Lada 1500 Combi Deluxe '84 hand crank start.
First start after few month.

Handbook stuff. First turning the engine without ignition for lubrication. Then pumping gas manually, handbrake on, gear neutral, ignition on, pressing acclerator a few times, choke halfway up and afer few turns on the crank it fired almost immediately. Great.

@Dan Danba Carburator has a device called accleration pump which squirts fuel when gas pedal is pressed. Pumping the pedal puts raw gas into the manifold and makes cold start easier. Care must be taken to not pump too many times.

The dashboard was from the 2103 (2106) model. The steering wheel comes definitely from 2106. The orriginal 2102 would have a 2101 dashboard.

Great way to break your hand. If you crank start your car you must hold your fingers exactly so if the the engine hits accidentally, it hits away from your hand not hit your hand.

Also never fully grasp it - always cup the handle. In a Model T that little tiny engine alone would break your hand at the wrist - nevermind a huge Lada from 1984, 100 years later.

@@boxr_4214 Yeah, the T was massive compared to European cars of the era, both in terms of power and engine displacement. Most European countries used to (or still do) tax cars heavily based on engine displacement, which is why customers traditionally favoured small engines. My dad bought an almost-new van for a great price in 1989 because the previous owner considered the tax on the 2.5 l Diesel engine too much! Guess why V8s were considered a luxury then and still are. Of course fuel is also much more expensive in Europe, so efficiency has always been more important. A US gallon is around 3.8 litres and in Europe the price per litre is around the same as the US price per gallon.

I've seen people hand-crank one-cylinder Diesel engines... it's hard work! Not "half a turn of the handle and off it goes" but rather "Crank like a madman to get it up to speed and release the decompression lever with a prayer" 😀

I assume so, as he is manually fueling the engine for a start, and oil lubrication isnt electric, i think But this can also be done if the car is on a hill (its a manual) and rolling down it while pressing the accelerator after shifting from Neutral to 1st would also start it good

Yes, that was what it was designed for. Prime the carb (only necessary if the car has sat for a while) and off you go. Doesn't work if the car has an electric fuel pump unless there's some juice left in the battery. That's quite possible, the starter needs much more power than a fuel pump. The oil pump is always driven straight off the engine I think, too risky making that electric. Bump-starting works with all manuals if they're parked on a slope. Put the car into 1st, left foot on the clutch, right foot on the brake. Release the brake and once you've gathered some speed let off the clutch and the engine should start. Did that with my parents' 2009 VW Golf last summer when the battery finally died completely. That was a bit tricky, it was parked on a somewhat busy city street. Luckily the space in front of it was vacant and it was a quiet time of the day so I could wait for the cars to pass and then pull out of the parking space rolling downhill. Two years ago I also helped bump the fairly new Renault Diesel van of a contractor. The van had sat for a week or so in freezing weather and the battery was stone dead. The younger of the two contractors was terrified of the idea of bump-starting, the slightly older one was fine. He got behind the wheel, five people or so pushed him to turn towards a sloping bit of road and off they went. Done in five minutes instead of waiting for roadside assistance for at least an hour, possibly longer.

By the time you get into heavy traffic, hopefully your battery has been charged enough to run the starter. I don't think any post-WWII cars were sold without a starter, the handle was just a backup plan. Lead-acid batteries tend to dislike the cold and it certainly gets cold in parts of Russia.

Probably for showing us on KZbin how it's done. Besides, all we can see is that the battery has enough juice to run a few measly dash lights, that doesn't necessarily mean it's anywhere near good enough to run the starter. Basic electrical engineering: the more current (amps) you draw the lower your battery voltage drops. A failing or poorly charged battery makes the drop much worse. The dash lights draw a few milliamps, the starter probably somewhere around 80-100 amps. If your battery is pretty flat, small loads like the dash lights will work just fine but as you try to crank the starter everything dies. Same on modern cars, that's physics. The only difference is that old cars simply die with a flat battery, modern computers can do all sorts of crazy things when the battery voltage drops too far, making the entire dash light up like a Christmas tree.
