Alejandro lyrically represent one of Gaga’s fears/monsters- as do the other 7 songs from her The Fame Monster EP (2009) - it represents the fear of men. the song is multilayered but it’s basically her saying goodbye to her past boyfriends and accepting the pain of living without her true love. the video on another note kind of deflects from the song itself and shows Gaga’s relationship with her friends that are part of the lgbtq+ community (she’s been an activist for the cause since the beginning of her career) and also her struggle to find a partner. the video touches on subjects that were pretty sensitive at the time, for example: the video makes a comment on the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy (which allowed gay, bi or transgender people to serve in the military as long as they stayed “in the closet” and prohibited openly gay, bi or transgender people from serving in the military). DADT was repealed one year later. the music video also caused a lot more of controversy because of its religious imagery such as swallowing a rosary and the inverted crosses. it wasn’t the intent though, as Gaga herself wanted to represent a battle between the forces of light and dark, hence the black and white outfits. Gaga did smoke for a very long time and only recently this year she decided to quit cold turkey, even though she still regularly smokes weed cause it helps on her fibromyalgia. as for the haircut she’s known for changing her style from day to day so it’s a wig she used for the video although during the promo for this video and album she kept a dark visual with a very pale skin red lips and a lot of dark outfits.

This song and video have mutiple deeper meanings, like most of Gaga's work. It's about the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy in the military, about her criticizing her religion (Christianity, Catholicism) for not (fully) accepting the LGBTQ+ community and everything around it, about her close relationship with LGBTQ+ people, about her fear of men and about not being able to find the right partner in her life. This video was very controversial at the time because of the religious symbolism. She was accused for blasphemy, which was not her intention.

I'd like to add that many gay men who are religious or want to be close to God have been groomed to believe that homosexuality is sin. Therefore they marry females, not to hurt them or embarrass them; but out of fear that God may rebuke and hate them. My father was one of them, and although he betrayed my mother, she understood how trapped and in pain he was. How he was forced by his parents to marry a women and bear children and although I know he loves my mother very much still, the hurt and anxiety he felt throughout his whole life was too excruciating to deal with any longer. They're still very close and love each other, but It's heartbreaking because religion IS a beautiful thing, but like anything else, it's destroyed by the horrible people who run it. I feel like that's what this song and music video is referring to.

Also if you have a bit of time read this from Gagapedia.com With this particular song, she stated "I'm saying goodbye to all my past boyfriends..". In an interview, Gaga said that each of her songs written for The Fame Monster were all influenced by a monster. The monsters all take place in each song; for example, "Alejandro" was influenced by her "Fear of Men Monster". She confirmed this monster in an interview On the Record with Fuse. In the song, 'Alejandro' represents Alexander McQueen, 'Fernando' represents Fernando Garibay, one of the producers she worked with on the album and for The Monster Ball Tour, and 'Roberto' represents Rob Fusari, an old producer and ex-boyfriend. The lyrics talk about Gaga defending herself against a "harem" of Latin men and has a number of ABBA allusions, including a reference to their 1976 song "Fernando", which Gaga cited as one of her influences.

TFM is her best album (imo) with Alejandro as my fave song + music video. I feel that the concept of different types of fear was well executed and ALL songs are well curated and are 'single' worthy. BTW comes close in second and i'm glad that you have covered quite a bit in your other reviews, which i really appreciate because tbh i haven't revisited her older songs/classics in a long while and i was introduced to your videos via your reaction video to ROM. It's really a domino effect where your views made me 'revisit' Gaga's masterpieces in a different light and appreciating them through a different perspective. I do love her other albums as well and it would be great if you're able to cover ARTPOP too. Not to mention, i believe anticipation for Chromatica helps to everyone to tide over this trying period and i will certainly be looking forward to your review(s)(be it individual songs or album). Most importantly, keep doing what you're doing and welcome to the Gaga universe lil Monster :)

I always thought of the video as more of a visual representation of the feeling of the song. Her relationship with men in love and sex is a dance of war. It's cold, dark, and grey, there's a power struggle, it's a beautiful dance but also a weapon. She's both watching over from above as a ruler, and down below struggling and fighting. They're stripped back, raw and vulnerable.
