Thanks for doing this test Deby. It came at the right time for me as I did a couple of coasters with the Envirotex. Mine are still soft after several days though. I think I messed them up by spraying the tiles with a sealer first then using the resin. I'm still trying to find an answer as to how to get them to cure hard. BTW, I did read somewhere if the resin isn't clear don't buy it as resin has a shelf life (who knew!) and will begin to turn yellow. If you haven't used the opened resin after 6 months, you run the risk of it bit curing or turning yellow. I'm just passing this info along in case you or anyone else runs into problems. Thanks again for ALL your super videos and taking the time to share your info with us.

Sorry to hear your resin is soft. I've been lucky that I've never had this so far. I'm not sure how it can be cured if it didn't work out. Try one of the resin art groups on facebook. I'm sure they will have come across this before and have some tips for you.

I have used that brand of resin a few times that you are speaking about it the video. Out of the first box I purchased, the hardener was yellow. I poured on an oil painting and the resin yellowed it. However, afterward I bought another box of it, neither the resin nor the hardener was yellow in the new package, both were clear and lay down clear.

Hi! loved the video so easy to follow. I have done a little search regarding Envirotex Lite Resin. If the bottles feel a little cool, place them in some warm water until the same as room temperature. This will stop any cloudy finish. I am going to purchase some as the price is right for my pocket. Thank you for all of your hard work and sharing some wonderful info.

On the island its pretty common for things to sit here for a while until they are bought. Even some of the food in the grocery store can be past the sell by date when you get it home from the store. I do worry that old resin will yellow though. We don't want that for our art work.

Sadly on the island we come across this sort of thing often. Stuff can sit on the shelves for months or even years. Even our food is sometimes past the sell by date by the time we buy it.

Oh dear. Yes, if the hardener is yellow already, it's too old. Ouch. I gather that the clearer the resin, the more expensive it is. Another ouch. What island is it that you are on? Is there any way to, I dunno, special-order something so that it is not past its used-by date?

I have a friend who works for a resin company and often times they want the hardener to be a different color from the resin. So I don't believe that it necessarily means the resin is old

Enviro Tex hardener has a yellow tint in the US also. I bought some for jewelry and returned it immediately. If you have access to art & glow resin or pro marine resin those are much cheaper than Art Resin. I'm getting mine from Amazon.

Just bought a box of the sae resin today! So happy with the results you got ...I feel I can use it with confidence now... can you tell me how many coats you used on the tile? I know 3 with the spray...but was it just one coat of the resin? Thanks for any help...also just to let your Canadian viewers know I got this at Home Hardware. They had 3 sizes and I just got the smallest if only one coat is needed it will last me a long time...unless there is a sudden need for coasters! I am also experimenting with old vinyl tiles that were left over from 40 years ago in the basement....I am doing an acrylic pour after spraying it black with Krylon (sticks to plastic) They are large, 12 X12 I think and if it works on the big tile I will cut the tiles in 4 and have a center trivet and 4 coasters.... nothing ventured...nothing gained...I will also try one with no prep on the surface and see what happens. Thanks for your experimenting...makes me happy to see I got the right product as I am on a tight budget. 💖😊 Happy pouring! Hugs from Canada!

I have been trying the environteck resin and can not for the life of me get 4 good coasters w/out any flaws in the resin when it dries, even between pouring and putting under a dome it seems to have some dust particles, which mars the piece and also it is difficult to get rid of the tiny bubbles, although I keep blowing. Would like to know if you are still using it and have worked out the kinks, thanks

I have never had any luck with the Enviro-Tex lite for coasters. The coasters will get a ring after 10 / 15 minutes. They do go away after an hour or two. I feel I can't sell them until I find the right resin that won't make a ring.

Thank you Deby for this test. I have 2 sets of 4 coasters (for last Christmas gifts) and was searching for a way to make them heat-proof. We live where it is cold/dry in the Winter, but hot/humid in Summer. I really didn't want to use resin, but alas, it appears there isn't a really great choice. Also because they are gifts the finish can't be beat. For my stuff, I'll use Dupli spray, for others I'll have to get over my resin phobia :) Thanks again!

I did the resin today and very carefully followed the directions but the resin pulled away from the paint on the coaster. I had wiped them down with alcohol and gave them plenty of time to dry. People on the FB page are saying to sand it and pour on more resin. Yours were so pretty. I did use silicone in the paint pour. Wondering if that could be the problem. I posted photos of them on the FB page. Thanks.
@AcrylicPouring
@AcrylicPouring 6 жыл бұрын
Silicone is hard to remove. Even the slightest hint and the resin can leave voids. Even the oil from your hands and fingers holding the edge of the tile can cause it too. Try cleaning as best you can and then adding a good coat of varnish before the resin. And yes, if the first coat is not perfect, you can always clean again, sand and give another coat. Good luck.

Awesome idea to wear 2 pairs of gloves!!! Curious if you'd know if for sealing tile for a use as a coaster, would it be possible to first seal with a layer of polycrylic, and then something like duplo acryilic enamel for a more pristine finish?? :o
@AcrylicPouring
@AcrylicPouring 6 жыл бұрын
I've never tried so I couldn't say. I think thin coats are the key to success so perhaps the poly would work if you did a very thin coat. But then using a spray over the top would most likely leave that slightly misty look and you would lose the gloss from the poly. Maybe give it a try on an old tile you don't love first. Can you report back how you get on? The members in our chat group would love to see. facebook.com/groups/acrylicpouring

I really loved the Art Resin but its so expensive here and only available in the tiny starter packs. This one was still expensive but not quite so bad and I can get it in large sizes. I can't get Mastercast here on the island but it certainly looks like a good option.

