I didn't know that was how to use my stitch markers?! I thought they were clipped right into the stitch, not next to it! Good thing I watched. I have got in such a muddle with markers on the purl side of lace knitting , I keep them to the back now. I didn't know to take yarn back when slipping them until I saw your video. It's often the simple tips that make a world of difference.

I love this video. I would add that if a person is using interchangeable circulars, the t-pin hole can be used to thread lifelines while knitting. Simply thread thin contrasting lifeline yarn or embroidery floss into the t-pin hole (of certain brands such as Chiaogoo,hiya hiya and knit picks, a split in the cable of addi brand) to hold the thread then just knit that row and untie the lifeline. No darning needle needed or extra time spent, just regular knitting and remembering to use markers that open-i use tiny tin bulb shaped that open.

I'm new to knitting and saw a lace pattern that looks pretty, so I thought "what the hell, it's just a combination of stitches!"... was I wrong! I keep having to go back to the beginning, and now I find that this is actually a thing and there are techniques to prevent it from happening 😅 The last time I had gotten to the third iteration of the pattern and everything started to unravel while I looked for a skipped stitch Thank you for the tips, I feel like I can actually get somewhere now with the lifelines!

This is just excellent, Suzanne. I'm trying out pure linen for washcloths... Now I want to make a couple little hand towels for the bathroom as well. And I wish to do them in a sort of lacy design. Could you recommend any particular patterns? I found one on ravelry for victorian hand towels. Are there others that you'd recommend? Simple designs. I even like the centre part of your design you're working on in this video. The part highlighted in red. Wouldn't that be a lovely repeat across a small hand towel... about 80 or so stitches? Hi Suzanne. I'm a new subscriber and I really appreciate your videos. I'm just starting my first lace shawl and I have a question. It's the Midsummer Rose shawl by Lene Tosti and the gauge is 20 stitches and 26 rows for 4 inches using size 4 needles. How do you count the stitches on lace though? They're not exactly side by side like garter stitches or knitting in the round. Those stitches are easy to count. I'm having a hard time counting the stitches on my gauge swatch to even know if I'm knitting at gauge. Help!

I started my first lace simple 1 row, 1 P row, but the second row is indented 1 stitch so I cannot absolutely cannot read below. Anyway have been knitting over 50 years and I cannot do this. By the time I do 2 or 3 rows, I am missing a stitch or have an extra. I have ripped as much as I have knit. This is so humbling I am so sure I am doing it right and then I have gone asleep somewhere and went off pattern, rambling vine. I am using double thread, and god forbid MOHAIR !!! big mistake, and so can easily mistake 2 loops for 2 separate stitches and ripping is maddening. Wanted to use up my stash which is why using 2 strands. I was chiding myself for having to count every row so was surprised to hear you say you count often. It has been 8 days of trial and error and tutorials. I decided finally that when I get to a mistake if not easily fixed, I finish the row and separate the section with 12 rows of garter and start all over again. It still looks pretty but my bumbling is very humbling. LOL ... I should have practiced with worsted 2 or 3 repeats instead of 7, first to get the hang. This was helpful

@@ooohlaa13 Hi Barbara, with lace, I count on every return row. I count between the markers every time. That way, I find my mistakes before it is too late. It is almost always a forgotten yarnover that is the mistake and it is easy to pick them up on the return row. The counting becomes a habit after awhile and even addictive. It is a zen type of thing and very relaxing after you get into the flow of it.

I couldn't read my stitches because the pattern is offset and I never developed but today it is finally emerging and I can read it thanx to more counting, and you.

How can I manage increasing stitches on a lace motif? I am trying to knit a batsleeve sweater and the increases are not working smoothly.

@@SuzanneBryan Yes, maintaining the repeats but adding stitches to make the sleeve. My repeats are each 17 stitches. How do I do increases of 2 st every four rows, for example?

What I do in this instance is make a pretty wide chart of my pattern, a full set of rows high. Then, I find my place near the center - matching where the edge is on each side of my work. As I add stitches to each end, I then also, move out the same number of stitches on my chart. For the cast on stitches or M1s or whichever increase you are using, you then move out on the chart the same number of stitches. On the following row, you follow the chart. At the same time, I keep the first and last two stitches in St st as it is much cleaner looking to not have yarn overs near a seam or edge. Those two stitches give you a nice place to seam later. Thank you for the excellent information, but it is awfully hard to see what you mean to demonstrate. The demonstration is scrunched down into the bottom of the frame, and your fingers block the stitches.

The portions on placing the lifeline and dropping down to the lifeline are clear. The rest of the demonstration goes from iffy to not visible on a second by second basis. There are shadows interfering, and there is very little contrast or color difference.

Part of the problem is the light-colored chart in the background. Another problem is the fact that the image goes in and out of focus, especially when you are working around the markers. I watched 2 more of your videos. Both used light yarn against a dark background and were easier to see. The magnification was better, too.
