The graffity from 11:24 is a direct reference to the Sparda family: Red:Dante Blue:Vergil Purple:Sparda Guess what colour you get when you mesh red and blue? Also the part where Dante has to go up a little cascade to get to his old home, is a direct reference to the Divine comedy of Dante Alighieri, when Dante and Vergil have to go up a river cascading to get out of hell iirc.

The Heaven symbolism in the final missions is intriguing. We know Dante and Vergil quite _literally_ go to hell after that fight, so this idea adds an interesting layer to them leaving Nero topside to take care of things. Nero's the angel among them, so he gets to stay up above, while they either don't deserve to, or don't _think_ they deserve to, or are simply choosing to go because someone has to. They do still essentially get their happy ending, though. Visions of V tells us pretty clearly that Dante and Vergil REALLY like fighting each other. Now they can go back to doing it for fun instead of to kill each other. And keep the worst of the demonic threats away from the humans in the meantime.

The level of detail in this game is insane. The nature of the dmc games makes it unable to explain the story properly. So they use the environment and speech during battles to explain it for those who really pay attention. Really smart. Also, when Urizen says "How are you so powerful? You never lost anything." he sounds so hurt, unlike his usual speech. Even though Urizen is not completely Vergil, fragments of him are reflected on him, even the pain. V took all of Vergil's suffering with him, but it Urizen still feels. (This is better explained in the manga when Urizen took the form of little Vergil.) Everyday I learn something new from dmc and I'm living for it.

Fun fact, most of if not all of Redgrave in DMC5 is based off London - as an englishman myself I noticed that straight away Mission 1 is London Tower Bridge The start of mission 2 (street with the big billboard screens) I'm 99% sure is Piccadilly circus, though if it is it's HEAVILY downsized - Piccadilly IRL is like the size of Times Square in NYC The hotel from mission 2 is somewhere in London though I didn't recognise it so I don't think it's anywhere I've been I don't recognise Goliath's arena so it's possible that was taken from a different European city like Paris or Berlin, it gives me France vibes personally Mission 4 was one of the more recognisable places for me, being Borough Market - somewhere I visited not too long ago. I found it funny how they changed the sign to "Burrow Market" since the pronunciation largely is the same Not sure which missions since I haven't been to either of these places but apparently the National History Museum and Royal Albert Hall are both in DMC5 Last location, wasn't in this video but it's my favourite is mission 7 because it's the fucking Angel Station's long ass escalators, I've been on those things probably everytime I've gone to London so seeing that in DMC5 made me immediately realise for sure that Redgrave is in fact just London One final note all of the phones are London's iconic red phone boxes and the buses are clearly the red ones London is known for, which I imagined a lot of non-british DMC5 players would've picked up on but also the ambulances are in the British colours too, being that weird ass green and yellow checkered design - the funny thing with all of these is I didn't even question them, I rarely see places and things I know in video games so it took a minute for me to register like "hold on, Nero just got one of OUR ambulances thrown at him!"
@LadyAsmodeus
@LadyAsmodeus Жыл бұрын
yeah its clearly London inspired, to the point I think when I first played the game I just assumed its London or something, like literally London Metro and stuff :"D while Fortuna is more like Italy vibes - but the game doesn't really give us any world map showing which countries these cities are located, not really mentioning countries or anything~ as far as I know - but its fun to see how much the locations resemble to real life counterparts~

That entire area is a reference to the main hall in Mallet Castle. The positioning of the statue, the stairs behind the statue mirrors, and other details mirror the layout of the main hall. It's not 1:1, though, but those details and the name of the hotel 'Il Chiaro Mundo' make it clear that the area is a general DMC1 reference.

The clear skies in M20 also can be a reflection of Nero's goal in the father and son duel. Quoting him, "After all of this, I'll make you submit, father." He _will_ beat the crap out of his own father, because he knows they pretty much are cut from the same cloth. But he isn't going to kill him - he's going to make his father acknowledge him and his strength. There is no *doubt* or *hesitation* in his mind (which, in the imagery of a sky, would be represented by clouds - the darker they are the worse the scenario) and he knows exactly what to do - to beat up his father to make him realize and to help avert the crisis (the bright sun beating down on them - his "Resolve")

One question tho, the amount of people Vergil killed throughout the entirety of five is absurd. As you walk through the city you'll see human ashes and if bump into them you'll notice they fall apart with the root shown to be inbeded into them. They could have used that as a plot point or something, then again the Dante isn't peak morality ig, cause the amount of blood show is insane
@LadyAsmodeus
@LadyAsmodeus Жыл бұрын
yeah I love the husks of people sucked dry out of blood, and the way they crumble - however their sacrifice is being pushed into the background, and the main characters doesn't seem to be angry over it - maybe V, when he is shocked by the size of the Qlipoth and asks "how much blood has been sacrificed?" in a pretty remorseful voice - and altho Dante and Nero wants to stop Urizen to save the people, they seem to be more motivated by personal reasons - as well as V, he needs to return to his body, or he dies without it

@@LadyAsmodeus I'd also like to think that Dante, having been a Devil Hunter for well over 20 years (he's in his early 40's in this game if I recall correctly), doesn't get caught up in the civilian cost of big conflicts like this. At this point, he recognizes that it's just going to happen, and while it is sad, he can't change the past, but can stop the Big Evil to prevent the cost from getting bigger, thus making the future less bleak.

