What an amazing find! Are there like procedures when discovering a new cave like this? Do you have to do like a geological survey and will it have to be put on the some government cave list?
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker 11 ай бұрын
Yes. And a cave like this is so sensitive that the decision-making process is slow. Currently the only people that know about it are the senior members of the caving group and a few of our friends that we just wanted to tell. We took a group in for mapping and generally looking at the cave. It's such a spectacular cave it will require some protection. Fortunately it's already on protected land, so it's not going to get bothered much. Probably doesn't need a gate because it's difficult to find or get into. It's also high enough elevation where it's going to be snowed in almost all year. And the hike is pretty long. So it's sufficiently hidden from the casual hiker or even the casual caver.
@CalvinHikes
@CalvinHikes 11 ай бұрын
*It may take some time to put on a government list because currently the government doesn't know it exists and that might be a good thing. We do work in conjunction with the government, but the cavers will know what's best for the protection of the cave. If a cave is not on state land we can apply for a "significant natural discovery." Which offers special protections. This one is going to play out slow because it's about one week from being snowed in until probably next July.

@@EvenDarker I'm just catching up on this amazing channel this is one huge discovery. I'm in no way a caver I doubt I'll ever do it but you, Jacob and a team really need to go back down here and search all areas. I understand it could be a several part series for your channel but as an non caver I'm excited to see the outcome of this tremendous discovery.

Of all the Mysteries we've uncovered, this was by far the most shocking. Given its location size and beauty. It was a complete surprise. Within the caving community in our area, this is a pretty big deal. It'll account for several videos. We have some with Jacob exploring, some with the whole team. Some low crawls.... but mostly this is a big, beautiful cave!

I think it would have been more fun if I wasn't alone in the cave and also if we were prepared for it. This was such a surprise I only partially believed what was happening. Every other large cave anywhere near here was discovered in the 60s or 70s just by people walking around the obvious entrances. This one vented through a hole too small for a human. Just a wild discovery

Beautiful! How old is this cave? When was it formed? Since these are lava tubes, when does the eruption date from? Sure would love to see more of this cave. Would like to see a lot more. This looks big enough to conceivably get lost in, especially with the frequent divergences in the tunnels and the side tunnels.
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker 11 ай бұрын
We'll have several more videos from this cave. This lava area had most of its caves developed only about 2,000 years ago. So it's very "young." But the volcano the caves sit on is VERY active. It erupts occasionally. I've seen it erupt catastrophically twice. And this cave is the closest cave to that volcanic vent. I mean it is right on the mountainside. So the cave is quite steep and, much as we know about caves we weren't sure that Lava Tubes could develop at that steep of a pitch. It's quite extraordinary. Everyone here is very excited about it.

Wow , this is an amazing find , I appreciate that you’re filming so I can enjoy it’s beauty without going there. Thank you so much . How does it work for naming the cave ? Is it your group that found it that will name it ? Also , from my point of view of someone who knows nothing about caves , it looks like a gigantic maze , and seems to be endless !!
@EvenDarker
@EvenDarker 9 ай бұрын
It does get kind of mazy. Big caves usually don't but this one has what we call braided passages. They overlap and overlay each other and it gets a little confusing. Generally the person who finds a cave has rights to name the cave. But in the case of a big cave like this, the naming responsibility is shared by our little caving group. We all pretty much work as a team, so cool discoveries are shared.

Yes. One of my favorite things about Lava Tubes is how they sometimes look like HR Geiger's art. Which was the art that inspired the look of the aliens movies. This cave in particular has a lot of very alien like structures. But, it's the earth! The Earth is cool.

I like discovering caves. And recently we found another BUGE one that I was really happy to find. But this one... being such a big cave that, when the news got out, it became kind of a point of contention within our caving club. Decisions have to be made about big caves like whether we're going to tell others about it... if we're going to gate it... even what the name will be! Nothing was easily agreed on. But that first dark day was really something. It is the best discovery of the last 50 years.

@@EvenDarker that’s so awesome man and thanks for replying back with the great story! Can’t wait to see some new footage of the new cave you found. It is lava rock. Basalt at this point. But this is formed of molten magma, spewing out of a local volcano. It creates a metallic Sheen sometimes if it is superheated. It also reacts to sediment over time, changing the colors of the rocks. Yellow red purple... all colors seen in lava tubes.
