Ladders were never improved upon, except for the side swap move.
They were scarce in Unity and Syindicate, and I never saw enemies using them to pursue you. They just stay on the ground and shoot.
Games: Assassin's Creed 1, 2, Brotherhood, 3, IV Black Flag, Valhalla.

@Uncle Crispy stealth was useless in the original trilogy up until unity as well because you could oneshot people. I barely used stealth in previous games because it was easier to just steamroll my way through entire forts, since you could also oneshot people in straight up combat. Not to say you cant to that in odyssey/origins/valhalla either, but it's not a good argument in my opinion The precursors being perceived as Gods is because the story is set before assassins and templars were a thing, chronologically we're set in prequels. Those who came before/Isu being perceived as Gods is very plausible and sensible, because they're set up as that in the lore in the games before Origins as well. Playing the story is fine because the progression is made at such a rate that you can match the requirements naturally, although I can agree that youre staved off from side content (side missions) because theyre usually a lvl higher than youre supposed to be. That kind of sucks. It's never been about templars and assassins in the sense that theyre a natural constant since before the dawn of time, it was just a thing because it was set during the crusades where these two factions existed. It's established in Origins that they're "founded" as such, and in Odyssey they dont even exist, because Odyssey is set before Origins. Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla are just a different direction in a game series that would become stale anyway, Unity got absolutely shit on and Syndicate was boring as fuck. I don't say Origins and the ones coming after are perfect, but people tend to hold the games from Assassins creed set in the americas (which were arguably bland too, and I remember people not liking the American revolution arc) and before in a ridiculously high regard, often blending in nostalgia in their assessment of the games. They were good, I've played every AC game since the first one, but I don't think theyre the epitome of assassin games
@hestvenn
@hestvenn 3 жыл бұрын
to add to the stealth aspect, I realise I was unclear, but it was useless in previous games because it took a longer time and was less efficient than just oneshotting people like you could do in direct combat. However, I can agree that this is the aspect where the game starts to diverge from, that you cant realistically clear a camp without getting spotted, because you typically cant oneshot a person (if theyre a grunt, yes, but not otherwise) in Origins and forward. And you cant oneshot someone in direct combat either. That's an issue they have to work out. I'm generally not in favour of dynamic levelling anyway, which I didnt like in especially Odyssey. If I put in the time to get to lvl 90 then I also want to feel like I'm lvl 90, so it feels dumb to go back to lvl 1 places and meet a lvl 90 guy
@hestvenn
@hestvenn 3 жыл бұрын
@Uncle Crispy I think the precursors being alive and well (although they are more like eternal beings through technology now) sort of makes sense and is a progression of how they've been worked into the story, but I do agree with you (I think?) that story wise, they couldve hold on to the mystery a bit longer and maybe not even revealed them at all, but have them work as a sort of looming factor in the overarching story. The writing in the AC universe isnt great considering what they have to work with. Speaking of Atlantis, I suspect you've played the DLC then, but I found it pretty disappointing that Kassandra essentially didnt give a shit that Hermes, Persephone, Hekate etc were actual beings and not myths lol. The Elysium DLC wasnt that great for that reason in my opinion. 2. Yea ok sure, I think the current system makes it more fluid in terms of what kind of assassin you want to be (ranged, stealth, warfare) but I think they currently have a problem adjusting the different builds and damages to cater to every type. I actually think it's a relatively good idea, it's just not implemented very well. Hope they make it better in upcoming releases or something. 3. When you say side missions, do you mean (if we take Odyssey as a recent example) the ones marked in blue and gold, or basically all of the side missions? Because the other one suck ass, but I think the main side missions are great. Shame you dont like it. It's a matter of taste I guess Although I didnt feel like I had difficulties progressing, I just did side missions because I wanted to

@Uncle Crispy Stealth in the Valhalla is far from useless and far more effective now. I'd say its the most balanced it has ever been. The ISU are a highly advanced race and this is explained. The "magic" is advanced technology from ISU which they (you) perceive as magic, same as the artefacts like the apple etc. The ISU arc is actually really cool and they are linking it all together now. They've brought back a lot of old AC elements (settlement upgrades, blending in, etc) and some new cool features like timed assassinations for hard targets and numbed down a lot of the arcadey feel (honestly this was what made the recent ones feel like a to do list) & character voices and that are worth listening to. It's still AC and Ubisoft but they've actually done a decent job I'm really enjoying the game.

So why do you think this series is incapable of retaining perfectly useful mechanics and ideas with each iteration? Valhalla after 30hrs is still kinda fun because i haven't seen it all yet..but it seems like a HUGE step back for the series mechanically.

People complain it because ubisoft still use name "assassins creed" to this game which basicly every element of assassins almost likes side mechanic instead core game. If ubisoft just name it "Creed" i think everyone will accept this game as sequel assassins creed (basicly new game) and maybe they will stop compairing it to old generetion.

@@littlehidan531 imo they'd be well able to establish a new franchise of time hopping demigods; it'd be a win all around, ubi would have two franchises with passionate fanbases, the ones that just want another rpg can stop complaining about the stealth and ac elements ubisoft dares to put in ac games, and the ones that actually like ac can get a game that's been made for them for the first time in years. there is literally no reason beside short term income not to do that but to instead turn ac into some mechanically lacking bog standard shit rpg other companies release regularly. it has nothing of what made ac unique once (social stealth came back and yay we got the hidden blade, but outside of forced segments and iconography, I think these games just don't feel like they were made as ac games - they clearly weren't #likeaviking my arse. either make a good viking game or make a good ac, not some chymera hybrid abomination.

Assassin's Creed sequels: one step forward, 357,000 steps sideways, 50 steps backward. AC is at its very best when you're traversing a historic metropolis, not when you're on a horse riding through the countryside. That was always the worst part of these games, riding from Florence to the villa for example. I don't want The Witcher 3 or God of War in my AC. It just detracts from what makes AC fun, to begin with, and in this case clearly even makes it actively worse. Give me Carthage in the first century AD, give me Rome at its peak. Give me fucking Cold War-era Berlin. Give me Nazi-occupied Paris. Give me 1700s Amsterdam. Don't give me the same shit other games can give me.

As soon as you play from Origins and up, you'll realize how much the quality in gameplay went down. I don't mind that AC is going in the RPG route, that's cool; however, NEVER EVER compromise gameplay mechanics. If it takes longer to implement detailed gameplay mechanics into an RPG environment, then by all means take the time to do so. But it looks like Ubishit just continues to pump out lazy games in the now dying AC franchise.

Gotta mention ladders in Thief and ladders in MGSV. In Thief I fondly remember standing over 3 or 4 aggro'd hammerites smacking at their heads with my blackjack as they clustered fruitlessly around a ladder. And in MGSV there's nothing like idling on a ladder while the search party chasing you, one by one, descends upon you, loses their balance, then falls to the ground, KOing themselves.

They didn't even fkng try in valhalla. What the actual fuck. I'd love them to actually develop AI behavior specific just for if you're sitting on a ladder doing nothing. Marksmen with pistols and rifles, or bows and arrows in the case of Valhalla I suppose, will shoot you down. Melee opponents will literally grab your foot and throw you off the ladder. AI coming down the ladder will kick you off, etc. Ubisoft reading this comment: Wait, that's illegal!
