About the temple, it was built on a place where is believed that holy remains of St. Sava were burned by the Turks as a revenge for Serbian uprising in 1594. Building started in 1935. and were stopped 1941. with a WW2 and restarted in 1984 after Tito's death and decline of communism, during the 1990's it was stopped again because of the wars and sanctions only to be restarted again in 2002. Construction is mainly founded by donations but Serbia and Russia also financed parts of it. Lower level is done and it is a crypt and will be a burial place for Patriarchs of Serbian Orthodox Church. Those "pictures" are icons, pictures of saints. And what she said is wrong, women can be saints it is just fewer of them. Sveta Petka is one of more "famous" but there are others. And when you go inside of a church tradition is that you come to the icon that is on the pedestal cross and than kiss the icon. And about St. Sava, he was first Serbian enlightener or educator and founder of Serbian "branch" of Orthodox Church. In Orthodox church there are many "regional" churches so you have Serbian, Bulgarian, Russian, Greek etc. they are all Orthodox, basically more or less it is just regional division...

May I enrich your presentation on 2 issues..women Saints in the Holy Church is as normal as men Saints...Olga is equal to the Apostles... to note one...my grandma who raised me when I was a child is named Olga...an illiterate woman who knew the liturgy of the Church by heart...my first Saint... As for the regional Churches...not as exact as you've noted... The Russian Orthodox Church is over many countries... and the Greek Orthodox Church is in reality 4 patriarchates and 2 independent Churches... the Patriarchates cover the entire middle east and the independent Church is that of Cyprus...all founded by the Apostles themselves and except for Cyprus and Greece.. the mother 4 Patriarchates , Constantinople, Alexandria, Antiochias, and Jerusalem, cover many countries in the Middle East...

She didn't exactly explain it well Eric, but Ostrog is a monastery literally built into a side of a mountain xD, and the holiest of all places besides obviously Jerusalem, in Serbian/Greek orthodox religion, is Mount Athos (Света Гора) which is one of the so called "fingers" (peninsulas) of Greece, it is filled some of the oldest and grandest monasteries still in existence, the greatest for Serbian people being Hilandar that was founded by the very same "Saint Sava" (Свети Сава) that this monastery is named after. On Athos no women are allowed and I believe they only let a limited amount of tourists per day (including me back in 2012 I believe). I have to say, Athos is one of the most peaceful places in the world, I felt spiritually at peace, and remember that was coming from me at like age of 10, that wanted to play tag or some crap.

Yes, women can be saints, and can be painted on iconostasis, but they cannot be priests. The altar is the holiest part of the temple, and the priest leads the Liturgy (the Eucharist) and consecrates the Holy Gifts (The body of Christ) in it, for Holy Communion. All the saints on the frescoes are real people, and can be proven.

For "slava" every family has its own saints patron, or for archangel Michael for example its called "Aranđelov dan" (Archangel Day), for St. Nicolas its called "Nikolj Dan" (Nicolas Day), and for other saints for example St. George its called "Đurđev dan"(Georges Day), for St. Vitus its called "Vidov Dan" (Vitus Day and it has meaning also as Sight Day).... About Slava it's similar as Irish have St. Patrick day but we have around 30 well known and 50 less known and every saints holly celebration is like st. Patrick in popularity but in family home style and not in public places except the national holidays as "Vidovdan" cause of battle of Kosovo 1389, and "Savindan" cause its School Slava cuz St. Sava (Rastko Nemanyich) was our first Enlightener(educator) he wrote many "typikons" and educated all around him, he was prince, monk and at the end our first Archbishop and founder of Serbian Orthodox Church...for St. Nicolas Day(most dominant slava in serbs) its been believed that half of serbs praise and celebrate it and half of them are guests...

Thru decades church administration stole so much of money donation that we could built five temples like this so far. I remember more than 30 yrs ago my grandma always made a donation for St. Sava Temple, me and my family too amd many other people in every church in Serbia you could donate and it's still not done yet. While priests drive Audis,BMWs etc of 30 000+ euros. I am anti communist but blame communists in this case is total BS. Your grandmother donated change & that is your whole reasoning? Have you donated money your self? Do you go to church your self and do you donate money? I suspect people who repeat this stupid thing about priests driving expensive cars don't even go to church them selves. All the Orthodox priests I have known are the best people. They deal with so many human issues on a constant basis & also have to deal with the politics of the people. I wish they were driving around in Mercedes, but they are not.
