Entire video explanation 1) Black Horseman in a White Desert - This signifies the poster for New Mexico Gaga saw before the accident. He may also signify Death or her body luring her deeper in her mind. 2) The Red Mask - This is the blood from the accident. 3) Bike with Pomegranates - The first real element in Gaga's vision. Most probably the victim of the collision. Pomegranates simultaneously signify life and death. 4) The Red Anklet - Gaga's broken foot in real life. 5) Walking to the White Chapel - This is the movie poster Gaga saw. This can also signify the deepest recesses of her mind, protecting her from trauma. 6) Pillow Man - Another victim of the accident who crashed on his steering wheel. 7) Black Girl in Blue - The first spectator to the accident. Most likely the one who called 911. 8) Two Yellow Men Holding a Door - These are two firemen holding the car door to get Gaga out of the mangled vehicle. Their hats have '911' written on them in roman numerals. The yellow men were blindfolded because the firemen wore black goggles. 9) Woman Holding a White Body - A woman holding a victim who got hit by the car. The white body even has red lace signifying blood. 10) Additional Three People in Blue - Additional spectators filming the whole thing. 11) Yellow Man Mixing a Cauldron - This is a fireman and a smoking car wreckage. 12) The arab Guy in Black and the Black Mary in White - These are the paramedics trying to save Gaga's life. 13) The Spinning Umbrella - The paramedics descending via a helicopter. 14) The Purse with the Picture of the Doll - This signifies the pills that would have made her stable. Did she cause the accident? 15) The arab/medic Guy Strangling the White Mummy - The paramedic was checking for a pulse. 16) The Black Mary Covering the Pillow Man with a Sheet - This was the paramedic covering the victim with a thermal blanket. 17) A Man with Dog Ears whose Face is Being Covered by the Latin Man - The paramedic giving oxygen to one of the victims. 18) The Black Mary Flashing a Mirror on Gaga - The paramedic was flashing her flashlight on Gaga's pupil's looking for consciousness. Gaga in the dreamscape is her consciousness. 19) Gaga Floating Away with a Rose - This signifies Gaga's consciousness/life leaving her body. She was even wearing a halo. 20) The arab Guy Pulling Her with a Rope - The paramedic gave her CPR. You can even see a brief flash of the real world as she comes crashing down. 21) The Rope - It was the tourniquet used on Gaga's foot. 22) arab man/medic guy and Gaga Mouth-to-Mouth Action - This was CPR, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. 23) Yellow Man on Ladder Sprinkling Rose Petals - This is a fireman repairing the movie sign. The petals were sparks. 24) Men in Blue Masks - These are policemen. They even have the bird sign in their hats. 25) The Blue Streamers Waving in the Wind - This was the fire hydrant spewing water. 26) The Peacock - This represented Armenia in the Armenian Film Festival signage. 27) The Black Mary Holding a Snake - This is the snake in the cross logo of the paramedics. 28) Gaga in Yellow Spasming - This is Gaga's body rejecting the medication/treatment. 29) The Mural - This was the scene of what really happened. Gaga is now getting closer to surfacing to reality. 30) The arab/medic Guy Touching Her Heart Area - The paramedic giving her heart pumps and CPR. 31) Gaga in Black Floral Outfit - This is Gaga being put in a full-body brace. The curtain also might have fallen in the background to signify her impending death, the body bag. This is why, as a last-ditch effort, the paramedics used the defibrillator. 32) The Box - This is the defibrillator. 33) The Virgin Sacrifice - As dream world and real world collide, the vision concludes in a terrifying sacrificial scene as the pain comes rushing in. It's interesting that the knife that kills her in the dream world is the current of electricity that brings her to life in the real world. 34) 'I didn't have my pills!' - This suggests that she caused the accident because she wasn't stable because she did not have her medication. 35) LG Advertisement - 'Life is good.' Here’s an explanation for the music video for anybody who doesn’t understand: before the video starts she is presumably biking down a road, and because she wasn’t on her anxiety pills, starts thinking of self hating thoughts, and she drives her bike into traffic to kill herself. When she wakes up in the music video starting, she sees the images of what she saw around her when the accident happened, but they all have a deeper meaning, the black horse is death, which she follows to the town. There she sees the guy hitting his head on the pillow ( the guy hitting his head on the airbag ) and the person who is mouthing the first two lines is a witness to the accident. Gaga tries to brush off what she is saying, and the paramedic guy and girl appear. The guys dressed in yellow are firefighters. The woman holding her baby in the fantasy was the woman holding the hurt (or dead) person in the street. When she goes up and is rising, that is her ascending to heaven, but the paramedic pulls her back down and is trying to revive her. His mouth open represents mouth to mouth resuscitation. Her hand shaking next to the painting of the accident I believe represents a seizure from a concussion that was represented by the red blindfold she wore at the beginning of the video. And him grabbing her ankle is him putting that device on her ankle to I think stabilize it. And when she’s crying on the gurney at the end before the reality cut, she is almost revived and she’s starting to feel the pain both from the accident and the mistake she just made. The knifes represent the defibrillators, and when they are stabbed into her heart, it cuts to them giving her a second round in real life, and she wakes up in both physical and emotional pain, saying I didn’t have my pain pills. And crying because of the pain and what she just did. She comes to the realization that she doesn’t want to die, and the LG ad is a bit of irony because it means life’s good, when she literally just caused an accident trying to kill herself in traffic. She said this is her most personal music video since marry the night and while it is very confusing at first, after you watch it a few times it starts to sink in as to how serious the video really is and what it is really about.

