Happy 2022!! New publishing day is SUNDAY, YAHOOOO! We’re so excited to join you on the weekends, when you hopefully have the time to kick back, relax, & enjoy some timelapses & kitten purrs! Don’t forget to let us know about YOUR insulation expirience! This comment section is SO helpful not only to us, but to those who are just beginning their van build journey! If you could give someone just starting their van insulation advice, what would it be??

Love your videos! On behalf of us who are dependent on the captions to understand these videos (Deaf or Hard of Hearing), could you please check how your captions are working…. Captions come across in two separate lines on the bottom of the video. For some strange reason the lines on your videos overlap! Hard to watch. Usually one would give up but the info you present is so good I don’t want to miss it! Thanks!

I LOVE THIS! This is the first video (and ive seen 100's) where someone did insulation like this. I have ADHD and all the stuff you were doing was "my thought exactly" and makes total sense to do it the way you did.. I was always curious as to why people didn't cover the metal support beams because that is direct contact with the outside metal of the van. Heat transfer is real lol. Thank you for such an informative video. I look forward to watching the other videos you have to see what I can learn. I will be building out by spring time!!

Will go back to your first vid to get up to date. Proper insulation and air circulation has a lot to do with comfort. Am told that insulating the floor properly is most important and requires special attention so am looking forward to how you will tackle that phase of your build. I like and respect minutia! Yep, great video!! Great use of multiple materials for different spaces. We winterized our van, and have successfully crossed Canada in the winter time this past month. Cabin temperature was always comfortable, however we had two days where the outside temperature was below -25C and our water pipes froze overnight. I’ll be very interested to follow along and watch what techniques you use to mitigate this problem! For us, it is mostly a problem of not being able to circulate the warm air of the heater effectively into the garage space near the water tank. Great video!
@mwilliams6664
@mwilliams6664 3 жыл бұрын
Is your piping all internal? And you still had problems with freezing? If so, how "closed off" is your garage (presumably this is where the freezing took place) from the main living space? Do you have any insulation on the pipes?
@xgouldiex
@xgouldiex 2 жыл бұрын
If your plumbing is in your garage split your diesel heater output so it puts some heat in the garage iv done it and it works great and it stops the damp in the garage and if your bed is over your garage it's great at night as it heats your mattress like a electric blanket and I also found I was keeping my heater lower as the heat was going straight to me in my bed

Hi Ladi & Margaret, Firstly, I love your channel & very much appreciate your excellent & informative videos. Secondly, the rigid board insulation you installed is PIR (polyisocyanurate), which is actually one of the *worst* insulation products to use in cold climates, despite its reported high R-value. Please allow me to explain... R-values are unfortunately determined at 75°F (24°C) and not across a broad range of temperatures. While most types of insulation actually *gain* R-value as the temperature drops, PIR is an exception: Its R-value plummets in cold temperatures! "As the temperature drops to 15°F (-9.4°C) the R-value decreases to approximately R-2, representing a significant 66% loss in R-value." There's a lot of marketing hype among insulation manufacturers, as they all compete for market share; so it's best to choose independent sources from the Building Science community who publish research papers on these topics. Understandably, most people don't have the time or patience to read a bunch of highly technical, PhD-level papers; so here's a decent synopsis comparing various types of rigid board insulation, like XPS, EPS, & PIR. There are other types of rigid board insulation which are not mentioned in the following article, but it's a good start and is an easy palatable read: "Most insulation products actually perform a bit better the colder it gets, but polyisocyanurate breaks that rule. As of about 15°C (59°F), its performance starts to deteriorate, and badly. By the time you get down to the -20s Celsius, it's nowhere near that. It can be a great product to use as long as you keep it warm, which is a really odd thing to say about an insulation product." www.ecohome.net/guides/2254/polyisocyanurate-foam-is-a-hot-new-building-product-learn-where-and-where-not-to-use-it/ ...or you could simply google: "cold weather performance of polyisocyanurate" I greatly respect both of you. Please do the right thing and inform your subscribers that PIR insulation should *not* be used in camper vans & other types of RVs, as it performs very poorly in cold climates, below 50°F (10°C). We all make mistakes-- it's no big deal. You have many subscribers though, who look up to you and follow your advice (and rightly so! You're both very inspiring!)... so please update this video so that others don't make the same mistake. I thank you and wish both of you all the best, always. ❤

You actually made me feel better about our insulation! We don't have all the equipment - just scissors, bread knife and box cutters to cut and a table. So we did pretty well. When we saw the spring sticks we both went 'oh dang! that would have worked'. We held the insulation sheets over our head (standing on a small step) until the glue took - that was a terror. Would have been worth paying the hardware store to rip a plywood panel for spring sticks if we'd thought it out!! And now that I see the kflex and how you were able to cut such precise panels, I see how you can aspire to use vapor barrier technology and lack of thermal bridging. Our van will just have to follow the good weather.

Yes came onto the comments to say this. I fitted a grey water camera, in fact exactly the same swivelling camera you have there, a few years ago and it took several iterations of the 3d printed mount to solve the problem of dirt blocking the lens. I eventually found that recessing the camera in a hemisphere 50mm deep, along with a 100mm deep 45 degree angled shield in front of it kept it clean the vast majority of the time. I’ve actually now bought another tiny camera from eBay with a built in water jet but that’s going to have to wait for every other possible job to be done. Great video as ever 👍

I like your videos as they show the technical side of things and attempt to explain why you do what you do. I believe many van builders would improve their build if they could simply use PIR insulation board with ply on top and fixed through to the van ribs. You lose a few inches of space but gain full insulation performance without the thin insulation on the protruding cold bridge areas. Same with the floor and celing, there is no need to use timber beams on the floor, simply lay PIR on the floor with some adhesive and then fix ply on top, fully insulated and no cold bridges or loss of insulation. Some areas will need support on areas like the edge of a step but you will not deform the floor once laid, it's the way 'floating floors' are laid and works well. Hope you like my ideas and good luck with the build. 👍
@ladiandmargaret

I strongly disagree with not using wood support on the floor. Pir foam would be very worn by the side door very shortly.

I insulated my van in exactly the same way! Used Kingspan but the flexible was Armaflex. I put 20mm Armaflex on she metal everywhere and then Kingspan on top of it. The idea was that when the Armaflex is glued to the metal it will stop condensation. Also used sheepswool but got it nearly for free from a farm. Do you know that they throw lots of it away when they have sheep only for meat? My bed will be in the roof and come down. No big garage. But I don’t have a supersexy electric megabike! :)

Great job, you’re definitely doing insulation right! I have a ‘mini-me’ Promaster City that is a work in progress. I have already insulated the floor and ceiling with expanded polystyrene foam ( 2 inches in the ceiling - R10, 1 inch on the floor- R5) This spring, the walls and doors will be next. All the best for 2022!

I guess the beauty of doing your own build, you can be as OCD as you want to be. After watching all the work that was put in to insulating this van, I think I will just get a 5 gallon bucket of ceramic insulation and then spray foam 2” over that. I think that should give me an R21 or something like that. In this coming April (Lord willing) I will be insulated my 26’ school bus.

S pozdravem Jean-Marc.

I'm really enjoying watching your van build, and learning some new things too. I really appreciate that you are showing all the detailed work. I hope to be starting my own van build soon. Although I don't have the access to the shop and tools that Ladi does, I'll still be able to make what I have work. I can't wait to see when your van is finished
