We have a sort of saying/word play in Mexico when you say bye to someone: "Te vas por la sombrita" which translates roughly to "As you leave, walk under the shadow". I guess with the amount of sun this country gets we ought to have fun and excellent sun protection advice ;)

The albedo effect, put simply, is light coloured surfaces reflect more sunlight and UV than darker colours. This is why you can get sunburned by snow, and in unfortunate cases, go blind (snow blindness is a real and horrible thing). Make sure you protect your eyes too! Also, water is highly reflective. Wear your sun protection while boating and doing water activities.

Research scientists in Antarctica wear a LOT of sunscreen and wear protective clothing (including full helmets for head and eyes), despite the frigid temperature precisely because they can get burned easily with all that snow and nothing else surrounding them

Actually I did my PhD on this topic and it’s not quite that simple, colour can Be the cause of how things reflect, but it’s not the only factor. UV albedo depends on type of diffuse and direct UV incidence and the material itself. I recommend reading Michelle’s blog and referring to the paper she cites there. Water is also complicated because it doesn’t stay put, but yes it reflects enough to have an effect in some scenarios.

As someone who gets sunburnt very easily and lives in a place where there's a lot of snow, I've never been sunburnt from snow. Mainly because it gets dirty really quick and absorbs UV much better. Still, my chameleo glasses definitely get dark very fast, although the sellers in the optics salon where I got them said they work much better in cold temperatures, so that is a contibuting factor. But I remember one day when I wore them outside, and it was a cloudy day (the sky was completely cloudy, but those weren't super heavy clouds) and they got so dark that they weren't really effective in helping me see in just 15 minutes. So... I'm not a devoted sunscreen wearer (although since I switched to Aha and bha in my skincare, I wear sunscreen in the morning/afternoon/early evening) but that case with my glasses showed me how much UV is really reflected from the snow

Extremely late comment, but I can at least say that you're completely right about snow blindness! Specifically in Greenland, you're being told to constantly wear sunglasses if you wish to venture out into the bigger planes of snow. It luckily doesnt happen instantly, so you have a window of time where youre allowed to "forget" putting on sunglasses, with the time depending on things such as where the sun is and how clear the sky is. I once had an art teacher that went to Greenland as a teen/young adult and went against the advice of wearing sunglasses, which luckily for her only caused some temporary blindness and eye pain. ALWAYS wear sunglasses or visors when out in the snow on a sunny day, as it does genuinely strain your eyes a lot and can cause serious damage!

As somebody who lives in a place that does get the snow, sometimes enough to shut down the highways, the sadly ironic thing is, all the sunscreen and sunglasses get displayed in stores prominently in the summer, and are now starting to go into clearance bins now that beach season is over. There's perfectly good Blue Lizard marked down in some stores right now just because the season changed. On one hand, that's a bargain win for me. On the other, this gives people (myself included before I started watching channels like this,) the idea that you only need sunscreen in summer.

Michelle, that was amazing! Was just thinking and wondering about this topic last week as to what items I should buy and wear for total (almost) protection. Have bought over $300.00 in sunscreens and they all...ALL break me out. I decided on a UV-50 hat, dyed my Covid-related masks black or wear a neck gape (Coolibar), bought a sun protection umbrella and I limit my time in the sun. I'm completely comfortable this way after doing all that I can. Thanks so much again. 💕

It's the reflection and while you are in the water, the refraction of light that exposes you to UVA/UVB. So, hat, glasses, and mask are great protection, but what about your neck and arms?
@Kamase318

@@sct4040 Melasma is my main concern because it is on both cheeks. Sunscreen breaks me out all over my face so I use face masks, neck gapes, protective scarves, my very wide brimmed hats. I also use my protective umbrella (if the UV index is too high) for my face, neck and chest. I'm using all those $300+ sunscreen (with no problems) on my legs and arms in the summertime and use sun protective clothing in the winter. I never worry about exposure on my hands and feet as I like the warmth from the sun there and love my sandals in the spring and summer. I don't demonize the sun and there has to be a good reason why most people feel so much better on a sunny days whether they're inside the house or out. I've got all the protection I want and need. If you have sensitive and/or acne prone skin, I think it's a good idea to trial sunscreens by type so that you may narrow the type of ingredients/SPF filters your skin does not like. It's expensive - as you know - to haphazardly purchase a bunch of sunscreens. There are organic and inorganic sunscreens and even within those categories that are different combinations/concentrations of each ingredients. If I knew I didn't get along with zinc based sunscreens, I would avoid zinc based sunscreens. It's important to narrow the culprit. This can apply to all skincare.

I come from a snowy places, and the great thing about snow is that it's usually accompanied by weather that requires covering up nearly everything but your eyes. Snow also causes a glare when it's sunny, so sunglasses are definitely required. In snowy places, the sunnier it is, the colder it is, therefore more sun = more layers and not a lot of exposed skin.

My eyes are super light sensitive, bright light blinds me & is a migraine trigger so I have worn sun glasses when outside since a teenager. I now wear oversized, wrap around anti glare sun glasses that can be worn over my prescription corrective glasses when I haven't had a prescription pair of sun glasses made. The glasses need to completely cover the eyes--that includes the sides. I prefer it when they roughly cover my orbital sockets since I don't like putting sunscreen on or around my eyes. If you spend a lot of time outside doing a particular activity or sport (skiing, boating, diving, etc ) they do make athletic clothing & swim wear that has spf ratings now & covers more of your body for water activities where sunscreen would just not hold up.

