I tried many of these and found the most comfortable and convenient is a well-made bedpan. Can actually place it on any surface or seat and sit normally on it. I line it with a plastic bag and place a puppy pad or bed pan absorbent liner in that with a little cat litter. The edges of the bag come up and over the actual bedpan seat which makes it perfect for closing up if you are not going to dispose of it right away. If you use deeper kitty litter you can scoop clean it out in between changes. Some bedpans come with a small lid that you can place over the opening as well.

Two tips for bucket toilets. Put it in a milk crate to avoid tipping disaster. A urine hat like the ones placed on a toilet in the hospital to measure pee output to make an inexpensive urine diverter. It has a built in spout and I use a fabric softener bottle to collect for later disposal. I’ll check out the horse pellets. I have a Promaster so don’t have such a space issue. Good info and no nonsense presentation. I’ll suscribe.

I watched this video months ago and decided to try it. I just decided to popped back over to comment on the fact that we’ve been using this method for many months now and it is the best way to use a toilet in a van or camper. My husband was skeptical so we tested it in our house bathroom for a week and knew we would always use this method. I've just found your channel and it's GREAT. I'm a new subscriber. I own a Citroen Berlingo Micro Camper. Self-built naturally! I designed it to work in any weather, barring deep snow. Scotland is notorious for our poor weather. It sleeps my wife and I perfectly and we can even sit at a table and have a meal or play backgammon/dominoes while the wind batters us outside. We have a FIAMMA Bi-Pot 30 built into our seat closest to the rear door (it's only 30cm high). We have a 15L 12v fridge/freezer, single burner gas stove, tap + basin with running water, 110AH battery, TV and Internet and cupboards (one of which is designated as a cocktail bar). We can also enter/exit through both the side and back doors as the seats are in an L shape. It's a mighty package in a tiny space, but we love it. I should mention, when we have our blackout screens on the windows we can park anywhere. It's our cloak of invisibility. Yay, for micro campers...

@Bill Sbac good question. It really is not a struggle for me. It might be for others, but I find it very convenient and the best solution for my needs. I also don’t have the kind of space necessary for that. Even if I had a bigger van, I am not sure I would want to use space for a big toilet and lug around a bigger tank that I’d have to empty. This is easy, compact, light. Just an option that I find works. Everyone has to do what feels like the best option for them of course. Thanks for the great question. Hope this clarifies😊

Great topic! Great video! We were traveling recently in our minivan, which, of course, has a bucket system that is always ready. We stopped for lunch at a fast food restaurant that only had the drive through open, no rest rooms available. When we finished we wanted to use a toilet before getting back on the interstate as we were in a very busy location. We simply pulled the van curtains and used our own facilities. Emptied later when we found an appropriate dump station. Sooo, you don't have to be a nomad to have an emergency plan. Such peace of mind to always prepared.

I am 6'1 so a 5 gallon does not give me enough ceiling clearance in some campers or vans.

When I was growing up in Alaska we had no plumbing. #2 was taken care of in a good old fashioned outhouse. #1 was done where ever during the day, but at night we didn't want to go outside when it was cold. The 'chamber" was a metal coffee can with a metal lid. The guys did what guys do and us girls squatted over the can. It was dumped every morning. It actually worked really well. I think that we tend to overthink things sometimes, but I can see where #2 could be an issue if you don't have an outhouse or privacy and you can't get outside. (Going inside of a vehicle in a stealth situation, for instance.) Or if there are little kids involved. I really love the horse bedding idea. Absolutely getting that.

I agree. We do tend to overthink things. I just figure the simpler the set up. The easier for me to fix if something goes wrong😝

The horse pellets were such a great find when I rescued a litter of kittens. Now if I ever need to use litter I use the same pellets. Such a money saver! They sell the same stuff for cats in much smaller bags at much higher price points. What a brilliant way to repurpose them for our use.

@@PINSandNEEDLESGARMEN Mine, I think, is an '07, gosh I can't even remember! Mine has over 275K miles, omg, so many cross country road trips. I am trying to figure out how to leave the option open for sleeping, but also taking 2-3 teens skiing, and still be able to slide skis and snowboards inside, without having to put the Thule roof rack on. Is it hard to take the third row seat out? What would you put in it's place, the kitchen? Just curious!
@brendag28913 жыл бұрын
@@PINSandNEEDLESGARMEN Sorry, didn't see the 2nd reply. So the middle seat it has been removed? That's a great idea! That way there would be room to have lunch in the vehicle with passengers, and also put on ski or snowboard boots, so if Covid makes a comeback and chalets and other warming houses & snack bars are closed in winter, or if it's just raining and you're boondocking, there is space to change your gear. The Pilot does so well in the snow.

One of the best videos discussing the WC question!. I've been thinking of buying a folding camp stool for my Prius. Do you think the Horse Pellets are the same as Wood Stove Pellets that are sold for burning? I once box trained a puppy to use a box filled with Wood Stove Pellets. But, I switched to clumping cat litter because the pellets turned to sawdust and couldn't be scooped. I didn't tell the dog that she was using "cat" litter. She wouldn't have liked that, at all.
@LadyBugout3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I have heard that they are NOT the same thing. But I have not tried the wood pellets myself.

I used to be a truck driver and after succumbing to a truck stop buffet, I had make an emergency stop at a rest area. Let me tell you as good as you may be at pinching and holding back, it doesn't work to good when you are getting out of a semi tractor. What a mess. My solution was to get a plastic detergent container that had good fit on the lid. Standard wastebasket liners worked great.

A Bivvy loo, which I bought on Amazon UK, is my toilet of choice . They collapse down for storage and come with a sturdy canvas storage bag. Then its biodegradable bags and pet bedding sawdust.
