In this video, I offer my 10 best tips for staying cool in my Tiny Ford Connect! Vans are notoriously difficult to temperature control whatever the outdoor weather may be. This summer has been particularly HOT, so I've had to figure out creative ways to keep cool with temperatures at record highs. I hope these tips help. If you have any good suggestions, please feel free to leave them in the comments below. As always, thanks for watching! Have a great Saturday!!!

I've used a long silver tarp about 24' long, priced $20 - $25 . You throw it over the roof of the van coming out to the side door area and stake it in the ground as far our at it reaches, just like a tent. When done properly, it will look like you're parked under a canopy except the van roof holds it up without needing any poles! The silver color reflects the heat off the van and with no posts to use like you would with a canopy or tent, all you need is to have some ropes tied to the 4 corners of the tarp. Those are then staked out past the side door leaving room for you to go in and out. It takes all of 5 min. to set up, so it's not the work involved with a tent. (Hope I explained that well enough... LOL) If anyone wants to take it a step further, they can have 3 poles shaped like an upside down U & put them under the tarp extended out past the side door you are using to enter & exit the van. That gives you a nice canopy, and still doesn't require hardly any storage (just 3 pcs. of tent pipe or inexpensive PVC pipes.) And it all takes 5 min. or so for someone setting it up all alone.

Wetting things down is something we do here in key west when we have a hurricane and the power is out…. We do that to a sheet and use it over us for sleeping, helps to keep the mosquitoes away too, if the doors and windows are open and you’ve lost a screen! I hate hurricane season….

Covering your windows from the outside (while parked, of course) will keep the interior much cooler than interior window coverings. Once the long and wavey UV rays pass through glass, they shorten (Infrared) and are unable to escape back through. Hence, the heat is trapped in your van. Those reflexive blankets and magnets would solve the problem just as you did on the roof. And you gotta love awnings. They do the trick, as well. Thanks for those great suggestions. Peace, love, and happy trails!

@@LadyBugout right on. My daughter and I use this idea only when we plan on being sessile and outside of van most of the day (e.g. camping, at the beach in MS, or one of our lovely LA river spots). Keeps the van nice and cool for when you need to duck in for whatever, and only takes a few seconds to remove, I love your pocket laden shower curtain and "barn door" space 👍

Great tips, Dee. I have one idea, similar to your bamboo scarf. I have some little neckerchiefs that I found at REI. They have a channel with little beads that you soak in water before using - for a couple hours if possible. They expand with the water, and stay cool for a few hours. They will shrink up and dry out over time but you can soak them and reuse.

This Lady Has Excellent Ideals. One Thing Is To Face The Sun And Remember That Glass Hold Heat So Depending On Where You Are Parked, You Can Put The Cover You Use Inside On Your Windshield Or Side Windows On The Outside. They Will Block Most Of The Heat. You'll Be Surprised.

This is Transit Connect-specific, but last month I was able to track down a pair of taxi windows for my sliding doors, and I had them installed. Combined with my Maxx Air Fan, I have so much more ventilation now. Made bug screens for them too. The ventilation aspect does wonders, especially when sleeping at night. Other than that, yes, chase the weather. You can't fight humidity.

@JimmySlaughter
@JimmySlaughter 3 жыл бұрын
@@LadyBugout Yep, there's a guy in Florida who's been salvaging the taxi glass from junk yards for a few years. They're getting harder to find now because most of the Transit Connect taxis in the Mark I body style are not only no longer on the road, but many of them have gone to the crusher. Unfortunately, no one makes aftermarket glass for the Transit Connect that has slider windows, so finding the taxi windows are the only option if your sliding doors already have Ford windows in them.

I have the same van but mine has windows in all the doors. I built hard covers for them, painted them white and added some styrofoam insulation to the insides. I use an exterior front windshield cover like for winter time to block the windshield from getting hot. I have a solar panel on the roof that helps block a smidge of sun from the top. I have plans to add some removable side awnings that attach to the solar panel frame I built. I have some severe anxiety about cutting a hole in my roof plus the max air type fans add a lot to the height and I need it short as possible for parking garages at work. Instead keeping with your airflow ideas I keep my front windows cracked as well and have the rain guards. And I drilled a hole in my back door up high and put in a small exhaust fan to keep the air moving. Works pretty good and I painted it to match so it's not as odd as you might think. Thank you for sharing your ideas and what you have found that works. I have watched alot of videos to see what people have done and their return videos as to what actually works. Thanks again for sharing!

Tip # 5. Get a small, low watt air conditioner or minisplit which can easily be run by solar. Many vanlifers are finally figuring they van have the comfort of air conditioning. I lived off grid and used one for years. Due to my health I am unable to be in extreme heats. It is possible to have a small air conditioner and easily run it on solar. Great video. Thank you.

Here's one that I just learned about 2 weeks ago. It's not about cooling down your van, but rather yourself. And you're probably going to think, "That's crazy! How's that supposed to work?!", (I know I did), and I still don't know WHY it works, BUT IT DOES, and almost immediately! What you do is take either peppermint or spearmint essential oil and put it inside the crook of your elbow. A roller ball applicator is the easiest way, but not required. Just put some on a cotton ball and cover right where your arm creases at the elbow on the inside. You can even dab some on the insides of your wrists and a little behind each ear, just like you would perfume, and in a matter of seconds I went from melting in the heat to actually being comfortable. And that's something you can do anywhere, and time to help you cool off. Like I said, I haven't the foggiest idea WHY that works, and had planned to look it up, but decided that all I really care about is the fact that IT WORKS! Isn't that the craziest way you've ever heard of to cool off? Try it, you'll be amazed! AND COOL! LOL

@@LadyBugout 12 bucks at Walmart. I bought one. Extremely effective. So I bought 2. Watch Bob's video. You'll be sold. I have a small car. I use the ceramic magnets. And when there isn't shade. They were amazing. That's my testimony. With 2 , you can move them around with the sun.

The tips and ideas you presented can be used anywhere. I have some of those cooling towels. Some of them you shake and other you grab at the ends and you tug giving them a sharp snap to activate something they put in them. I noticed you were wearing loose clothing and also barefoot, so obvious as it might be to some people, uncovering your hands, feet and head and wearing loose or baggy clothing allows you to release heat. And quickly washing/rinsing your hands and arms, neck, face, your whole head and your feet helps even if you have to put on a clean dry pair of socks or a hat. Feeling clean seems to help as you cleanse your pores and water or even a wet towel cools your skin. In earlier times and in other parts of the world, people would wear light cotton clothing (Full length pants and long sleeved shirts) and hats to work outside and even wet their clothes. But nobody wants to go to the mall in wet clothes, LOL.

One weather app that I use for aviation and day to day is MyRADAR. It’s great for tracking thunderstorms and severe weather. I’ve changed plans on where not to go based on what I saw on it. For future van builders, I highly recommend investing in good insulation, especially in the roof. There’s a tremendous amount of radiant heat that’s transmitted through the metal roof, especially if it’s other than a white van. Great video as always, thanks!

So great. Like the thermal blanket idea. May I ask...how is your awning attached? I have a Transit cargo, no roof rack.
@LadyBugout
@LadyBugout 3 жыл бұрын
There are manufacturer holes in the top. I didn’t know they were there either. But if you take a peek, you’ll see four covered holes on top. That is where you can attach a roof rack and then I attached the awning to that.

That’s all I’ve got🤗 With the worst heat I’ve been in…102 Fahrenheit…I will run my van and turn on the air and let the noggle cool it down in back. It’ll bring the temp down to 78-80 in 10-15 minutes and I turn off the van and keep a fan on and sleep great.
