The European drone project Labyrinth aims to keep new and conventional air traffic separate, especially in busy airspaces such as those expected in urban areas. The project provides a new drone traffic service and illustrates its potential to improve the safety and efficiency of civil land, air and sea transport, as well as emergency and rescue operations.
Following the U-space concept, the project partners have developed and tested a system that receives flight intentions from drone operators and calculates collision-free routes for them. The system then monitors the flights and automatically recalculates the trajectory and sends new instructions when sudden events occur, such as a new geofenced area or a priority flight.
Within the project, DLR was responsible for implementing the core and advanced U-space services involved, as well as the interface that allows operators to request optimised flight paths.

Das europäische Drohnenprojekt Labyrinth zielt darauf ab, neuen und konventionellen Luftverkehr im sicheren Abstand voneinander zu betreiben, insbesondere in stark frequentierten Lufträumen, wie sie in städtischen Gebieten zu erwarten sind. Das Projekt bietet einen neuen Drohnen-Verkehrsdienst und veranschaulicht dessen Potenzial, die Sicherheit und Effizienz des zivilen Land-, Luft- und Seeverkehrs sowie der Notfall- und Rettungseinsätze zu verbessern.
In Anlehnung an das U-Space-Konzept haben die Projektpartner ein System entwickelt und getestet, welches Flugabsichten von Drohnenbetreibern empfängt und kollisionsfreie Routen für sie berechnet. Das System überwacht dann die Flüge. Wenn plötzliche Ereignisse eintreten, wie z.B. eine neue Flugverbotszone oder ein Prioritätsflug, berechnet es automatisch die Flugroute neu und sendet neue Anweisungen.
Im Rahmen des Projekts war das DLR für die Implementierung der Kern- und erweiterten U-Space-Dienste sowie für die Schnittstelle verantwortlich, über die Betreiber optimierte Flugrouten anfordern können.
