I was having this conversation with someone today. Normal people can compartmentalise when they’re watching, playing, or reading fiction - they can choose to take what they’re viewing as pure fantasy that takes place in a different world from ours. We can enjoy things that are outside our usual world view because we just take it as make-believe. There’s something seriously wrong with people that can’t do this simple trick and just enjoy things for what they are.

@@fattiger6957 Pretty sure most of those mistranslations were at least done in good taste/faith back then. Some people also complain about newest Vanilla Ware game being flowered up in middle age English... Japanese is a very basic language though, without a lot of nuances and subtleties afaik... Imho it suits the game and it doesn't entirely change context or concepts of og. . It's funny though, that the made up English version of Samurai Pizza Cats was way more appreciated than the original... Kinda makes me want to compare. But in current year I'd never even watch something where all the dialogue was just made up with total disregard of original design, because we all know it will be shite.
@NaoyaYami5 ай бұрын
@@CommDante Japanese isn't as simple as you think. Which suffixes you use, which characters you decide to write the word down with, and so on do matter and it's very often not easy to translate. It's especially hard when trying to translate very japanese-culture centric works (like Persona or Yakuza series for example). Want an example? Find the difference between someone being addressed as John-sama vs Smith-san (assuming the person is named John Smith). Both are about being respectful and polite but in a different ways. Even today in 2024 we get official localizations that ignore that and go with whatever, literally misrepresenting characters' relationships (and that happens even to the biggest IPs). Of course it's another thing when original work is written in a way that avoids those hard-to-translate situations. And those bad translations of the past? They were intentionally bad because even less people than today spoke those languages and no one cared about being faithful to the original (unlike today, when being faithful is opposite to woke agenda). Also tbh, early Japanese games also did not care about being accurate to western cultures (just look at foreign players names in Japanese sports games on NES xD)

I want to say I personally believe tomb raider has colonialist implications, however I think erasing that and trying to pretend Lara is this anti-colonialist hero is just a dumb decision, if they want to address colonisation, then they should do it by keeping Lara an anti-hero. I think tomb raider 4 and 5 had the perfect stories for this. Lara was not the hero in any of these games, she is directly responsible for starting the apocalypse in 4 by stealing a precious artifact. She also dies at the end of the game - paying the consequences for her actions.

Lady, the later part of your video is spent articulating the complexities of colonization. You, yourself, admit is it complex and not a black and white issue. And yet you seem to be upset when a game writer ALSO wants to treat this as a complex issue. Lara Croft's previous storylines simplified the issue, but now they are trying to add nuance and complexity. That sounds like a far more compelling story treatment to me. And I would think you'd find it interesting as well if you weren't captured by this sad little "anti-wokeism" grift that is motivating you and so many others.

Sorry, just felt like I needed to translate the segment. It's important to remember that these people will rally against their fictionalised version of historical colonialism that they have made up in their heads, but have no problem enforcing their social "localising" and censoring aspects of other cultures that they decide are unfit to exist in the modern era. God of War hasn't created armies of neo Spartans or neo Vikings, killing across the world.😂

Good video! This is wild what they are doing with this franchise.

Crazily, all the TR mobile games are far closer to Classic Tomb Raider.

The only people who want to change Lara Croft into something bland and inoffensive are Feminist activists. Sadly most videogame companies are full of Feminist activists... we are doomed!
@blitzerblazinoah68385 ай бұрын
Funny thing is that most of these "feminists" are either butch, male or men pretending to be female. Not only that, many self-proclaimed male feminists are actually sexual predators (Weinstein and Wheden come to mind).

I'm not even that upset at the people who are making this TTRPG, i'm upset at Crystal Dynamics people who saw this idiotic, ideological drivel pitched to them and gave it a go ahead and their blessings. Despicable.

