how is the technique for the basic as explained here different for the lead? Is it just the same but mirror in reverse?

what is the purpose of extending the leg first without moving the body with it at the same time? Why is the Zouk basic like that?

that's one of the things that makes Zouk Zouk! The long drawn out first beat is elongated through the extended leg (as opposed to stepping onto a bent leg for a short count like in salsa)

@@brandomiranda6703 yes, although the step doesn't physically need to be longer than the others, it should look slower - hence using the phrase "boom chick chick" - the boom is the long first beat.
