This comic gives me the vibe that Lackadaisy is indeed a light-hearted tragedy. We see the characters doing horrible crimes and hurting innocents but still love them for how well-written characters they are. We see them fighting for keeping the speakeasy alive but at the same time, it only brings them more misery. Lackadaisy is like a painful home for these people that have no other place to go. Even if the criminal life only hurts them more, they keep going, for it is all they have. This lifestyle has taken so much away from them and left broken families, broken bodies, broken dreams. The characters cling onto the remains of what is familiar for them, for they fear they cannot continue without it. Honestly, Tracy Butler, you're a genius.

Tracy mentioned that this was her dabbling in German Expressionism. For me, what established that feeling, believe it or not, is one of the smallest details: a streetlamp. In the second image, when you see Ivy (I'm guessing 'cause it looks like her) creeping through the alley, there's a streetlamp next to her. Its design is so distorted that it calls to mind the designs present in classic German Expressionist cinema like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." The movement was characterized by feeling over reality, so it distorted the designs of its architecture to create a sense that something was off in the world portrayed. As soon as I saw that streetlamp, it established the German Expressionism feel that Tracy obviously intended.

In the realm of Lackadaisy, Where felines roam and shadows sway, A tale of mystery and malaise, Unfolds in an eldritch way. The cats, they speak in whispers low, Of secrets dark and hidden deep, And in the shadows lurks a foe, Whose presence makes the bravest weep. The art, it flows like ink on page, A world brought to life in black and white, And in this world, a war doth rage, A battle fought with all their might. But in the end, who shall prevail, In this world of cats and schemes? Only time will tell the tale, Of Lackadaisy's hopes and dreams. So heed my words, dear reader mine, And enter this world with caution true, For in Lackadaisy's twisted design, The fates of all may rest on you.

I think this might be how they all will die. Freckle - captured, maybe by rivals, dying in imprisonment Ivy - Arrested, dying in custody Mitzi - Suicide, perhaps of a broken heart Wick - Complications of old age Mordecai - Hard to tell, maybe poisoned Viktor - Captured and sewn into this horrible beast Zib - Giving a last performance, perhaps a heart attack from all of the illicit consumption Rocky - Drowning Despite their now deathly appearances, the old gang all meet together in the aged ruins of the Lackadaisy speakeasy for One. Last. Drink... EDIT: I now know this is completely not true because of the stream, so yeah. Still a pretty cool idea, and a sad one at that.

I'd say Mitzi's, Mordecai's and Viktor's lines are more connected to their past and present. Mitzi is stuck in the past, unable to let go of it and stuck in the grief after losing her husband. Mordecai is haunted by the mystery surrounding his former boss' death. Viktor used to be a man with bright future but the criminal life has left him with a broken body. And Zib's and Freckle's part of the poem is more connected to their "emotional deaths". Guilt is slowly eating him from inside. Zib used to be a passionate musician but being forced to live the criminal and static life he never wanted has left him apathetic and emotionally dying. He is like a shadow, a ghost of what he used to be. But I'm worried about Rocky.

Looking back at this after the release of the series teaser, the bit here with Rocky staring in through the window reminds me a lot of his younger self in the teaser pressing his face to the window, when he's "desolate and all alone"... There are probably other parallel scenes in the comic, with Rocky looking through windows, but that in itself makes me realize the symbolic value of this Rocky-window pairing, how he's always looking in but not on the inside. Like when he sees Mitzi and Wick in the Lackadaisy, and is scared that Wick is taking his place.

She "boldly crossed the Rubikon", which is a reference to Caesar crossing said river, which formed the border between his official territory and the Roman heartland. When Caesar, then only provincial ruler and part of the triumvirate, would cross that river with an army, he would unrevocably break the Roman law and be an outcast until victory. In the start, Ivy was a mere student, linked with the criminal underworld only by family ties. In case of a roundup, she had the most deniablity and the most safety... until she joined Freckle and Rocky as a driver. Now, there's no going back for her...
