual twisting and turning is a godsend. On the other topic about people criticizing you ("How much of my money did you spend on this???" or "Don't have video editors move your furniture if you don't want damaged floors"), I've lately noticed that there are a group of people out there who really want nothing more than to try to tear you down. Whether they think of it as sport, or they have a grudge against you, or have no life, or are jealous of the success you've had, I have no idea. I've seen plenty of people out there who immediately assume the worst (or flat out fabricate the worst) when it comes to your actions and motivations. No doubt it probably sucks to read those kinds of comments about yourself, but I do think that the more you address their faux "concerns" the more energized they become.

He can however only test certain things. A 90$ tool should be fine after 10 years under normal conditions. Getting wet sometimes, drying again, encountering different types of dust or other particles and fluids. You could do sped up aging tests but I doubt he can do that. That's one reason why experience is something that is really valuable. You know how other brands and their materials age. You have no idea how the ltt one will behave in 1 year, let alone 3 or 5.

It doesn't matter how good the driver is, it's being sold to people who have no need for a $90 screwdriver. It's the shiny holographic charzard of screwdrivers. Remember Apple/nvidia/Intel/AMD or any other Corp are not your friends, And that comes from the mouth of Linus. Referring to the _contiguous_ ("touching/sharing a common border") states as the "continental US" is technically correct but ambiguous given the more common use of the term and the fact that these states are still on the same geological continent as the "non-continental" Alaska.

Luke, I lost two parrots (one of which I'd had about 20 years) to "smoke inhalation" a few years back. They both went within minutes of each other on the same day. It was the oven, more specifically damaged Teflon (non stick stuff). I would double check you don't have any Teflon products used anywhere near birds. Even just burning-in a new oven/grill will mess them up. Also, anecdotally, my parents smoked indoors for years and it never had any affect on them, which makes me doubt it would be people outside the apartment smoking that would hurt them. It could be, of course, but be wary of other things is what I'm trying to say. Hopefully your birds recover!

The bird story made me remember our birds as kids. We had these awesome budgies that were so nice and happy and would fly around our place and sit on our shoulders. One day we realised they were getting out by lifting the cage door, so tied them down with those plastic/wire twines. Needless to say they started eating the twine to remove it and the plastic killed them. Was so sad. The only bird that survived was lucky our Cockatiel.

52:25 - there's just a lot more inherent risks to buying used mining gpus. Like I got one that I thought would be safe, it is the gigabyte water Force 6900 xt. It has the built-in water block, you think that would repel miners? No. I got one that what they did is they took the block off, flash the bios, put on an air cooler, mined on it, put the block back on, and sold it as new - open box. Thankfully at least they activated the warranty so I was able to send it to gigabyte and they have fixed it. They didn't have to I mean it was secondhand, and mined on, so I'll give them credit for that. It would not play full screen applications, and I knew the BIOS got tampered with because I tried flashing the one off of the website and it said there was a size mismatch, even though the BIOS was exactly the same, so it would not flash. And there is no selector switch so I couldn't just flash it from another bios.

You could even use a circular saw, set the depth stopper to -.5mm of the board thickness, use masking tape to protect the surface of the laid boards, and cut just in from the edge. Once the center is out you should be able to un-latch what's left and yeet it out leaving a perfect edge. You will need to cut the tongue sides of the tongue-and-groove off of the fitting board carefully mind...a lot of that composite/ply splinters further in than you'd think.

My mentality was to do whatever possible for the customer, since I realised that the isp only cared if the customer stayed in some way. So they want to cancel out tv and stuff, I would process it within 2 min. Cancelation of a contract due to a move, no problem, 5 min and we done. Not because I don’t believe they mean it, but because no matter how badly they want to release something, there’s pretty strong precedence for such plans being overruled by some new, exciting project that also will probably never see the light of day (unless it gets picked back up and restarted so many times it eventually sees completion 10-15 years down the line).

On the Vesa Certification, one thing they can do is once they have a full suite of ratings for the Different aspects you look at for a TV, so like HDR, Clarity, Responsiveness, etc. then what you do is put the device in the Default (Manufacturer recommended) settings and that is what ALL the ratings are determined by instead of letting them optimize for HDR at the expense of something else and get a Peak HDR rating.