In short she is having a N.D.E Near Death Experience.

1) Pop a 911 refers to Popping an anxiety pill that gets referred to as "911" 2) The song is an upbeat pop song about battling one's addiction to anxiety medication and trying to stabilise mental instability. I.e My biggest enemy is me, pop a 911. 3) This song video is a reference to an obscure Armenian film called The Colour of Pomegranates. Hence the Pomegranates and also a lot of symbolism matches those found in that film. 4) They were not Mexican references but Armenian references. Hence why they flash a sign that says Armenian film festival. 5) The part where Gaga is in green and flying refers to when her life is leaving her body but the paramedic resuscitated her and brought her back down. That's why the halo on her head is not above her head because she's not left her body yet. The flower she carries as well was white and fresh when she floats but once she descends back, notice how it wilts. 6) The woman in the white garb with the long haired man is the other medic on the accident site. Note the red cross symbol. And the snake in the universal logo for medicine is referenced constantly. 7) The end proves that Gaga perceives the world in a colorful and fantasy based manner. That's why everything she saw before she became unconscious was interpreted by her mind the way we saw it. Another theory is that she perceived them that way because she was not on her pills. the pills "normalise" her so without the pills, everything is perceived by her is magical and artistic. 8) Also, in 2011, Gaga wore teal hair and said she wears teal when she wants to portray her fantasy side.and goes back to blonde when she's portraying reality. Notice how she's teal haired when she's in the fantasy dream in 911 but in the accident scene she's blonde. 9) LG could be a sponsor but it's also what the fans call her. LG stands for Lifes good and for Lady Gaga. Hope this helps

You dont see oxygen tubes in her and irl it is not enough to rescuscitate someone who is dying. You intubate them, not put nasal cannulas. And gaga was careful with that detail.

Gaga was the one who caused the accident that's why she is saying "I'm sorry", it was because she forgot to take her antipsychotics (You can hear her say "I didn't take my pills") and then suicidal thoughts began to be in her mind, the first thing that occurred to her was to cross through traffic to try to get run over. However she doesn't die and when she wakes up she begins to say "I don't want to die" showing her regret, she also asks if someone died and then starts saying "i'm sorry" The video has a LOT of things to analyze and references, it is too long to explain, you can search for a thread on Twitter or something and you will understand better.

@@Sophieg359 That also confused me at first, and I saw different theories and I think basically she did take the pain pills and she did not wanted to admit it (This may also explain why during the video she seems to be making the sign of taking pills) or she just didn't take the antipsychotics and she just said that. She may also just had a very strong attack, suicidal thoughts were too much and the antipsychotics no longer worked for her (I think this is the most possible theory) What I am sure of is that she caused the accident.

My favourite scene is when she is “flying to heaven” as she is dying. I was so happy you showed watching it twice! Because it's impossible to catch everything in the first watch. I had to watch it twice as well and you picked up on a lot of what I did too the second time. The guy hitting his head on the red pillow is mimicking hitting his head on the steering wheel/air bag during the crash, the Jesus figures, who also plays the paramedic, was pulling her back down to the ground because she wasn't ready to ascend to heaven OR it was her 'fall from grace" which is playing into the "My biggest enemy is me, pop a 911." But yeah, the whole concept of her in the desert is her hallucination as her brain is trying to process the trauma of the crash and she's using all the things she saw before she blacked out subconsciously as she pulls out of her unconsciousness. The red ankle bracelet is also a metaphor for the ankle injury obviously, the red cross is a metaphor for first aid, the mirror is a flashlight in her eyes checking her pupils, and so on. There are so many little tid bits and so much religious iconography. It's really freaking amazing how this was done.

In the video she did not take her pills, and while she was riding her bike, self-hating phrases started to destroy her mind so she just drives to the traffic whit her eyes closed, that's why she asks if anybody died, she probocated the accident because of her mental illness, and at the end she realizes that she doesn't want to die, is just that she is fighting whit the illness :(

This is a solid interoperation. Theres also other layers and lenses which could shift the meaning of this work. E.G. Gaga's face covering is also the blinders we put on in our reality, there is no way to see the magical realm she's about to enter. She was only able to enter it when she took off that shroud and arguably detached from her flesh body in our world. Notice how she's able to ascend into the sky, and get people to do things (such as the woman who starts singing her lyrics until Gaga raises her hand). As Gaga is about to reach the next realm/ afterlife, we in this realm repeatedly try to bring her back, despite it not being in her interests. At the end when they all convene and forcibly kill her chances of finding what seemed like divine peace, she screams and mourns the reality that she must go back to...this reality. I'm missing a lot but this is such a beautiful piece of work and love that there's so many ways to analyze it.

