I'm a TESOL professor in NY. Their English level is quite respectable. Although they attended University I don't know their academic English level. but they have sentence structure, intonation, varied verse tenses, including subjunctive. They carry on conversations very well and they probably speak a smattering of other languages as well. I think they probably enjoy the opportunity to use their English in this endeavor.

@@gypsygirl5376 Respectable but having a completely fluent translator on hand could only be helpful. There is a lot of actual linguistic and subtle complexity involved in the treatment of transgender people in society, their inner self concept of their own gender, etc. English words used in Thailand often do not have the subtext they do in the west. Quite a lot is sadly lost. I know this primarily because my wife is a Thai trans woman and I’ve known a number of Thai trans women personally. A vast amount is left unsaid here.

Thai ladyboys become trans because trans prostitutes make more money than in regular jobs. They do this to elevate their standards of living. They came from an impoverished region called ISAAN, so the parents don't care what they do (ladyboy prostitutes) as long as they send money back home. In Thailand, they are not known as WOMEN; they are known as the third gender KATOEY, men with. a soul of a woman. They will not have sex reassignment surgery because they like being different, and the foreign sex tourists seem to like the novelty.

@@exnihilo415 Funny you say that given that the search results for "ladyboy interview" literally brings up two of Mark's videos as the first options. Others might have done interviews as well, but Mark seems to have a the talent needed to get a higher average view count for each of his videos, and it shows based on the view counts of the other results. The only other videos whose views that exceed his do so with shallow clickbait thumbnails and titles.

@@OverTheVoids Now we're moving the goalposts from "unprecedented" to "popular". Mark has a much bigger channel than any of the others, so of course his videos are going to be at the top of the current page rank. That said, if you sort by view count rather than default sort Interviews from Exploring Bangkok, jaystreazy, and zebnation all have interview videos with higher view counts. That said, I wasn't trying to compare viewcount only upload date and there are many ladyboy interview videos with low view counts which are also excellent. This is niche content, after all. I'm not attacking Mark. He's doing the lord's work here casting a fair and balanced light upon the world of Thai ladyboys BUT it is not UNPRECEDENTED work as you've already admitted yourself so I think our interaction here is over.

I think a lot of why the ladyboys seem grounded and generally content is the fact that they have strong social bonds with each other. Many of them come from similar backgrounds so they understand each other not just as they are today, but who they were as children. Having good friends who lnow you derply is very healing. I'm sure there's a lot of competition too, but they do seem to have good friendships as well.

The police are getting huge kickbacks and they very much like the way things are run. If some girl is assaulted by a John, that girl is going to escape and go to the police and the police are very responsive. The hotel already has a picture of your passport upon check in. You're not going to be able to get out of the country before this matter is resolved. Rest assured, Thai jail is some place you don't want to be. You can complain if you want. I watch to stay informed and educated on the crisis at hand, I’m fascinated with human behavior due to trauma I experienced as a boy. To watch others put on a smile and say they are content when I know they are not is disturbing to say the least, to have others like you cheer them on and say “they’re not hurting anyone else” is even more disturbing. @@pinklungs420 Yeah, it's absolutely accepted in Thai in my experience. My husband was from a rural area and the local trans person was just one of the group that had grown up together. We used to catch up for drinks with them all when we visited. There was no judgement of them. I loved that aspect of Thailand cuz I have had a lot of trans friends in my western country and they've experienced stigma and bullying. So sad.
