In Lady Susan's case she is 83, and no doubt has an ageing mind and in her position probably hasn't had the experiences others would have. To some, an apology is water off a duck's back...simply words. To an elderly lady in her twilight years, who lives a comfortable life and likely doesn't go anywhere near social media, she probably sees no harm in an apology. A few kind words to ease any ill feeling then move on and enjoy the rest of her life. The problem with that is the precedent it sets, the power it gives to the accuser, and the seal of approval it gives to bullies that says it's ok to accuse anyone of anything.
