They were offered a 33% sentence reduction for a guilty plea. Another KZbinr described it as a coerced guilty plea because many weren’t aware that they were doing anything wrong so they could have mounted a defence.

The majority had no prior criminal record or experience dealing with the police and legal system so they were easily coerced into pleading guilty although , if convicted at trial, they may well have won on appeal. Also there was no bail so anyone pleading not guilty would have to endure awful remand conditions rather than much better prison facilities.

I think the releases from prison roll out in september and were meant to relieve overcrowding in prisons . This will be thanks to Timpson who is sympathetic to prison leavers (he employs them) . I understand they still get some vetting before being employed but you would think that if he knows there are excons who are STILL not safe to employ, then he would also reason that they are not all safe to be let out simply based on having fulfilled 40% of their term...Previously I believe prisoners who had fulfilled 60% of their sentence were evaluated and if found to have behaved in prison, were then let out on parole. Parole being where, if you are then caught in a crime of any kind, you are back to finish the sentence under lock and key. Given that they are now holding people on remand who may have done nothing and are still filling a prison space, that all seems total double speak.
