Glad you're better, Sean. An interesting video again. How great the Belties did. I wonder where the Coccy comes from!

Well seven. Thank you, apparently it's a single sell organism that lives in the ground. One of many. My issue is why she are there becoming so susceptible to it. I think selective breeding and hardiness will get us through eventually. The Galloways once again showed there resilience. The wet year I'd also say is a factor and the mild winter 🤔

I noticed a management change some time last spring, it seemed like you started taking more forage and putting more pressure on the cattle than you had previously. About that time, and throughout the season i noticed you were reporting more sickness. Before you were leaving grass longer and the clipping the rushes, that seemed to be keeping the cattle in better health, and there performance was better. I believe the beltys will be the breed that will work for you in this system. Culling anything that needs dosing will be a tough move, but will push your herd closer to what you are wanting. The sickly ones are telling you they dont belong in your system. Keep going and trying new things, have a great day!

Welcome back Seán. You were indeed very busy. That coccidiosis can fly through calves. Somebody was watching over you and your herd. It's a rotten thing and could have destroyed the calves. Motherless May and the galloways were the toughest. Delighted you got through it. Look after yourself. Thank you for the update

Thank you Marie. Once again the belties are showing there worth. A fascinating thing tbh. Really excited about the two Ruby hiefers. They'll be the backbone of the herd in years to come please God. 🙌

A lot of great information in this video Sean , sounds like you are on to something there regarding dosing the cow effecting the colostrum . Makes sense . You are showing us the good and the bad and everything in between, can’t be easy so hats off to you . The Galloways keep on proving themselves. Except for Beags personality issues 👍🏻👋🏻

I think that they when you had them locked up tight during the wet spring it could have increased your infection levels. They may have had sub clinical signs as you had some white scour earlier. As they got older all it took was a change in the weather , cold wet days could make them succumb to coccidiosis. They have responded well to treatment. It's the same challenges with indoor calving as outdoor, you probably had a lot less contamination as your calves had more room outside. The weather is the king all the time.

Sean, glad to have you back. You need to look after yourself. It’s great that you’ve sold some of the animals at home, the cash flow must be very welcome. From a herd point of view, it’s also great that now you have some heifers coming through, you can start making qualitative choices about what cows to keep and what to sell. You seem to struggle a bit with the goodbyes, understandably, but it’s a vital step in improving your core stock and generating some income. You’ve come a long way, I really admire what you are doing 🇮🇪🇸🇬

Thank you Peter and your support is much appreciated. I've made mistakes and lost money. One is definitely my heart over head when making sale choices. I feel we are getting closer every year to the right mothers. Really excited about the two Ruby hiefers. Once again they have shown there tolerance for adversity.

Good man, Seáinín. I'm glad your calves got over that bout. A thing like that can rip through and cause a lot of loss. It does go to show, your Galloways are passing all the tests. It would take something awful to knock them.

Haha thank you Mr onion. Yes I'm very excited about the Ruby Galloway hiefers. I thought I was close to the right mother till I had them to look at. I'm very pleased to be in a position to sell less adapted stock from now on. And even our bull this year may not look amazing yet but we now know the hardiness is there and a live calf trumps all🙌

I would put it down to the cow in some way too and a bit of bad luck maybe. The poorest calves from last year, either their mother or their calves or both gave trouble this year. Some have left, some have gotten another chance. Best calves from last year are thriving as are their mothers and new calves

Great video and thanks for the update - I didn't think cocci would take her so fast but I think you're right about her mum leaving her wide open to it and other infections to exacerbate it. Going against the grain I'd be giving her mum one last chance given you know to watch for cocci next year, she has such beautiful babies

Hi Magpye thank you. I understand exactly. And it's actually her calf from last year Iat the start of the video I was admiring.. The black and white bullock. I'll let her hang on for the year and see how she gets on. The funny thing is she is out of a very "good" Ai bull. But the more I think of it. All them bulls are pampered to the last mealed dosed housed shampoo and hair dryers. No hardiness in them at all but a product of there conditions. Just my opinion 🤔

Belties are fine cattle and they make sense but you can't sell them in the ring. Not down south anyway. Wonder would you be better selling a HEX calf or a AAX calf in the ring ?

You may have introduced the "bug" from the weak cow and calf that had their microbiome messed up with the antibiotics. You definitely got to see which animals are strongest. The benefit of your system is the daily viewing of the animals and paying attention to their manure. You saved yourself the loss of 2 calves for sure this time around.

Well Lee I think so. Also I'm hearing the wet year. The vets tell me a lot of calves died this year around. My view on that is my calves should be able for it.. The shorthorns are apparently not. I guess I needed to that the hit to see were the hardiness was also🤔

Pushing to calve at 24 to 26 months is a joke alright. Do it when she's ready. I don't think myself they'd need 2 years tbh but some definitely do like maverick. you never know either, maverick or those bulled at around 2 years could live on longer and give great calves every year. At that point the wait was worth it
