They didn't accidentally do anything. The high court ordered their release and ordered the department obey a new court imposed test on whether they can hold them in detention. That means it isn't a static number, it's an ever growing number. This is the result of poor bipartisan policy over successive governments that has opened this hole for the court to make such an order, and a failure of the current parliament to plug that hole and return to court to rescind the order. It would not change under LNP, they're the same thing and have contributed to it happening the same amount as labor. This is the country we live in until we get rid of both major parties and fix our immigration policies.

All of their work can be done i 4 hrs by looking at the spreadsheet report that is ALWAYS generated and recorded for audit purposes, enter the criteria and press enter, print the document, check it email it, Everyone there has the ability to get this from their internt database and again, enter the search criteria, print it and wow.. will you look at that, it's all there, up to date to the time of accessing the information.