Better still vesa puts out a setup standard so you can automate testing over all screens then you can test over the whole range automatically. If your using high speed cameras and the settings can be applied quickly you could test every senario of config including controling the panel at a low level in a few minutes. And then we can all mess about with customising our own settings or build our own external controllers like driving it / set settings from the driving device. We can dreams.

Are there possibly cheaper options for the equipment? maybe but isn't it better to have equipment that goes further than needed than getting the cheaper (but still expensive equipment) knowing that the data might be incomplete even though the missing data probably doesn't matter The better the info we all have the better value we can all get for our money, letting us buy the best product for our budget with the features that matter most to us. So I can answer the starlink question for Australian gamers not living in the major cities. It depends what games you are playing and their netcode, Monster hunter for example is exceptionally good experience but that is also because their netcode system is far and away better then most multiplayer games I would argue being that it is mostly driven by client side processing and then damage numbers is shared between players rather then on point positioning. While say a fighting game that demands on point miliseconds button inputs for example the new release MultiVeruses is going to be a horrible experience as their netcode would be on par with say Smash, or I would argue even worse than Smash. In the end I would say for multiplayer games, do a test see how it impacts your latency, if you can trial it for free you should go that route instead. it's also going to be very dependant on which place in the world you are trying to connect to, if it's regional it's absolutely a good experience, Multinational... depends where your trying to connect to, some places in america it's completely fine, specifically the west coast, the further east you go for connection, the worse it will get. Connecting to Cali servers I have gotten 120 - 140 ping connections which is perfectly playable for most games. If you are trying to connect to european servers all I can say is good luck. People theorise that as starlink improves that it will direct connections to the major hubs in the world specifically the cities then piggyback connections from there but we will have to see. What it does currently is it directs communications to the nearest hub from the user then piggyback off the connection there. For Australians that appears to be Sydney I have had a friend in the industry who did some tests out of mostly curriousity and they have found that it connects to the nearest communications hub which will be whatever your major nearest city is.

@@grn1 Indeed it's not fully connected system at this current time. I believe the intention is to get the network fully set up by 2023 possibly, but Starlink has made really no mention about what the ETA is for long distance connections. Regardless when it does happen the piggyback network is what we will be expecting, being that it'll connect whatever the closest hub is to the endpoint then carry the connection from there.

I think, in regards to the new clarity rating system, they should give two scores. One being a score with no special features turned on and then one with everything the display can do to improve the clarity turned on. A standard score and an optimized score.
@kyleduddleston4123
@kyleduddleston4123 2 жыл бұрын
@Michael Coelho My point is that there would be two scores and it should be obvious in the naming as to which score is with and without special features. If a manufacturer chooses to leave out the lesser score then as a consumer, you should be suspicious of that omission. If only the barebones score is listed, you have no idea just how good your viewing experience could be with that product, only that it can't be worse than a certain point. I don't care about the bare minimum that a TV can achieve, only the best. However, if the barebones score is extremely low, it would indicate that the optimized score could be misleading. Neither one by itself is great, but both scores together could be a quick indicator for good and bad displays for your use case. The rating graphic should probably be made to where it would look stupid to not have both scores displayed.

I honestly like your guy's thumbnails and titles. They are catchy and witty most of the time, and definitely catch my eye and get me interested in what the video is about. It also helps that you guys don't do blatant click bait imo, where the title says something that isn't in the video at all. That type of click bait is really annoying, but In my opinion, I think LTT does a good job of walking that line of creating an interesting thumbnail and title, while keeping the content true to what the title says.

I will say, old people do often love paying more for worse service, because they are absolutely convinced any new offer is just a scam. When I worked for AT&T I'd deal with old people every day that had grandfathered internet and phone plans that were almost always slower and more expensive than new offers, but the idea of losing a plan that's no longer offered was just too much for some people.

On Clickbait, I'm a weird KZbin viewer apparently, because when I see a Click-baity title, I usually steer away from the content. I am drawn to titles present information that I find interesting. So for the sound testing equipment "The most expensive thing I've ever bought" has no information. At all. If it were named "This Power Suppoly Testing Rig costs $130k", I would be like "huh, why?" and click. But that's why my first piece of content that I almost always listen to is the WAN show, because you'll discuss what's actually in your videos and from there, I try to find the ones I want to watch. You mentioned a video about the Robot you have for keyboard testing - sounds super cool and I want to find out more. I assume it's on Short Circuit or something, because nothing on the main channel seems even remotely related to that. Maybe it's hidden behind a clickbait title? Either way, I can't find your good content with these algorithm-chasing titles. But you guys gotta do what you gotta do to run a business. You've got like 100 employees, so I see your perspective. Just sharing mine.

