It's the rule. That way the refs can pick it up to check the pocket before they have a chance to do anything to alter it.

Very poor sportsmanship displayed by future UNC players, hogging the ball and refusing to pass to others outside their posse. They displayed behavior typical of insecure 12 year olds, not the best in the country. Very disappointed!
