The history of the Western Region Government viz-a-viz the political rift between Chief Awolowo and Chief Akintola will be better understood when the biased and subjective recalls are truly narrated and recorded. It was unfortunate that the two men fell out politically. We can only hope that it was a leaning process for Nigeria and her citizens. The future is bright if we learn the lessons of history. Chief Obafemi Awolowo and I met in the USA during a visit. I was discussing with some friends, when Chief Awolowo called me, and asked, " Have you heard any news from Nigeria?" I said, " No sir!" He said, "The latest news from Nigeria is that Abiola has declined from the NPN" I then jumped up to congratulate him, since I have heard earlier that on rare cases that Chief Awolowo had no forgiving spirit against any opposition, and I told him, "Bad people have their moments, just as good people have theirs. If Chief Abiola comes to reconcile with you, try to accept him into your political fold." Chief Awolowo answered me thus: "Yes! I am very ready." Chief Awolowo then put his hand into his pocket and brought out a telegram copy which he forwarded to Chief Abiola from the USA. What was written in the telegram was not more than 5 lines. But I was surprised how the newspapers, especially the Daily Times, reported it to cover several pages of the newspapers, through analytical diagnosis. Hence the disagreement between Chief Awolowo and Chief Abiola were totally resolved before their separate translations.

If Jagarban had not allowed General Muhammadu Buhari to rule,he will not be ruling today.Chief MKO Abiola also betrayed some of his friends. The curse was placed by Oba Arole of first Oyo empire when he was fighting the Are Onakankanfo which lead to the lost of llorin to the Northern region. Dear Mr Dele Adeyanju i give you kudos for the historical issues you bring to your platform as they are very illuminating. I also give kudos to Alhaji Sukazeem for his enlightening stories of what went behind the scenes. I am not criticizing our Dear Alhaji but just adding my own little 2 cents as they say to two of the issues raised. I may be wrong but what i put up are in good faith hopefully will elicit more contributions to the discourse. The problem between the Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Late Ladoke Akintola was a problem of the leadership of the party in Western region. When Awolowo was the Premier he was the party leader but when Akintola became the Premier he wanted to be the leader not that Awolowo wanted to be the Premier. On the regional election in 1951 it was a parliamentary election and it was the party that has majority that will form the government. There were two main parties then AG, NCNC and Independent parties of which the main one was Ibadan Parapo led by the Late Chief Akinloye. The parties were to register their candidates before the elections but only NCNC did not submit its own list. There were 80 seats in the parliament of which 78 were contested and after elections AG won 38, NCNC won 24 and Independents including Ibadan Parapo won 15 seats. No party had majority to form a government. NCNC was claiming it won 43 seats without names of the said 43. Alliances were formed and 12 of the independents joined the AG and only 3 joined NCNC so at the end AG had 53 seats and NCNC 27 seats. There was no cross carpeting in parliamentary elections but alliances just as NPC and NCNC formed theirs in the Federal Parliament.
@larrykings_speak_out9 ай бұрын
You are not totally wrong or right. Baba Awolowo actually came back as party leader but like a godfather,whereas Baba Akintola wants a free hand to run his government. Awolowo has turned himself to a demigod that his words were final. Many things happened between their wives, too, which is still happening to date between an ex governor and his successor. About the 1951 election, it was cross carpet and not alliance because the party collapsed for AG.

The casual way of viewing politics is the bane of our progress and persist due to lack of understanding. Politics is not a LUDO!. Yes, in politics, you are not fighting with your political opponent, but you're contesting ideas. This is known to the educated people who engages in debate. Awolowo does not need to curse anyone. The daunting force that Awolowo intended to bring down, causing stagnation in our society, eventually brought Abiola down. Had he known?

I’ve said it severally, Awolowo was a great leader but his greediness caused so many things to Yoruba and Nigeria. God never sent Awolowo to become the leader of Nigeria, he sent him to become the leader of Yoruba. One of the reasons for the 1st coup by the Igbos is because of the flamboyant life styles of the corrupt leaders and the thought of removing Awolowo from prison and make him president which was never possible. The aftermath of coups led to Nigeria civil war, take it or leave it.. The civil war led to military staying in power for so long.

@@larrykings_speak_out you might be right. But if chief Awolowo had just been the Premier of Western Region without even trying to go to the central, events might have been different. But I believe those coupist really want Chief Awolowo as president. Remember they were young, wanted a revolution and they’ve all read what he said about Feudal system of the North, moreover few of them like Ifeajuna schooled in UI, they saw how they were fed in hostels(a chicken to a student in the late 50s). So those officers knew that the only best person for Prime Minister position was Awo.
