The Balkans have the best history in my opinion. People talk about war crimes and such forgetting what UK, France, Italy and Germany (literally birthed fascism and Nazism), Japan, China, Korea, India, USA (built upon genocide of natives) did. Balkans are just so amazing when you see at how small they are and what fierce characters were birthed there. I was even surprised when I read that 17 Roman emperors were born in what today is Serbia. Amazing.

She also cared for and put through school many more children, around 20 if I am not mistaken including a son of Bulgarian officer she captured during the war. As for her life after the war, it kind of makes sense, Serbia really had many war heroes and veterans after the war and with creation of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes country was in constant political struggle and Serbia was in ruins economically and in population, there were entire towns and villages without any living adult males. And she wasn't really educated so she couldn't get some better job, that is why she put all those kids through school.

She was actually arrested by the local collaborators and sent to Banjica Concentration camp where they probably planned on executing her.... But one of higher ranked German officers stationed there recognized her, got really pissed, orderers the collaborators to let her go and salutes her as she was going out of the camp.... And the reason why she was arrested.... She told the collaborators to fuck off when they told her to come to a party attend by the enemy

When I listened through the album this song is from I was very excited to hear songs like "Stormtroopers" "Unkillable Soldier" "Soldier of Heaven" and such, when I got to the middle/back half of the album however I encountered my 3 favorite songs from the album itself in a row, Race to the Sea, Lady of the Dark & The Valley of Death. Lady of the dark I find especially catchy and its a perfect example of why I love listening to Sabaton because I got to know a little about a person I had never heard about before, which then of course led to me looking her up and I'm glad I did. Her story is interesting and inspirational and also rather sad at the same time.

She's not the only war hero who became a a janitor, the US Air Force academy cadets had no idea their school janitor was Medal of Honor award winner William J. Crawford. It was only when a cadet was reading up a history book and noticed the name of the local school janitor when they realized he was the figure mentioned in the history book. Eventually of course Mr Crawford confirmed the story and was officially presented his MoH by President Reagan.

As a Serbian, I'm honored and thankful you reacted to this, she is a great heroine to our people, to add a bit info and correct some things in the video: 1: it was Bulgarians she captured with bombs, she was wounded several times, Iron regiment was our elite unit and she was part of it, little bit info about Iron regiment, they were chosen soldiers, best soldiers taken from different units and put together, they were always first to charge and lead the attack they lost 17 commanding officers during the war. Correction: Serbia didn't have a brigade but an army 100 000 men that manged to retreat and it wasn't Italian front but Macedonian front (also called Salonika front) in Greece where Serbian army fought together with allies from 1916 til 1918. It's sad thing we didn't treat our veterans right after WW1, and it took communists to award her pension and housing. Anyway much thanks for this I have watched your channel for years now and I'm so happy you finally reacted to something Serbian. I would recommend also a song by Sabaton called "Last Dying Breath" it's about Serbian defense of our capital Belgrade in 1915. ps: btw there were other women in Serbian army she wasn't the only one, but there was also a British woman serving in Serbian army and fighting on the front her name was Flora Sandes and I think she was the first female officer in WW1 she ended the war with the rank of captain and also bears Serbian highest military decorations. And another great story I know is about American surgeon called Edward Ryan who saved our wounded soldiers and civilians in Belgrade, when Germans entered the city in 1915 many fled to the hospital he was in charge of, Austrians wanted to kill the wounded soldiers but doctor Ryan went to the hospital roof and put an American flag there making Austrians know that hospital was now American territory and in so doing he saved hundreds of our men from certain death.

Fun fact, half of the video is from US embassy in Serbia commercials that have been running in Serbia recently. Everything where she is in, rest is from an Serbian movie. Why would US embassy do it? Well to heal relations, trying to depict how enemies can become fiends since we had war some 23 years ago and lots of Serbs don't want to forget that. Best thing depicting it would be one that is not in this, depicting Milunka before WW2 when Bulgarian general I think sent a son to study in Belgrade and to live at woman that captured him during WW1. Mulunkas daughter and him ended up married so showing how even enemies can get together.

5:30 the unit in question is 2nd Morava Regiment 1st ban "Knyaz Mihailo" nicknamed "The Iron Regiment" since its daring night bayonet attack on the Ottoman positions on Oblakov heighs during the 1913. battle of Monastir (during the 1st Balkan War). Morava is a river in Serbia. The mobilization system in Serbia divided the country into 5 divisional areas most named after prominent rivers flowing through them and each responsible for raising 4 regiments of 1st ban (recruits aged 21-31), 4 regiments of 2nd ban (recruits aged 32-37) and 3 regiments of 3rd ban (recruits aged 38-45). 1st ban units were generally the best equipped (Serbian version of Gewehr 98 rifle, full uniform, more attached machineguns and artillery). She was simply drafted in the 2nd regiment based on her home Village, Koprivnitsa, being in the area from where the 2nd regiment recruited its soldiers and the fact that she was in her 20s. There were no dedicated elite units in Serbian Army, just those that happened to distinguish themselves with merit. 2nd regiment was certainly one of them.