She explained how this song is actually about an antipsychotic medication named olanzapine that saved her life in relation to mental illness (my biggest enemy is me, pop a 911) when she was rushed to the E.R due to a psychotic break. The same thing happened to me and I had to be put on the same exact medication, she stated in an interview how her whole body went numb, she could do nothing but scream. Its terrifying and nobody should ever have to experience a psychotic break, it is absolutely horrifying and indescribable when you’re completely ripped from reality, feeling like you’re trapped in an endless void, you feel like everything is out to hurt or kill you, becoming completely and absolutely emotionally blunted unable to express any feelings, completely dissociated from reality, unable to come to terms with or make any sense of anything or anyone around you, completely lost, everything you ever thought was ever real, completely fades out of existence. There is truly nothing more traumatic than a psychotic break. Recovery time is different for everyone, it can take as little as 1 week to over a year. I am just happy I survived and am still alive to inform people and share my experience about this grave and perilous state of mind, to let people know how crucial mental health actually is. I really hope this experience and explanation serves more insight into the true meaning of the video ❤️

Here’s all of the references I’ve understood after watching The Color of Pomegranates, Memories of Sayat Nova, El Topo, and reading other’s interpretation. 1. That guy in black riding on a horse (ref. to El Topo) represents darkness, vices, and trauma. 2. The guy banging his head, in The Color of Pomegranates (TCP), means pleading or communicating to God. So basically he was pleading for his life. 3. The covering of the body with blanket in TCP means that body is now dead 4. The weird doll cocoon in the woman’s arm in TCP means a trapped body. 5. The woman with the weird old doll cocoon ressemble Pieta which in the Bible happened when Mary was grieving to Jesus’ body but nobody help her because of their fright to the Roman Soldiers. Basically it’s like white privilege - nobody cares about their life and even the fireman and paramedics don’t help them. 6. The woman in blue robe in TCP means a hypocrite and a bystander - she only watches and doesnt’t do anything. Gaga basically saying that there are people who knew her mental regression but they don’t care. 7. The woman in white dress, in TCP that dress is worn when a woman is about to be wed. They wear it to conceal their body for them not to tempt men to sin. It is like a parallelism to society nowadays that women should limit themselves like they can’t wear skin-exposing clothes for them to not tempt men to rape them or molest them - patriarchy in a nutshell. 8. The weird spiky accessory that Gaga was wearing was very similar to an apparatus used in trepanation (an inhumane and old psychiatric procedure). 9. The silver ball on the water is reference to Yayoi Kusama’s Narcissus World. Yayoi Kusama has been suffering mental illness since child. 10. The scene where Gaga was floating is reference to a movie 8 1/2 where the protagonist was ambitious, unsympathetic, and sad. 11. The white peony symbolizes regret from holding a grudge. 12. The policemen in the dream version were wearing a weird headdress, in Memories of Sayat Nova, those headdress are worn by the guards of Gulag who imprison homosexuals, Christians, sinners - basically Gaga was saying that those policemen were evil. 13. In the sacrificial cult thing, the dress she was wearing was a part of Alexander McQueen’s collection called Highland Rape - the destruction of woman’s body, soul, and mind Feel free to add. The only person to really understand the symbolism in the video. I'm glad video was made in a way the there can be a simple meaning... what this video was. Omg the reality was her dream state its the symbolism of them. Then you have your explanation where you go into the deeper symbolism of the video. The avant-garde symbolism and cinematography that was all inspired by The Color of Pomegranates. The repetitive motions, of simple everyday movements. Shown in a new way. The outfits and framing of the scene and the use of the same symbols from top. The seashell, the golden hand of christ, the Pomegranates which all represent blood and life. Her ankel bracelet is made of pomegranates which represents her injury. The use of the lace and rugs are very pivotal in the color of pomegranates. There is also some Mexican themes, her black outfit is decorated in the style of day of the dead.

And the theatre that says "Armenian Film Festival" at the end. Sergei Parajanov was a Soviet-Armenian film director, screenwriter and artist of Armenian descent who made significant contribution to world cinema with his films Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors and The Color of Pomegranates. So much respect for Gaga, she’s showing us a beautiful story. The Color of Pomegranates is a poetic treatment of the life of 18th-century Armenian poet and troubadour Sayat-Nova. It has appeared in some polls as one of the greatest films ever made. I recommend everyone watching this masterpiece! 💜

What attracts me in the video is the metalinguistic sense of it, mainly in the last scene, where we see everything happening with distance, the cinema on fire... reminds me of The OA Parte 2 final scene.