I' m not the suntan kind of person but I do like to have picnics with friends outdoors so in Spring, Summer I do wear SPF and hats because as a brown skin girl of Indian origin, I don't want to get darker in summer, especially when swimming. But then again, having been to Australia, I do have the impression that Swiss summers are totally different from your Aussie ones.

My answer to this is both, I wear sunscreen every day and hats whenever I go outside and I spend a longer time outside, or when it's sunny even when I'm only outside a few minutes. People have looked funny at me and called me crazy but it's become one of my goals in life to protect myself as well as I possibly can from UV exposure. I'm in central Victoria, and my girls are supposed to go to secondary school with caps - their caps have to have the school logo on them. The first couple of years I simply kept "forgetting" to buy them, so they had to use their wide-brimmed hats in the same navy shade of the school colour (no logo). Then I received an email stating they were unacceptable because they were out of uniform. So I bought the caps, dragged out my sewing machine and stitched the caps directly onto the outside of the top of the wide-brimmed hats in as tasteful a way as possible. I sent them each to school like this with notes stating that this was my only compromise and that if they altered these hats in ANY way I would be taking legal action. That they were technically wearing the caps with the logo as per school uniform and I felt this would stand up in court. That their caps were not approved by the Cancer Foundation, so I felt justified in looking after my girls' best interests, seeing as they were not. I got no more complaints in the last 4 years!! My girls are really fair and burn easily, they use sunscreen as well as wide hats, sunglasses and sleeves; they are also proud to wear their true hats to school! My youngest is in yr 10, so only two more years, then I can separate the caps from the hats for the op-shop!

great info! My main question left is how the UPF rating works... does it apply towards UVA protection? is it only stating UVB protection? Is there any UVA protection from the clothing? Also from the UPF clothing I have, it says not to use fabric softener on it... makes me curious about the chemical makeup of the UPF in the clothes and apparently fabric softener will compromise it... just sharing some thoughts, thanks again for sharing so much info! much appreciated

I once got a horrible sunburn on one half of my face, just because I was walking in Washington DC on a sunny day, and the sun’s reflection was bouncing off of light cement sidewalks. It was horrible.

You’re in Sydney right? It snows in the blue mountains an hour from Sydney. Though I get you on the “what is this snow thing?” Because I’ve certainly never seen the snow in my 34 odd years of life. I’d like to one day.

When I lived in Japan I always used a sun parasol in the sun as it was not seen as weird there. But there's no way you could so that here where I live in the UK without everyone staring and thinking your weird. So I just wear hats and sunglasses in addition to sunscreen, mostly to prevent getting tanned.

I wear long sleeves dressed pretty much all year round. I wear a hat and an umbrella with gloves for spf. I only use sunscreen on my body because those are the areas being exposed. Reapplying on my face and over my makeup is too much.

Been wondering about this lately! I think the good thing about masks, is those protect the bottom half of my face from direct sun and when it's super cold.... However, not too fun during extreme summer heat :/

Thanks so much for this video! 👑👩‍🔬🙌 I started wearing hats and caps last year every time I go out during the day - I was shocked I didn't realize how tan my scalp used to get. 😂 I still wear sunscreen, but I kinda feel hats add a bit of protection, so I don't have to worry that much did I put enough sunscreen, when should I reapply etc. My main method of protection though is staying out of the sun haha I have a sun allergy and this is the only thing that actually helps.

great video!!!! i always wear a big black wide brim wool hat all year and use an umbrella that has a layer of ruffles on the sides that probably give just a bit of extra protection. I'm cringing remembering the summer i wore a lacy straw hat with a small brim, but at least i was using sunscreen then. looking forward to your video on sunglasses

HI Michelle: Question here: I have curly hair. A lot of the information out there says sulfates and silicone should be avoided for curly hair but I haven't noticed that much difference as long as I don't wash too often. Same with the recommended conditioners; does it really mater?
@sue8412
@sue8412 2 жыл бұрын
The reason they say that is because sulfates can dry your hair and curly hair is by its nature drier. Silicone can form a layer around your hair strand which can: positive - smooth out the outer layer, making it shinier or negative - form a film and prevent moisture from leaving or entering. So for curly hair, it can basically prevent moisture from entering (bad because it’s dry) since the silicones can remain even after you wash your hair, preventing moisture from entering and thus making your hair even drier. So I personally think you can use sulfates and silicones but make sure to use products that work for you, and make sure your shampoo properly cleanses out the silicone (aka contains good surfectants).

It depends on skin type and location. I skin type 3 living in north Texas. I rarely ever burn. So wearing a hat is good enough for medium uv. my arms are most damage because I wore board brim hat for years as out door worker. In the mid west which get close to 40 degrees north wearing a hat good enough for type 2. Wearing hat is effective for type 1 in alaska. wearing a hat in southern Australia is not enough because in summer the uv just high as the tropics for long term exposure for type 3.