I wonder if humidity has anything to do with your results in testing the coatings. I assume that the your location is very humid, but perhaps others who have had better luck live in drier areas. I have noticed a difference in paint drying time here in CA, as opposed to our previous location in Richmond, VA.

There is certainly something that must be involved because even when several of us use the same products, we can get different results. What sticks for me doesn't for you and vice versa. It's a mystery really, but I do think that thin coats are the key, whatever product we try.

Have others have said, check inside the box before you buy it- if the hardener is starting to yellow, try looking in the other boxes. However, that does not mean that your clear coat will be yellow. I personally have never seen hardener THAT yellow before, but that’s not to say that you can’t use it

Is it old or the chemicals or an additive to keep the two easily identifiable? I looked at their site and watched other videos using this and they’re all yellow. I used a brand last night that was tinted blue. In any case, there does seem to be agreement that the Envir Tech is the best for the money and the easiest to work with. Art Resin is too thin for many and I’ve found the same. As for not having any VOC, that may be true but it still set off my air quality alarm. Art Resin has the most “secret” ingredients of them all and uses SMS for their safety rating. Others use a more vigorous rating institute. Environ Tech it is. Thanks for this video.

I really appreciated all of the info you sent me Cyd. I've been looking at the full face respirators and think I'll get one. Not so easy for making videos where I talk, but you can't be too careful with your health.

Hi Amara. I think Deby is taking a break from YouTubing for health reasons. Perhaps she'll be back to answer questions. I have found every resin I've tried to have varying degrees of odor, except ArtResin. That doesn't mean you won't be sensitive to it. or shouldn't use common sense. I don't know what you mean by the hot cup test :-) I have learned that no resin mixes or sets well in cold weather, so you'd want to use it when the temp is at least 65, which is perfect for opening windows and enjoying a breeze. If you can't wait for warmer weather, it's best to put both the resin and hardener in a warm bath before mixing and trying to keep the area warm, preferably in the garage or a studio. Many of us rely on a quality air monitor so we'll know exactly what is going on. It's easy to mistake the symptoms of nerves and excitement for harmful chemicals that might not be there at all. Happy pouring.

Amara Fiesterman I remember that and how she looked so dismayed and knocked the coaster off the cup. She has a wonderfully understated humor. LOL ArtResin can withstand up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, if I remember correctly. You won’t be disappointed with it.

Deby, was the pour on smelly?
@AcrylicPouring

Not that I noticed at all but I do have the windows open front and back and its very breezy in there, and I'm not at all sensitive to smells.

Can you use a polyurethane?

I haven't tried those because most of what I read suggests that they will yellow quite quickly. I'd like to keep mine looking nice for as long as possible

Thank you Debbie for your display. I bought the poor on and my instructions say to mix in one cup for 2 minutes and then transfer and pour into another cup and mix for one more minute. You did it all in one cup and mixed for 3 minutes. It says double mixing required and yours didn't say that. I am totally confused. Please help me clear this up or anyone else who knows the answer to this.

So then, I wasn’t sure if the polycyclic was good for coasters or not. Maybe I need to watch again

?I use the the pour on I love the product BUT always mess it up usually just a bubble or two or I knock some thing on it or on top of it I really drive myself crazy . But I don't think it should be yellow I think it's getting old

I often find the tiniest little specks of dust in there if I look really carefully, even if I do cover the resin while it dries. I think its very hard to get it completely flawless without a controlled environment

You are stirring that resin way to rapidly....it WILL cause bubbles....lots of them, and I don't know if I would feel comfortable using a torch on it .... One thing you can do if you end up with bubbles on the item you've poured onto is blow on the bubbles using a straw....they pops them quickly. Also, you only have a certain "window of time" when working with Enviro Tex....if you go past that time, it begins to thicken and can become challenging to work with. (You left the other little canvas OUTSIDE??? You don't worry about bugs and particles in the air latching onto the sticky surface?)

From my research the Envirotex is more expensive than Art Resin and there are much cheaper, good quality art resins on the market

The bigger issue for me with a coaster is that I only drink cold drinks which of course condensate and hot humid weather. So I need an absorbent coaster. And while I wouldn't use the envirotex for art it's perfect for an application like this

Just keep this for dark colours and the better stuff to go over white. I used some that had a blue tinge and completely spoiled the white. You have to use what you can get unfortunately

Thank you, yes I agree. May be best not to use anything with a hint of yellow over the top of the white paint.

Thank you! I have my own channel where I have just recently started pouring tiles and I just used the Envirotex resin for the first time the other day and what a BEAUTIFUL finish it was!!! Your coffee cup test was brilliant and was reassuring that I can sell my coasters with this particular resin coating, thank you so much for the most practical, informative video I have seen in a log time! If you have a moment I would be honored if you would check out my channel: HeatherWrightArt

Whoa....did you do this video in your underwear??? Can't see what you're wearing under the table, but the top looks like an undergarment!!! (EnvironTex is quite pricey.)
Painting COASTERS takes HOW LONG?!! From pouring blooms to resin coating, is it worth the work?