I love how you've ripped these ppl apart for being unable to separate reality and fiction. I really hate that they're taking this "anti-colonialism" route, and I'm a guy from the Philippines (like the lead designer, lol). I'm just glad we got the faithful remasters. I do hope XProger's team gets the green light for 4 and 5 as well. Still won't buy any more TR games from Crystal after Underworld.

Unpopular opinion; If real life colonial tomb raiders didn’t take artifacts to put in museums, most of the antiquities, we have today would’ve been destroyed. Look at all the Sumerian artifacts that were destroyed by Islamic extremists recently. Or the Head of Egyptian antiquities that was stealing and selling artifacts on the black market.

It all started not in "Shadow", but in the 2013 remake. "Let's make her more grounded, more realistic, more flawed". "Shadow" at least had the atmosphere close to the original. I'm an anti-colonialist, but I'm very much agree. Leave our Lara ALONE!

Why not just make it so the story is the CULTURE that owns the relics have asked Lara to help them recover them. Bam. No colowhatever and you still get to raid tombs. Relics arent kept by her but recovered by her and given to the countries people. YAY! [There will be no sales of this board game. it will bomb.]

I like the original Tomb Raider time line games. (1996 - 2000, 2003) If (or when) some one calls me a sexist, racist or worse for liking the old TR games. Then so be it. That will be there problem and not mine.

These people whining about colonialism beed to travel - and not to Spain. Rather, they should visit many places overseas which could benefit greatly from western colonialism.

Lara was always a sociopath. Just look at how she kills Pierre in Revelations, she's joking and laughing about it The "humanizing" of her from Underworld on has been a curse

Isn't..... isn't Latin America part of the Western Hemisphere? How.... how can it be Ground Zero for "Western Imperialism" if it's IN the West? If they had said "Spanish Imperialism" that would make sense, but saying a Western Nation is Ground Zero for Western Imperialism is like saying Scandinavia is ground zero for Viking Brutality. It's buzz words for the sake of buzzwords.

It breaks my heart!!! I can’t and won’t stand this new mess anymore. Someone needs to stop this!!! Nobody wants a TR game like this crap! I hate what they‘ve done to TR/Lara Croft . For me, the Last 3 main games doesn’t exists. I hope the next game flops hard and some dev who knows what TR really is about takes care of the franchise!

Gaming and other devs have taken note and rumour has it now that Call Of Duty will be renamed Sent You A Friends Request and you run around with rainbow flags making up genders and becoming friends. Battlefield will be renamed Playground, where the idea of the game is too be as sickly nice too one another as possible and boosting moral. And GTA6 will be renamed ''Just Borrowing Your Car'' and you have too drive around stopping crime and buying old ladies their weekly groceries My God.... can someone please tell me what is happening to this planet? We are being ruled by morons that care more about things that the average person couldn't care less about and ignoring real issues like uhhh, homelessness, lack of housing, NHS on it's knees, Police Force non existent..... But noooo, the fact a game is titled Tomb Raider is bad. This is why Aliens don't visit!..... they are scared of us!

The thing is, is that aside from TR 2, 4, and Underworld, Lara doesn't steal other real cultures stuff. TR1 is all about Atlantis, and yes she goes to places like Greece, the artifact is Atlantean. TR2 is about a Chinese dagger which turns you into a dragon, hardly real. TR3 deals with a serious of magical meteorite fragments which can kickstart evolution. 4 is probably the closest you can get to what the developers are describing as she takes the Amulet of Horus and unleashes Set on the world, but again this is obviously fictitious. 5 has her taking numerous things like the philosopher's Stone, but again I'm pretty sure that is not real. AoD has her dealing with nephilim and the artifacts she retrieves are magical alchemical items. Legend she forges Excalibur, which is English so doesn't count, as she is also English. Underworld has her retrieve Mjolnir, but like they did with Excalibur it's not specifically Norse, as the legends of the land came after the original as bits are found in Thailand and Mexico. So I really don't understand this colonial nonsense. I mean, she fights literal gods like Natla and stops the world being destroyed several times, what about it relevant to real life colonisation?