If the whole thing about reaching the heavens is intentional, than it mirrors Dante's Inferno somewhat as well. Since in that, Vergil leads Dante through the nine circles, then purgatory, then they climb a mountain to reach Heaven. The sky during the final battle against Vergil, as you pointed out, is a lighter blue when fighting as Dante, but then gets a little darker and bluer when you're fighting as Nero. I suppose you could see this as matching the energy colours of the respective characters: Vergil's is closer to a cyan light blue, and Nero's is more like a deep royal blue. Maybe it's meant to match who has the upper hand.
@LadyAsmodeus
@LadyAsmodeus Жыл бұрын
hm, interesting I dont I think I noticed the sky actually changing somewhat if you fight as nero :"D and yeah, there is a parallel can be drawn with divine comedy~ altho I speculate the real divine comedy story could start with a sequel, since both dante and vergil are in the underworld at the moment

For me my unrealistic hope is, now that we’ve seen what I would consider Nero’s complete character arc, I’d love to see DMC6 have only Dante and Vergil playable, seriously up the ante on Vergils mechanics, dante doesn’t need much bc he’s already as complex is 6th dimensional shapes. I love Nero but Vergil hasn’t yet gotten his spotlight, and with how fucking incredible Dan southworth is it would be criminal to not give him the spotlight. 11:29 Or it might be a reference to Sparda copulating with Eva resulting in the birth of Dante and Vergil (Dante especially, symbolically speaking). Sparda was a demon with near god-like power; Eva was an ordinary human woman gotten pregnant by said demon with god-like power, which would make her a madonna-like figure (similar to God begetting Mary with Jesus). It could be easy to see both Dante and Vergil as Christ-like figures from the Fortuna folk's perspective, but Dante fits the role a lot better (seriously, have you seen his awakened appearance in DMC5) than Vergil to the point where the latter could almost be an Anti-Christ. Although interestingly enough, Vergil would later find a madonna figure of his own in the woman in red, commonly theorized to be Nero's mother. Nero could also be interpreted as a Christ-like figure, although a lot less so than Dante, but not enough to fall on the other side of the spectrum (Vergil). If we continue the pattern of Sparda and Vergil having their own madonnas, Nero would find one in Kyrie. It's a commonly accepted theory among the fandom that the reason why Kyrie never made a physical appearance at all was because she was pregnant with Nero's biological child (after they adopted the three orphans). How early or late she is isn't actually established, although I'm thinking quite late (as in, the final hours of her pregnancy, which is during the events of 5) and gave birth several hours after 5's main storyline. (But that's a theory overall regardless; if you don't agree with it, it's fine, just don't be a douche about it, please. Fingers crossed for a daughter! 🤞) But that's just how I see it from the graffiti. I wonder what your theories might be, though.
@LadyAsmodeus

yeah it could also be hinting at that with the madonna-like figure, and could be interpreted in a christian-like way, didnt really thought about that~

wow! a 20 min dmc5 detail video from you? now this is a treat 8:59 you are half right, half wrong. vergil doesn't just want to protect himself. the reason he wants power is because he doesn't want to experience his childhood trauma again. the whole reason he came to the realisation of needing power was because he thought he was weak to not be able to protect anyone let alone himself. he also wants to protect people close to him 18:51 ohhh that's why the sky and everything else cracks and they're back inside that place when vergil returns
@LadyAsmodeus
@LadyAsmodeus Жыл бұрын
aaaaaaaw - yeah I always interpreted vergil saying "without strength you cannot protect anything" that he refers to protecting others, but the things happened with V changed my perspective, for example the way V / Vergil doesnt even care to protect an innocent child at first and doesnt care to protect random people - and then he realized he doesn't want to protect others, he wants to be protected - but at the end of the day, I'm sure he would definitely want to protect his family as well if given the chance~ V also tried to chase after the angelo and rescue Trish, but Dante gave that chance away from him, which is super sad :"D

@@LadyAsmodeus that's true but vergil didn't see much in humans so he thinks of them as worthless and that's probably why he didn't save that human. in his opinion, before the end of dmc5, power = everything. if you don't have power, you're worthless according to vergil.

This was a really good video, great work my guy!!!! Also, yanno it's not Super similar so this is by and large just shooting the shit, but i can't help but wonder if the Redgrave spiral insignia was meant to be a callback to the Umbrella logo, since Devil May Cry started out as an attempt at Resident Evil 4? And ngl the "Minotaurus" on the van has led me to my favorite pet theory/headcanon that u will pry from my cold dead hands (aka my headcanon that the van itself is actually a devil arm and that's why it can survive basically anything and get places it by all rights should Not be able to (i mean, Caveliere exists after all, not toooooo out there to think there was a minotaur demon in this universe who transformed into/fused with a fucking van HGFFVB)) There's also something to be said about the As above/So below symbolism of the final missions, by Human perspective the tree is reaching up to the heavens, scraping at the pearly gates, but by Demon perspective, it's plunging into the depths (We're fighting *roots* after all, and Trish has a line about that too though i can't remember her exact phrasing) I don't quite have the words for like, the symbolism there but i feel like it Is present; something about the dichotomy of perspectives reflecting the dichotomy of the twins perspectives perhaps, or maybe even something like hell is what you make of it?
@LadyAsmodeus
@LadyAsmodeus 11 ай бұрын
aw, thank you! :3 I really like both ideas, I think I heard others speculating the van is possessed and its a fun idea, but in the end of the day its probably just a joke :D unless... and yeah the Qlipoth is upside down, so they fighting on the bottom of the roots ~ bit hard to wrap your head around it, but the main reason why the tree is upside down is so it can feed on human blood from its roots, but there are also undenyable symbolism with it when it comes to dualism and reflections, especially the underworld being the opposite of the human world, but in a "one cannot exist without the other" situation, like darkness and light
