Never be afraid of failure or that something might be more difficult than what someone else makes it look like. When I was a toddler, my mom made lace-covered pantalettes for me to wear with an old-fashioned, puffed-sleeve dress she made for me. For the next few years, she kept adding rows of lace as I grew. Those pantalettes are 2/3 added rows of lace. And we still have that garment, tucked away.

After much frustration in seeking a Gibson girl style blouse I finally broke down and bought a pattern. I'm a strict hand sewer ( grew up beading in my traditional Native style of beadwork) so this wasn't too bad at all and now I've made 2 high neck insertion blouses that I can't believe how authentic they look. If you want to improve this, it sounds insane, but work with faux fur. I was absolute GARBAGE at handsewing and could wrangle a machine into maybe two stitches, then I fell into a profession where I'm constantly sewing faux fur. I found the extra weight, lack of forgiveness for messiness, and quality of decent faux fur backing all put up the bumpers for me to learn how to bowl a strike with it.

At first I didn't think I would be interested in this video, but then I realized I use similar techniques when I crochet. I just finished attaching my crocheted trim to the edge of a modern fleece baby blanket. I hand basted and stitched it in place, going around the whole thing five times to secure it in place. I'm working on another one now. They are for our twin grandsons, who are one week old as of April 16th.

@@callysto_ii I've got one of the brand new Electric Eel Wheel 6's - hit the market about 3 weeks ago. I also have an EEW Nano which I've had since that one hit the market a couple of years ago. The Nano is great, especially for new spinners, but the 6 is my idea of the perfect e-spinner. I'm so pleased with it I sold my Ashford e-spinner a week after the 6 arrived. I had intended to keep the 6 as a plying spinner, but it's so much like using my Ashford double drive treadle wheel, that I'm happy to spin on it, too. Between those two, I've not used my treadle wheel in about 7 months - although some of that is because I've also taken up sewing and I don't have room to have my sewing machine and cutting table up in my sitting room and have the treadle wheel in there at the same time.

@@callysto_ii You're welcome - and a Kiwi is a sensible choice if space is at a premium. I got my Traddy when I lived in a bigger place so the size of it was less of an issue. I don't find double treadle wheels comfortable to use and I also needed something that could be carried easily in one hand - which the Traddy is. Much easier than the poorly named Traveller, for instance. Do bear in mind, if cost is an issue that a brand new EEW nano can be bought for less than £120 and it has the oomph to spin at a reasonable speed. The bobbins do somewhat limit how much it will hold, but even so, it will compare well to the average spindle load and being so small it takes up virtually no room and can easily be carried around in one hand. Plus, with the 6 coming onto the market, it might also be possible to start finding them turning up on the second hand market for quite a bit less.

My weight tends to fluctuate because of a medical condition and that always makes me hesitant to put a lot of time into my own clothes, since I never know if this thing will fit a few months down the line. I live in Japan, am an "average" USA size. Here I can fit into a LL, i modify 90% of the clothes I buy so it fits better. Insertion lace, opening the sides or back with ribbon, make things fit better and are a wonderful way to customize purchased clothing

The absolute very first thing I did when a possible move to Japan came up was go check that my sewing machine would work there (it did) - I knew that buying clothes would be tricky. One good thing for me: you get lots of choices in shoes size 24.5 (a UK 5.5).

I was so happy to see the pet quarantine facilities are so nice! It looks very clean and comfortable. I was honestly very worried when I heard Cesario would be staying there. I worked abroad and decided to leave my furry friend at home with a caretaker for a year after seeing how terrible the quarantine facility was. The animals were all left in their carriers from the plane, which the staff did not clean. They didn’t keep different types of animals in separate areas so the constant dog barking seemed to scare many of the other animals. ㅠㅠ I imagined such a place for Cesario - what an immense relief to see that he is living like a king! I hope he will be back at home soon.

I am glad you got to visit with him! I imagine it soothed your soul a bit to be able to cuddle him. At least that how I would have felt. Also, a bit sad to have to leave him. But he looks to be doing well and you will be able to bring him home soon. I have way more lace than I should own in my stash and IIRC a goodly portion would be appropriate for insertion. Perhaps I will need to make a dress. Although I despise wearing white, so that’s a hurdle I need to get over. I’ve managed quite a lovely Regency wardrobe without a white gown until recently when I made a black and white striped gown, so maybe one of these Lingerie dresses can be in my future.

You can buy lace in other colours. Just as well, because me and white really don't do well together.

If you already have lace, you can dye it. Mustard for yellow; ketchup (or tomato paste) for red, etc. Too, use vinegar with your dye to set your job. Salt soak/rinse to make double sure no bleeding. A lot of work, true, but easier for small amounts to be dyed. No, I don't know how egg dying kits would work, but same principles, so....

Martha Pullen is an Heirloom Stitching expert who developed teaching videos on children's and dolls clothing to show the arts of insertion, embroidery and smocking techniques from the 1980s onward. Her information and techniques are useful, and she even created an insertion lace product line for the interest.

I recommend getting a bright, full spektrum lightbulb for your worklamp. They were around 20-25€ last time, I bought one (might be cheaper by now) but they are wonderful, if you don't have the luxury of sewing under bright daylight. You can actually see colors correctly and fine details are much more visible, as well. Just beware, that you may have trouble getting to sleep, if you use them late at night.

There are vintage sewing machine feet that join the lace (or any other fabric) edge to edge so you just have to feed it through the machine as it stitches.