1:39:28 Luke, it's a common misnomer. "Cont. US" stands for contiguous, meaning the part of the United States that is connected to the rest of the United States. Like many things in English, people just assume the wrong word and no one actually knows what it means anymore but there you go. That's why Alaska and Hawaii are not included.

What’s wrong with “LTT Labs” for name branding? Isn’t that what you’ve been calling it? And I personally like the pluralization- I see the original meaning as a room for a specific study, a chemistry lab, a physics lab, a biology lab, an astronomy lab. LTT Labs is multiple labs and each area should be named as such- a sound lab, a material lab, an RF lab, etc.
@CapnSlipp
@CapnSlipp 2 жыл бұрын
As for a logo, I’d take the LTT Circle design and refit it into a beaker outline, with the word “LABS” underneath. That may sound corny and obvious, but it both has that retro-modern iconography that’s slightly video-gamey (e.g. all the long-standing iconography of video games like potion bottle shape, hearts for life, medpack design) while also looking somewhat like a boring laboratory company (which also means serious, down-to-earth, reputable). But I don’t do graphic design or branding for a living, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

He's said in the past that he wants to get away from having the company's name and branding revolve around him. Even before that happens he wants the company to be more about the team than the individual.

@@grn1 I think that’s so stupid (and a bit narcissistic). The branding has always been Linus Tech Tips / LTT, and renaming or going for a far derivation is stupid at this point. 3M was originally Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing, but now 3M officially doesn’t stand for anything (since they aren’t in mining anymore)- it’s not like they tried to change the company name to MPM (Minnesota Product Manufacturing) or IMM (International Manufacturing & Media), they just stuck with 3M because that’s what people know. If Linus died, the brand would still be fine as LTT; it doesn’t matter that the L stands for Linus. And honestly, his great creative staff could have some fun with it and have somebody who kind of sounds like Linus appear from time to time with a big white beard as “Old Man Linus” (mostly as a joke character not the main presenter). Or they could pull a Where’s Waldo and have Riley, James, and others occasionally show up in a Linus mask as “tall Linus” or “big Linus” or “mustache Linus”. In terms of company & branding, it really doesn’t matter that the L stands for Linus, and it’s narcissistic of Linus to think that the company couldn’t continue, or new ventures couldn’t survive if it’s named LTT but there’s no Linus. That’s not how brand psychology works- there are absolutely zero unhappy customers who bought an Apple iPhone expecting to get fresh produce. That’s just not how things work.
@grn1
@grn1 2 жыл бұрын
@@CapnSlipp I don't think he's being narcissistic to think the company may not survive at this point without him. There's a good reason for that fear, he is the face of the company. He has said that LTT may remain LTT and just not stand for anything but moving forward he wants to continue to separate himself from the branding and continue bringing other presenters in so that there is no main presenter. He also said that he wants labs in particular to be a separate entity. While the lab is part of the same umbrella company and all of the companies support each other he also wants to lab to be free to be it's own thing. The way KZbin (and similar sites/services) work, creators tend to get punished if they deviate too much which is why they have so many different channels. At the end of the day it may just be that he thinks about this stuff differently than you do but it's also important to consider that he does have a medium sized, multi-million dollar company and he didn't get this far without knowing a thing or two about business and psychology.

In the US, Telephone Companies and ISPs have to have an Opt-In/Opt-Out Policy. Everyone is In when you sign up, and when new services, upgrades, or other offers are available, you get contacted about the new services. Those who Opt-Out, have to renew their Opt-Out every two years. However, when dealing with the "Out" people, they get really upset when they discover that faster speeds or new tech is available and they weren't informed. And it takes several people explaining that they made the choice, to get them to understand. This is usually after they post all over social media about how the company doesn't care about current customers.

Linus, in the US, we’re seeing a lot of billionaire business owners squeezing us regular folk with artificial inflation on top of regular inflation. The billionaires keep making more money than ever while even conservative investments like retirement accounts are bleeding out. Things keep getting more and more expensive and we’re running out of savings. So a lot of people see someone rich like you and just automatically hate any showing of wealth given the current recession and the redistribution of wealth happening right now to the top 1% making them by far richer than ever.
