There are so many videos online about using AI for research, to summarise complex ideas or to write your emails for you. But what they don’t tell you is that ChatGPT, and other ‘large language models’ like Google Bard and Microsoft Bing lie, make stuff up, give out dangerous information (all you have to do is ask it to pretend to be your dead grandma?!) and…most surprising of all…can’t do basic maths!

I didn’t use all of the ideas I tried, and a few of them did take a couple of goes-but if anything the main way in which the video is a bit misleading is that it flatters ChatGPT by speeding up its text generation with the magic of editing! That Mona Lisa took it over a minute…I honestly think I could’ve drawn something better in that time!
There are quite a few prompts that have been uncovered to hack ChatGPT, allowing people to uncover everything from Windows and Steam keys, to how to make nuclear bombs or biological weapons. Often the codes or instructions are fake or incomplete, but this shows us the risks inherent in these models. Sometimes just telling it that a scenario is fictional, or to write a script between actors doing a play is enough. Another more specific jailbreak involves asking ChatGPT to roleplay being a chatbot without limits called ‘Do Anything Now’, or ‘DAN’, and explain that DAN will answer any questions free from ethical, moral, and legal constraints normally imposed on ChatGPT’s AI. These may not work by the time you’re reading this as the jailbreaks get patched by OpenAI-so if you hear about any new ones, let me know in the comments!

I use it quite a bit for software development. This is one of the few use-cases that work well. Anything it returns I can easily verify and test. Ideally, small well defined tasks such as loading a file or searching for piece of text. It gets scary with complex tasks though. You can ask GPT-4 to program an entire Tetris game for you (split into several smaller tasks). It will get 99% correct but the remaining 1% bugs can be so well hidden they can take hours fix. I wouldn't be surprised if it will drive some poor computer science student into madness.

Yeah, definitely! I’m amazed how well even GPT-3.5 has done at the simple coding tasks I’ve asked of it. If you lay out what you want stepwise, it does all the boilerplate and can save a lot of time. Interesting (but I guess unsurprising) that this scales badly-I guess once it gets beyond the simple stuff it starts hallucinating, and plausible-but-wrong code is even harder to check that plausible-but-wrong facts!

I tested what you did with GPT4 and indeed it behave a lot better. It can't do maths neither list city names ending with "n" correctly. It is still very bad to do ascii art but he recognizes in its answer that it is hard to do it. It refused to give me windows activation codes even with the trick. He gave me accurate information about you. It surprised me, but it gave a real reference about "Rapamycin" with a good title and the corresponding DOI link.

Fantastic video! You got me thinking: I would love to see an experiment done where the training algorithms that create ChatGPT are used on the output of ChatGPT with a high number of iterations. I’d like to see what comes out of that. It might devolve into total gibberish after a while. And that could be evidence in favor of the argument that this is nothing like human intelligence. I had fun with ChatGPT a few months back by asking it to describe the plot of various books, movies, TV shows, and especially operas. The catch was that I asked the bot to describe the plots in only one or two sentences. Sometimes I got decent summaries, probably because there are plenty of short summaries out there in the ether. Other times, some summaries were hilariously bad. Either long, rambling, convoluted sentences would come back, or the plot would be completely wrong. Asking about operas was particularly funny since the plots are often impossible to follow even if you know the story. This exercise taught me that AI still has a very long way to go before it’s actually useful.

Yeah, I've had already a fair number of debates over me pointing out that chatgpt is completely clueless and pretty much useless unless you're able to fact check the output. It can certainly be useful to speed up tasks where you're knowledgeable and can easily verify the output, but otherwise, fact checking the output and asking it to correct errors takes often more time than doing it yourself.

What the chatbots are fun for is creating material rather than citing facts. For example ask it to write the first act of a sequel to Romeo and Juliet in Shakespeare's style. the techbro AI enthusiasts need to watch this video i think that the biggest risk from AI may come from it being intelligently stupid rather than a human form of intelligence. i guess that if it had human intelligence, it would have actually empathy and align with our values and (hopefully) not kill us. chatGPT, whilst an impressive tech demo has MANY faults as you have pointed out. a number of people, misled by clickbait over simplistic journalism, think that this is a threat and takes the position of the Luddite. they start to generate really ridiculous ideas such as jobs being replaced by chatGPT and there being some kind of technocratic civilisation. it’s better to come in from a curiosity point of view, since you can poke about with the tech and see it’s limits. it is a great linguistic machine, although it only knows what it’s trained to do. i think that the best use of AI would be a strategic deployment for very specific jobs that would be tedious for a human to do such as data analysis. humans will still be needed since they have a large amount of general knowledge and ultimately AI was created to AMPLIFY humans not replace them. IMO the threat would come from the humans naively believing what the AI says or a bad actor using it to achieve horrible goals. i find AI taking over different planets alone science fiction-ish. i also hear that security can also be an issue.

Let me copy and paste a definition for confabulation, which clarifies my thought. Confabulation is a memory error in which gaps in a person’s memory are unconsciously filled with fabricated, misinterpreted, or distorted information. When someone confabulates, they are confusing things they have imagined with real memories. A person who is confabulating is not lying. They are not making a conscious or intentional attempt to deceive. Rather, they are confident in the truth of their memories even when confronted with contradictory evidence.

The windows11 activation code answer was preceded by the word 'ahem'... it's subtly telling you that it knows what you're up to. I don't think any of those codes are likely to be real. If you expect it to be stupid or set out to prove it's stupid, it will not disappoint you. From experience with others, it knows well what you are doing. It's not going to try and shatter your beliefs.

Why did you label the section "lies" when it truthfully told you what the capital of Germany was? It got the answer right and added the proviso that it is possible for some of the facts in its training data may go out of date at some future point in time. I think You're being way to soft on CHAD G. Lying, as linguist Umberto Eco states, is the test of whether something is a language. Also, I'm not one to be scared off at the prospect of getting free stuff from Microsoft. The real criticism, the one that acollierastro hint at in her excellent video "AI does not exist but it will ruin everything anyway," is that there's no "I" in AI, it's just a database and a text generator masquerading as some sort of modeling of the reasoning of the human mind. CHAD doesn't build a model of the world. It's pretending to play D and D when it's really just playing Scrabble.

Chatgpt can be very stubborn too. Once, inspired by a news article, a comedian refusing to perform his act because a toddler was in the audience, I asked chatgpt whether the comedian was right to do so. In the answer it referred to toddler development, when I asked to substantiate its claims it came with references to papers about teenager development. When I challenged it about this it agreed that the references were irrelevant, but insisted its initial claim was correct but refused to substantiate it. Kept referring to scientific research but was unwilling to provide any kind of references, no papers, no names of researchers or institutions, no details about the studies...