Yarn Hub and Sabaton did another collab video for this song and I love its opening. (Or it might've just been Yarn Hub making a video on her.) In short, theres a ceremony honoring WW1 veterans. The soldiers are swaping war stories, but they quiet down when this "little old lady" walks by and sits down with them in the section reserved for soldiers. One of them asks who she is, at which point she opens her coat to reveal a chest covered in all her medals. The soldiers then apologizes, saying meant no disrespect, then asks her to tell him her story.

it is not realy elite squadron of the army. It is regular unit. The story goes that in balkan war her regiment (2nd Regiment of Morava Division) is nikcnamed by Bulgarian army who couldnt defeat them in several attacks with the nickname "iron regiment". That regiment actualy allreday had nickname "Count Mihailo" but since then it was more known as a Iron Regiment. At the end of ww1 it was most decorated unit in Serbian Army as a unit and counting by number of decorated soldiers.

The story about not killing when she didn't have to comes from her directly. She said in one of the interviews a few years before she passed away that on one occasion Bulgarians launched an attack to Serbian positions. They all started shooting but she realized that something was wrong with the enemy soldiers. They were all pissed drunk. So she stopped shooting and urged her comrades to do the same. Remaining Bulgarian soldiers that reached the Serbian trenches surrendered. Turned out that Bulgarians didn't want to fight and their morale was low. So their officers got them drunk, pumped them up with a speech and sent them over the edge to their deaths. How unaware they were of what was going on can be seen from her quote "they were stumbling, screaming and singing. Some of them were just wandering around the no man's land. They didn't look like men and soldiers, they looked like a lost flock of sheep. I could no longer do it, I could not shoot at drunk people".

Milunka Savic was a real-life Wonder Woman deserving of every accolade possible and Sabaton did an amazing job showing her story in this video. As a Serbian woman this video actually brought tears to my eyes. One of the reasons that Milunka's story stayed unknown for so long was due in part to the communist regime that took over Yugoslavia after WW2 that chose to not recognize war heros from WW1 and WW2 in order to not stir up nationalistic sentiment in the new Yugoslavia where there were multiple ethnicities that had previously had strained relations in the past.

9:08 Serbian army in 1914 had 11 infantry divisions 1 cavalry division and 15 3rd ban regiments and a few thousand "last defence" fighters. In early 1916 after the occupation of Serbia by the Central Powers and the difficult retreat of the remnants of the Serbian army through Montenegro and Albania to the Adriatic where the Entente navies took them to Corfu to recuperate and then to Salonika to re-join the fight on the Macedonian Front the Serbian Army had 6 infantry and 1 cavalry division, maintaining those formations until the end of the war (bans were mixed by then). Milunka did not fight on the Italian front in the latter part of the war (no Serbian Army units did) but on the Macedonian front (there were some Italian units fighting there).

In an interview a Serbian author about a book on Milunka Savic ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2m2kK14hptsr6s&ab_channel=MilanBogojevi%C4%87 at 17:25) states that Milunka (technically) did capture 26 Bulgarian soldiers in a single occasion at Salonika Front (AKA Macedonian Front) and gives details as follows: Since the trenches were fairly close in some places and Serbian and Bulgarian languages are similar enough to allow basic communication, Serbian and Bulgarian soldiers talked to each other, and sometimes traded too. In one conversation a Bulgarian soldier indicated to Milunka that he and 25 other soldiers would like to surrender but they are afraid of their officer. I suspect the reasons for the willingness to surrender had something to do with the increasingly inadequate food rations in the Bulgarian army as the war dragged on - a consequence of having such a large % of population in uniform affecting food production. The Entente powers, on the other hand, with their huge colonies, command of the sea and willingness of USA to sell them stuff on credit had no such problems. So Milunka and the war weary Bulgarian soldiers hatched a plot for her to, at an opportune moment, distract the Bulgarian commanding officer with talk of HER fake willingness to surrender until the defecting Bulgarian soldiers could sneak across the no man's land. They went on with it but, after some time the officer noticed the defecting soldiers crossing the no-man's land, realized her ploy and fired at her, wounding her. But the Bulgarian squad successfully crossed over and surrendered. Not a Hollywood-grade action story, but still a brave feat nevertheless (she could not be sure in advance whether the Bulgarian offer of surrender was genuine or a ploy...).

Hello VTH! Can you react to the "West Betrayed Czechoslovakia to Hitler (The Munich Agreement,1938)" by Simple history? I think it is very interesting topic and do you think Czechoslovaks could have defended themselves if they did not give up on Sudetenland?

Thank you for "ighting" this forgoten part of Serbian history and our heroine Milunka Savic, Our nation prove in every World War and allways be on the right side with 5-6 milions losess in fist and second WW. But thats is all forgothen during Bombing of Serbia durnig 1999. This is also sad part of history and how an ally tru all wars become your arch enemy because enormus propaganda against my little country who did a lot sacrifice for Europe and whole world in this "dark hours" of history. Its newer happend that 26. countries leading by US and Nato atack only one largly smaller in comparison for brute taking part of her land 15 precent of her land undermining the law of the United Nations and the Partnership for peace.,but today they are worried about the same happ to Ukraine.. There is no end to the hypocrisy.
