In the song “LADY” Fela criticised the use of White Western values and standards of feminine beauty in Africa. However to his detractors songs such as this are interpreted as anti-feminist or simply “macho”. To those who really knew him, he was never anti feminist as he was only saying African women have always made the decisions in African traditional homes, today’s African woman doesn’t need ‘feminist cause’ to be in-charge.
Fela’s endorsement of polygamy is not anti feminist as polygamy is not unique with African men. Europeans and European-Americans, who marry under Christian laws at the same time keep mistresses, are only being hypocrites. They should learn from Africans who keep all their women under one roof to avoid any ambiguity. This is why we say that the best way to celebrate Fela is to make his vision for Africa a reality. The search for the phenomenon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti can start from his legacy, the film BLACK PRESIDENT produced and personally financed by the afrobeat icon himself.
Principal shooting of the film was completed one day before the Nigerian Army soldiers attack on Kalakuta on 18th February 1977. The original sound-track was burnt in the inferno but thanks to my participation, knowledge of the film’s scenarios, evolution in technology today, plus the technical competence of my friend Olivier Van’l in a fantastic collaboration, we resynchronized the sound that was destroyed in the Kalakuta attack. Here is our modest attempt to give life to the film a challenge to the Nigerian (Nollywood) film industry!

I am so proud to learn the legacy of this great man Fela. I always knew his name as an African American born in New York but raised in Alabama and lived in Europe and became friends with Nigerian and Ghanaian friends for life. His music is great and I love how he love our Mother Africa. Yes, Africa is my home as well. I will be in Nigeria and will return again to Ghana.

This song gives me chills! The beginning of the end of the black family forever! Black Man please know that I am not your equal in no other sense than being a human being! I…black woman is your counterpart…not your equal! Thank you Mr Kuti for trying so hard to prevent the catastrophic condition of Black man and black woman relationships! Please Lord intervene and bring back the harmony of and organic nature of our people! Thank you again…Mr Fela Kuti! ♥️

well done sir, looking forward to seeing the reconstruction of other salvaged parts of the film, always a thing of sadness for me that this film which documents the life, the man, the legend and the genius in the music was destroyed in that unfortunate incidence.

Thank you for this video. I do disagree with your description. Fela was rather vocally un/anti-feminist. His other music like Mattress and Shakara Oloje attest to this. As do his real life opinions that men ought to dominate women captured in several interviews with him.

"To those who really knew him, he was never anti feminist as he was only saying African women have always made the decisions in African traditional homes, today’s African woman doesn’t need ‘feminist cause’ to be in-charge." Your attempt to rewrite history is shameful. This is an anti-woman song and you should be honest enough to leave it at that. Fela was a great entertainer and artiste but he was also a man who was FLAWED and that should also be part of his history. The things he said in this song were the things men and society said back then. Today, we know better, well, let me rephrase this and say, some of us know better. I am a man, once famous and someone who was there when Fela died and covered his burial and broadcast it to the rest of Lagos and most of Western Nigeria as far as our transmitter could reach. I did shows with him and his sons and Dede know who I am. I cook and wash the DISHES in my home and yes, I have a spouse and I do not see my doing chores as less than! Your line about African women making decisions in the traditional African home is also not true as none of the women who lived with Fela himself made any decisions in his home! Just saying....

You're right on some things and not right on others... He merely differentiated Western Woman with African man,and How Colomentality charged our African women to start behaving like Western women

@@louisotieno4712 Which is the same backward mindset I have talked about. What is appropriate about how we as men treat women in Africa? Why would you want to hold on to such abusive and regressive practices. That in 2020, we are still talking about Western women and African men is nothing but a shame if you do not understand this. Whether you are African or western, you are human first and foremost, what makes the difference is, the rest of the world is moving towards an existence in which every human being whether male or female gets to live a life of full POTENTIALS , instead I am having to respond to the merits of treating women as less than. Until you realize, women whether in Africa or outside Africa deserve respect from you as human beings, you are no better than Fela and his treatment of women, period and again, Fela was dead wrong from start to finish!

african women in my culture are very important. they are head of the house while doing household chores and all. they also call family meetings and all. i think western ideas are what set africa back because the way they treated women are horrible. this is why we have ideals about virginity and all this other stuff

@@empoweredbimb0 You have not told me which African culture you are referring to so I will not address your contention. I spoke about the Fela I knew and the culture he endorsed in his own household, period!
