In my opinion, the 3 movies show what is revenge about: Sympathy for Mr Vengence showns revenge could be messy, sloppy and in the end, you still can get hurt. Oldboy shows how cruel and mad can someone be just to take revenge upon other. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance shows what revenge really is: something temporary that consumes your life because when it finishes, you don't feel better, just empty and remorse. (Just like I Saw the Devil) Imo....my favourite of the 3 is Lady Vengence (it's even my favourite movie of all time).

+bananaempijana Although you're right about the movies showing what's revenge is about, I don't agree with your interpretations of it. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance in my mind is more about the pointless infinite cycle that revenge causes and the eventual innocent people it'll happen to. OldBoy I think for a large part is about the idea of taking revenge and finding out the why isn't going to set you free, pointed out Oh Dae Su in his efforts to take revenge and to find out why this was done to him only brings himself to ruin. Meanwhile Lee Woo Jin after probably having spend his life on taking revenge he still hasn't processed his trauma afterwards. I do agree on Lady Vengeance. The revenge itself of that movie is pretty straight forward, but it doesn't bring these characters anything but misery. If you were to compare them I think the first one is quite the feel bad movie, there's nothing cool about it, it's generally very miserable, but I don't see that as a problem. OldBoy seems to exist in some sort of nightmarish reality, I do think it is the "coolest" of the three. Lady Vengeance is a lot like its main character, everything needs to be beautiful and I do think its stylization, although not pointless, makes it a bit impenetrable, but just more enjoyable for the right audience. I also feel like I'm one of few people who just didn't really like I Saw the Devil, I thought it did come off as rather empty and the movie seemed to show horror more for the sake of it rather than there being much to a point to it.

Although i can’t really disagree i still think people heavily underrate Sympathy for Mr Vengeance. The spiral of increasing Tragedy is so well done, from the suicide of a deathly sick person to save her brother from sacrificing himself, to the tragic drowning of a child where two humans are so close that you should think there is help, yet one is mentally unable to understand the situation (or probably he doesn’t even realize anything that goes on at this point) to the other just watching in the wrong direction and being deaf so unable to hear the shouts for help. Those two just tragic occurrences without really any bad intentions leading to the breakdown of the protagonists which starts this spiral of vengeance is just such a good way to justify the later actions in the movie.
